2024 introduces us to 5 amazing new final girls
As a huge fan of horror films, I’ve seen my fair share of final girls over the years. But none have left as big an impression on me as Maxine from the “X” trilogy. Having started her journey in the first installment looking to make it big in adult film, Maxine was poised for stardom – that is until her cast and crew were brutally murdered by Pearl and Howard.
As a horror movie enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must confess that this year has truly outdone itself in terms of chilling tales and unforgettable performances by female characters. The first half of 2023 has seen the release of some genuinely terrifying masterpieces that have left me utterly spellbound.
1. Maika Monroe as Lee Harker from Longlegs
The movie “Longlegs” left a deep impression on me. Since watching it, I’ve been unable to forget its haunting images, eerie ambiance, and the exceptional acting. In my view, Nicolas Cage delivered an outstanding performance as Longlegs, while Maika Monroe left an indelible mark on me with her role.
Lee Harker is a intricately crafted character who prefers solitude yet possesses an uncanny ability to trust her instincts, making her an effective detective. Unyielding in her pursuit, she refused to rest until she uncovered Longlegs’ true identity and the link between him and the series of murders. The enigma that is Harker captivates us due to her peculiar upbringing and the elusive nature of her intuition. Despite being unable to rationalize it, her gut feeling proved invaluable during the investigation.
In the climax, she’s compelled to confront the reality of her past and her mother’s influence. She’s got a tough decision to make: sticking with her sole family or siding with Agent Carter’s daughter. The compelling female character of Harker, known as the final girl, is someone you’ll want to cheer for because of her intelligence and courage, particularly in those crucial moments.
2. Nell Tiger Free as Margaret from The First Omen
Regarding exceptional acting, I can’t help but bring up Nell Tiger Free and her role as Margaret in “The First Omen.” This film left a pleasant impression on me, as I typically have low expectations for prequels. A significant portion of my admiration goes to Free and the gripping possession scene towards the end, which beautifully pays tribute to the 1981 classic “Possession.”
Young’s acting in this film is truly mesmerizing. Initially, she portrays the role of our heroine, working tirelessly to prevent a dreadful outcome for Carlita. Simultaneously, Margaret exhibits immense compassion and kindness towards the orphanage residents, all while grappling with her personal struggles. Driven by an insatiable need for the truth, she is determined to expose the church’s nefarious plans and protect more girls from harm.
Despite being unaware of her role in it at the time, she ultimately gives birth to a girl and a boy, with the latter being identified as the antichrist. Determined to protect her daughter and Carlita, Margaret chooses to live secluded in the mountains, distancing herself from the church. Though valiantly attempting to thwart the prophecy by contemplating the unthinkable act of harming her own son, she ultimately cannot bring herself to commit such an act due to her pure nature.
3. Mia Goth as Maxine Minx from MaXXXine
I found MaXXXine disappointing despite my high expectations, fueled by my fondness for Pearl and X. However, Mia Goth’s portrayal of Maxine was the redeeming factor for me in this film. Given her role as a final girl for the second time, it was only natural for her to be included on this list.
Maxine’s journey began in the initial part of the trilogy titled “X” with aspirations of making it big. However, her opportunity to shine in the adult film industry was cruelly taken away when Pearl and Howard brutally killed her co-stars and crew. In the end, only Maxine survived among the carnage, having left behind Texas and a chilling trail of bodies.
As a big fan of MaXXXine, I’m thrilled to see her making it big in The Puritan II. At long last, she’s getting the opportunity to shine as a true Hollywood star. But just as things start looking up for Maxine, her past comes back to haunt her and threaten her hard-earned chance at success.
4. Melissa Barrera as Joey from Abigail
I was taken aback by Abigail’s presence in the film and pleasantly surprised by my enjoyment of this campy vampire gore festival. My sole reason for attending was Melissa Barrera’s participation, and she certainly didn’t fall short.
Joey is a morally ambiguous mother, striving to help her son, who finds herself involved in a kidnapping. Initially hesitant due to the young age of Abigail, Joey is eventually swayed by the financial incentive. Determined to ensure Abigael’s wellbeing, she distinguishes herself from her fellow accomplices. However, despite her efforts, Abigail manages to escape and unveils a shocking secret: she is a vampire who intends to claim the lives of everyone involved.
I’ve watched many movies, but none compare to the resilience and determination of Joey. She’s in a desperate fight for something precious – the opportunity to be reunited with her son. Unlike other characters I’ve seen, like Abigail from that horror-comedy, Joey stands out. In a captivating way, she delivers both strength and humor, making us root for her even more.
5. Andrea Pavlovic as Kris from In a Violent Nature
As a seasoned horror movie enthusiast with a soft spot for indie productions, I’ve seen my fair share of unique and chilling films. However, “In a Violent Nature” left me feeling a bit divided. On one hand, there were elements that truly resonated with me – the inventive kills and picturesque shots that added to the eerie atmosphere.
In a Violent Nature brings to mind the feeling of Friday the 13th, as both involve a disastrous camping trip. However, In a Violent Nature deviates from this pattern by focusing on a group of friends whose misfortune begins when they accidentally revive evil by discovering a locket. Subsequently, these friends meet their demise in a typical slasher movie manner. The film showcases Johnny’s relentless pursuit to reclaim his locket.
As a gamer, I can say that Kris made it on this list not due to a tragic demise like some other characters, but instead, she managed to survive against all odds. Granted, she may not have had the emotional complexity of the other women in the game, but her determination to live was commendable. She left behind her precious locket for Johnny and hobbled on with an injured leg. I found myself cheering her on, reminiscent of my feelings towards Alice, a legendary final girl.
