2025 Genesis GV80 Coupe Review: Sporty Looks, Less Sporty Drive
As a seasoned auto enthusiast with over two decades behind the wheel and countless miles under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of automotive innovations – some that left me awestruck, while others left me scratching my head in bewilderment. The 2025 Genesis GV80 Coupe was one such vehicle that had me questioning my sanity for a moment or two.
Upon first sight, the Makalu Gray exterior and two-tone Sevilla Red Obsidian Black interior of the GV80 Coupe were as alluring as a siren’s song. However, once I settled into the driver’s seat, the sweet serenade turned into a symphony of discomfort. The side bolstering left my shoulder blades feeling like they were being pinched by a pair of overzealous vice grips.
The 3.5-liter V6 engine hummed to life in near silence, leaving me yearning for the roar I expected from such a powerful powerplant. The transmission shifts felt sluggish, as if the turbos and e-supercharger were struggling to keep up with my demands. In short, I wanted more.
Despite these initial setbacks, there was still a glimmer of hope in me – a hope that Genesis could turn this around and deliver a vehicle worthy of its luxury pedigree. If they can work out the kinks in the interior, retune the suspension for a smoother ride, and dial in the powertrain to deliver the performance I know they’re capable of, then the GV80 Coupe might just have a chance at redemption.
Until that day comes, though, I’ll be left wondering if Genesis is playing an elaborate joke on us all – or if they truly believe this is what we want in a luxury SUV coupe. Only time will tell, but until then, I’m off to find some aspirin for my sore shoulder blades and a good laugh at the absurdity of it all.
Joke: They say necessity is the mother of invention, but if that’s true, then discomfort must be the father!
Among the cars I was eagerly anticipating to drive this year, the 2025 Genesis GV80 Coupe stood out as one of the most intriguing. Since 2017, the luxury division of Hyundai and Kia has been consistently delivering successful cars and SUVs, which made me confident that Genesis had refined its formula. Yet, as I took control of the GV80 Coupe and drove away from the parking lot, I found myself questioning if I was indeed in the right car or if I was being pranked. I didn’t expect to be left feeling so underwhelmed by the new SUV coupe.
New Year, New GV80 Coupe
In 2025, Genesis gave the GV80 a facelift, but they also introduced a brand new model – the sporty GV80 Coupe, which is its counterpart in the standard SUV lineup. The new design features MLA-powered LED headlights, a revised two-line crest grille, larger air intakes, fresh chrome accents, and exhaust outlets that are also found on the GV80 Coupe. Distinctive to the coupe version are LED surface-emitting rear combination lamps, a wide auxiliary brake light integrated into the tailgate, and a descending spoiler located at the rear center. The standard wheels for the GV80 Coupe are 20-inch five-spoke sport alloys, with 22-inch two-line designed sport alloys available as an option.
In the interior of the GV80 Coupe, you’ll find a two-toned flat-bottom steering wheel, a shimmering shift knob resembling crystal, carbon fiber decorative accents, seats featuring unique patterns and stitching specifically for coupes, and pedals enhanced with metallic accents. The GV80 Coupe boasts an integrated cluster and navigation display using OLED technology, measuring 27 inches.
As a long-time car enthusiast with a penchant for luxury SUVs, I must say that the engine options for the GV80 Coupe have certainly piqued my interest. The standard 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 engine delivers a respectable 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a balance between power and efficiency. However, the more powerful engine with an electronically driven supercharger, producing 409 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque, is truly a game-changer.
Personally, I have always been drawn to vehicles that offer both speed and refinement, and the GV80 Coupe certainly fits the bill. Moreover, the fact that all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission come standard with either engine option is a huge plus. The EPA ratings for fuel economy are also impressive, especially considering the power these engines deliver.
Overall, I believe that the GV80 Coupe offers a unique blend of luxury, performance, and efficiency that will appeal to many car enthusiasts. Whether you’re looking for a daily driver or a weekend toy, this SUV has something to offer for everyone.
Driving The 2025 GV80 Coupe Was A Let-Down
Upon approaching and entering the 2025 GV80 Coupe model I tested, my initial feelings were favorable. The Makalu Gray exterior looked sleek, and the two-toned Sevilla Red Obsidian Black interior was visually appealing. However, as I settled into the driver’s seat, a wave of discomfort dampened my positive impression. I found myself puzzled as to why my shoulder blades were aching. Although criticisms about excessively soft lumbar support are common online and can be adjusted, this wasn’t the root cause of my discomfort. Instead, it seemed like the side bolstering was uncomfortably pinching my shoulder blades inward. As time passed, this issue became increasingly noticeable. Maybe I simply needed more time to adjust the seat settings for an ideal fit.
In a surprising quietness, the 3.5-liter V6 engine sprang into action, contrary to my expectations for a louder roar from a twin-turbo and supercharged powerplant. Genesis appears to have fine-tuned this engine to deliver power subtly rather than overtly. As I maneuvered the crystal shift knob into drive, off I went. The heft of the nearly 5,000-pound SUV coupe was palpable, and it took a deliberate touch on the accelerator to get it moving smoothly. The transmission shifts weren’t as crisp as anticipated, and there were occasional hiccups that seemed out of place for a vehicle in this class. It felt like a momentary delay for the turbos, electric supercharger, and transmission to coordinate their efforts for an acceleration burst. In essence, I craved a more exhilarating experience.
The ride comfort of the GV80 worked fine for daily use, but heavier bumps were a bit bothersome. In normal driving mode, the vehicle maintained a stable feel on the road, yet it struggled to manage corners without excessive lean. Fortunately, the supportive bolsters helped keep me securely in place while driving.
2025 GV80 Coupe Cost Vs. Benefit
The base model of the GV80 Coupe, designed primarily for luxury, is available at a starting price of $79,950. The highest-end version costs $85,750. Since the upgraded model offers minimal performance improvement, it might be wiser to opt for the standard one due to its lower cost. Prospective buyers can enjoy all the luxury and convenience features without expecting a track-ready performance from this SUV coupe.
Genesis Has Work To Do On The GV80 Coupe
I’m strongly hoping that the Genesis GV80 Coupe will prove successful. I admire the SUV fastback design; it offers a distinct look and, theoretically, should combine luxury and sport flawlessly. If Genesis can address the interior issues, fine-tune the suspension, and perfect the powertrain, I don’t see any reason why the GV80 wouldn’t compete confidently with models like Porsche’s Cayenne Coupe or BMW’s X6. Given my faith in second chances, when Genesis improves the GV80 Coupe, I’ll be more than willing to reconsider my opinion.
