Unlike previous installments, this film will offer us a fresh take, delving into his first significant adventure without rehashing an origin story. This promises to unveil a completely new universe within the DCU’s initial theatrical release, making it a must-watch for fans and newcomers alike.

Among discussions among fans regarding the trailers so far, a significant topic revolves around the movie’s score, which draws inspiration from the iconic theme crafted by the renowned composer John Williams. As we approach the launch of Superman, curiosity heightens about what other musical elements will be introduced to the soundtrack.

James Gunn’s Superman Movie Score – Reason For Concerns?

As reported by Film Music Reporter, it’s confirmed that composer David Fleming will contribute to the score for James Gunn’s upcoming “Superman,” which is scheduled to premiere on July 11. Notably, Fleming has previously worked on additional music for popular films such as “Top Gun: Maverick,” the 2019 version of “The Lion King,” and both installments of the “Dune” series.

For the first time in a standalone Superman movie, the score will be jointly created by more than one composer. Fleming will collaborate with John Murphy, who has previously scored Gunn’s recent films, namely The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Speculation among fans suggests that Fleming might be brought in at the last minute to incorporate melodies that might strike a chord with preview audiences more strongly. However, there’s a worry that if Superman doesn’t have a unique musical voice from a single composer, the soundtrack could end up sounding fragmented.

In 2015, I found myself captivated by a unique musical experience in “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” Unlike its Avengers predecessors, this film wasn’t scored by the usual maestro, Alan Silvestri. Instead, Brian Tyler took on the composing duties, with additional music contributions from none other than Danny Elfman, famed for his work on Batman. This made “Avengers: Age of Ultron” a standout in the series due to its multiple composer approach, a departure that added an extra layer of intrigue to the movie itself.

2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder, a film scored by frequent Marvel Cinematic Universe composer Michael Giacchino (also the director of Werewolf by Night), and Nami Melamud, saw the resurgence of a particular trend. However, on various fronts, this Phase 4 sequel did not resonate with fans in ways that extended beyond its musical aspects.

As a seasoned movie critic, I’ve been keeping an eye on James Fleming’s impressive portfolio in the music department, and it’s clear that his work has resonated deeply with audiences. His scores have received high praises for their unique blend of sound, making me eager to see what he brings to the table in the upcoming collaboration with Murphy. However, there’s a slight apprehension about whether Fleming’s style might conflict thematically with Murphy’s vision.

On a positive note, Gunn’s comic book movies have consistently delivered when it comes to the musical aspect, and I’m hopeful that this collaboration will continue that trend of excellence.

As a movie reviewer, I find myself captivated by the prospect of no less than a dozen villains squaring off against the Last Son of Krypton, offering Murphy and Fleming a golden opportunity to infuse this tale with electrifying musical motifs. Although the potential for conflicting themes and styles remains a concern, a definitive judgment can only be made once the complete score is experienced within the context of the film itself on the big screen.
