2024 Logie Awards: Guy Sebastian and Jess Mauboy divide viewers with their ‘eulogy’ to John Farnham following courageous cancer battle: ‘He’s not dead!
As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of music and entertainment, I have long admired the career and resilience of John Farnham. However, reading about his latest health challenges has deeply moved me. Having faced my own battles with cancer, I understand the fear and uncertainty that comes with such a diagnosis.
The Logies paid tribute to one of Australia’s greatest icons on Sunday night.
David Campbell enthusiastically spoke at length, praising John Farmer and detailing his notable achievements and numerous accolades.
David mentioned that he sold more than six million albums, maintained a career lasting six decades, and is widely recognized as one of the greatest live entertainers the world has experienced.
Let’s give a special mention to John’s spouse Jill, his sons Robert and James, Glenn Wheatley’s wife Gaynor, and their son Tim Wheatley tonight. However, it’s essential to highlight that this evening is all about honoring you, John. You truly embody the spirit of Australia. Tonight, we celebrate you as the quintessential Aussie figure. You are the voice, my friend, he stated.
As a fervent admirer, I couldn’t help but feel my heart race when David announced the appearance of none other than Guy Sebastian and Jessica Mauboy on stage. They proceeded to deliver a breathtaking rendition of one of Farnham’s most iconic songs, “You’re The Voice,” leaving me utterly captivated and in awe.
Audience members felt the tribute was insensitive, expressing that although John is fighting cancer, he is not yet deceased. The on-stage honors seemed to imply that the popular musician had already passed away.
As a devoted follower, I wanted to share that John, whom we all know, has been dealing with some health challenges as he had a documentary and some personal health issues recently. However, I am relieved and excited to report that he is still among us. This update would be more appropriate for the Arias, Australia’s renowned music awards, where we can all celebrate his resilience together.
1. ‘John Farnham has supposedly passed away, but it turns out he’s just pulling our leg!’ joked one person, to which another replied, ‘Whoa! Farnsy is very much alive! This isn’t a farewell speech.’ (Informal and conversational)
Hey there! I’ve been a fan of Farnsy since I was a kid, just like most of us, but let me tell ya, he ain’t no ghost. I’ve seen him perform live more times than I can count, and he’s always full of life and energy. So, while we all love and appreciate the impact he’s had on our lives through his art, let’s remember that he’s still very much alive and kicking! Let’s keep celebrating Farnsy and his legacy, but not as if he’s gone forever. After all, the show must go on!
others expressed satisfaction with the tribute, with one individual penning, “I believe it’s more fitting to honor our exceptionally gifted legends while they are still among us! Love you, John.”
1. “Jessica Mauboy, your voice is incredible!! That was flawless!” wrote someone else, with another adding, “It makes perfect sense for Jessica and Guy to perform a John Farnham cover.”
In August 2023, Farnham revealed he’s cancer-free, 12 months after having mouth surgery in 2022.
Previously, updates about the renowned Australian musician were shared by Farnham’s family, after the medical procedure that took place in August 2022.
On Sunrise, Robert shared that his father John is recovering exceptionally well following a 12-hour operation for throat cancer.
The artist who gained fame with the song “That’s Freedom” was also admitted to the hospital due to a chest infection that occurred post-surgery, which aimed to eliminate a malignant growth in his mouth.
It seems very doubtful that Farnham will take the stage again, given he had a lengthy operation to extract a tumor from his mouth.
The operation, carried out by 26 medical staff, also saw a major part of his jaw removed.
It wasn’t until Farnham’s wife, Jill, persuaded him to see a doctor due to a prolonged mouth sore that he learned about the cancerous growth in his mouth.
In April, it was revealed that John will be publishing his personal memoir, titled “The Voice Inside,” approximately a year following his oral cancer surgery.
