2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games to feature 11 esports titles

Following the triumphant conclusion of the Asian Games held in Guangzhou, China during 2009, preparations for the subsequent edition have already commenced. This is exciting news for esports enthusiasts, as the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan has expanded the number of esports titles and included 11 games as medal events, according to the Olympic Council of Asia. Notably, at least three mobile games are set to be featured on this list.

In the year 2023, the previous Asian Games unfolded, showcasing eight distinct competitions. However, for this event, a unique selection committee aimed to introduce a vibrant atmosphere by incorporating games spanning various categories.

To boost participation and rivalry, we’re incorporating two highly-acclaimed Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) games – Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and Pokémon Unite – into our upcoming event. In this event, Arena of Valor will be replaced by Honor of Kings.

Despite already being a medal-winning event in many athletic competitions, expanding to feature more game titles presents a significant challenge. This demonstrates not only the potential but also the market appeal of games that can be played across various platforms.

Over time, video game titles have gained widespread popularity and are now included as medal events in various competitions. Besides their inclusion in the Asian Games and other regional tournaments, the first Olympic Esports Games are scheduled for 2026.
