I’m really excited about the Lanterns series from DC Studios, but honestly, we haven’t seen much yet, even though it’s still planned for 2026. So far, only a few high-quality images have leaked online, and we’re still waiting for the first official trailer – it feels like it’s taking a while!
The best look audiences have gotten at the new space crime drama so far was in HBO Max’s short “Coming in 2026” preview. This two-minute promo showcased upcoming shows on HBO, including the first public clips from Lanterns. While it wasn’t the extensive preview some fans wanted, the brief footage offered exciting new details about the upcoming DC series.
The “Lanterns” segment of the “Coming in 2026” video starts with the show’s main Green Lantern characters, John Stewart (played by Aaron Pierre) and Hal Jordan (played by Kyle Chandler), walking into what looks like a town meeting. There’s been a lot of discussion about the show beginning with a series of disturbing murders in the American Midwest, and it’s likely this town hall meeting is connected to those events.

Viewers are getting another glimpse of the early stages of John and Hal’s investigation, this time focusing on the Earthbound part of the case. One new shot shows Pierre’s Green Lantern standing in what appears to be the main location where the crime happened – a field.

The scene then shows the two main characters stepping through a strip of plastic sheeting, as if entering the room where a murder from the show took place.

The opening scene of Lanterns is almost entirely defined by one image: a car traveling on a dirt road.

Rumors suggest the upcoming 2026 Green Lantern series will center around veteran Lantern Hal Jordan guiding John Stewart, and this car scene seems to depict a key part of that mentorship – a trial of some kind.

Viewers get a clear view of a Green Lantern ring – seemingly belonging to Hal – as Hal delivers a lengthy explanation to John: “You won’t be prepared… until the ring itself chooses you.”

It is at this moment that Hal leaps from the car, leaving John alone in the out-of-control vehicle.

John searches around inside the car as the camera shows Hal driving away smoothly in the 1990s sedan.

Before John can regain control of the vehicle, it careens off a cliff.

Viewers are treated to one last look at the car as it speeds off a remote highway and soars into the air.

Although we don’t see John using his Lantern abilities, this dangerous situation likely exists to activate the Green Lantern ring and awaken Pierre’s character’s hidden powers by forcing him into a stressful, life-or-death scenario.

The series last left viewers with a shocking image: John Pierre, covered in blood, walking along a highway. He’s still wearing the same clothes he had in the car, suggesting this happened either right after Hal tried to drive him off a cliff, or during and shortly after a major fight with one of the show’s main enemies.

The upcoming series Lanterns is one of several projects planned by DC Studios for 2026. This live-action show, coming to HBO Max, will center on two Green Lanterns investigating a string of crimes in the American heartland. What begins as a series of unusual murders soon escalates into a much larger, galactic mystery. Starring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, the series is being developed by a creative team including Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King. While a specific release date hasn’t been revealed, Lanterns is anticipated to premiere in late summer.
When Will the Lanterns Trailer Finally Arrive?
I just got a quick peek at Lanterns through that HBO Max promo teasing what’s coming in 2026, and honestly, it feels like just a little taste of something much bigger. I’m expecting a full trailer – and a lot more – to drop in the next few months, and I can’t wait!
It seemed like a full trailer for the new DC series was about to be released. Everything pointed to it by the end of 2025. A first look at the trailer for Lanterns was actually shown in November during a presentation in South America. So, the trailer is finished – now it’s just a question of when James Gunn and the team at DCU decide the right moment to share it with the public.
Originally, the plan was to release this series in early 2026, so a trailer before the end of 2025 seemed perfect. However, the release date has shifted. Now that the series, Lanterns, is scheduled for late summer, DC Studios has more time to decide when to release a trailer.
We’ll probably get our first good look at the show in the next couple of months, most likely during the Super Bowl on February 8th. Because the Super Bowl is the most-watched TV event of the year, it’s the perfect opportunity for studios to release trailers for their major upcoming projects.
It’s a smart move for DC Studios to release the first trailer for Lanterns during the Super Bowl. While it might be a bit early to fully launch the show’s marketing, the Super Bowl is the perfect place to generate excitement.
