2024's most polarizing A24 horror movie is now streaming on Max, in case you missed it

As a seasoned horror enthusiast with over three decades of immersing myself in the genre, I must confess that this year has been a rollercoaster ride for me. The plethora of top-notch horror movies gracing our screens is truly commendable, and it’s not every day that I find myself glued to my seat, heart pounding, with a Certified Fresh seal of approval from Rotten Tomatoes adorning the film’s poster. However, amidst this sea of acclaimed films, there are always those that stir controversy, and such is the case with Ti West’s latest directorial effort, MaXXXine.

2021 has been a standout year for horror films, with most major releases garnering positive critical acclaim, some even earning the prestigious “Certified Fresh” label from Rotten Tomatoes, a well-known review aggregator. However, the genre of horror is notorious for being divisive, and one of this year’s highly anticipated movies has also stirred up a fair amount of debate among fans.

We’re talking about the movie titled “MaXXXine,” which is the third installment in Ti West’s highly praised slasher trilogy. The series began with the 2022 film “X” and continued with the prequel movie “Pearl.” After premiering in cinemas this July, “MaXXXine” became available for streaming on Max in October. At that time, it quickly found a place among the Top 10, sharing the chart with one of this year’s hit psychological thrillers, “Trap.” As of now, West’s latest film is ranked at #9.

As a devoted admirer, I’m always eager to share my thoughts about the latest additions to our favorite franchises. In this case, it’s the third installment of the MaXXXine trilogy. Despite boasting impressive numbers on review aggregators with a 72% approval score, and an even higher audience rating of 76%, you might find it surprising that I describe it as “polarizing.

If you frequently engage on platforms like Letterboxd, Reddit, or the “Film” section of X (previously Twitter), you’ll encounter a variety of contrasting opinions about the film, mainly because its third act concludes with a clear revelation and certain excessive scenes that might not resonate with everyone. The film MaXXXine boldly embraces its Giallo and neo-noir influences, showing respect to filmmakers like Brian De Palma and movies such as Ms. 45.

What is MaXXXine about?

If you haven’t seen the movie just yet, I suggest starting with X and Pearl before moving on to MaXXXine. However, if you prefer, you can jump right into MaXXXine as well. Similar to other films in the trilogy, this one features Mia Goth in the main role.

This time around, she’s portraying Maxine Minx, a determined actress who survived the Texas massacre six years ago that claimed the lives of all her friends. Since then, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue her ambition of becoming famous, and luckily, she got a part in a horror film.

however, the streets pose a threat due to an unidentified murderer known as the Night Stalker who has been terrorizing people, claiming several lives in LA. This unfortunate event has made Maxine a potential target as some of her recent friends have fallen victim to this killer, causing suspicion to point towards her. It appears that a dangerous predator is on the loose and his path seems ominously close to Maxine’s own.

Stream MaXXXine now on Max.
