For over sixty years, fans of Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek have always found things to debate about the shows and movies. Lately, though, disagreements aren’t so much about the stories themselves, but about what officially counts as “canon” – the established history of the Star Trek universe. It’s worth remembering that the rules of canon weren’t even clearly set until well into the second wave of Star Trek productions. Roddenberry himself often prioritized the newest stories when conflicts arose, and those close to him revealed in The Fifty-Year Mission that he even removed entire seasons of The Animated Series and disliked episodes of the original Star Trek from official canon. Now, with the end of Strange New Worlds Season 3, the biggest complaint about the popular character Spock involves both the way his story is unfolding and its place within the established canon. Some fans dislike how the show is handling his relationships with La’an Noonien Singh, Christine Chapel, and T’Pring. However, there’s a good reason to believe this storyline is heading towards a tragic event, one that will ultimately drive Spock to distance himself emotionally from those he cares about.
