2025’s Biggest Box Office Film Ne Zha 2 Is Heading to HBO Max

The year’s biggest blockbuster is coming to HBO Max, but another film is challenging its record. While Lilo and Stitch earned the most money from Hollywood, a Chinese animated sequel has become the highest-grossing film worldwide.

The popular animated film Ne Zha 2, which earned billions of dollars in 2025, will be available on HBO Max starting December 24th—just in time for Christmas! Fans can also watch the original Ne Zha from 2019, which comes to the platform on December 1st, meaning both movies will be available on HBO Max for the holidays.

Fans worldwide were thrilled when the sequel to Ne Zha premiered on January 29th. The movie takes viewers on a spectacular and action-packed adventure, following Ne Zha as he faces a series of challenging trials. Successfully completing these trials will not only grant him immortality but also allow him to revive his friend, Ao Bing.

As a huge animation fan, I was really excited for Ne Zha 2, and it definitely didn’t disappoint! Everyone seems to agree it’s fantastic – critics and audiences alike are loving it. Right now, Rotten Tomatoes gives it a ‘Certified Fresh’ score of 92% based on 88 reviews, which is amazing. But get this – regular moviegoers even love it more, giving it a ‘Verified Hot’ rating of 98% after over 1,000 reviews! It’s clearly a hit.

I was absolutely blown away by Ne Zha 2! It didn’t just do well in theaters – it absolutely crushed it! It earned over $2.215 billion, making it the biggest movie of the year. Even more incredible, it became the highest-grossing animated film ever, surpassing Inside Out 2 by almost $500 million! It was truly something to see.

James Cameron’s Next Sci-Fi Epic Could Unseat Ne Zha 2 from Its Box Office Throne

This year, the only movie likely to outperform Ne Zha 2 in ticket sales is Avatar: Fire and Ash, scheduled for release on December 19th. As the third installment in James Cameron’s Avatar series, the film returns viewers to the world of Pandora for a fresh, action-filled story. It will introduce a new group of Na’vi people, known as the Ash People, and their determined leader, Varang.

The movie features returning stars like Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, Zoe Saldaña as Neytiri, Stephen Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch, and Sigourney Weaver as Kiri. New to the cast is Oona Chaplin, playing Varang, who will join forces with Quaritch and his forces as she seeks revenge with her Mangkwan clan.

As a huge film fan, I’m really excited about the opening weekend numbers for the new Avatar movie, Fire and Ash. Early predictions are between $100 and $130 million, which is fantastic! Knowing that Avatar: The Way of Water made a massive $2.3 billion worldwide, I wouldn’t be shocked if this one breaks the record currently held by Ne Zha 2. It’s shaping up to be another huge success for the franchise!
