The Simpsons are making a comeback to the big screen after 20 years since their first movie and 38 years since the show initially aired. Back in July 2007, The Simpsons Movie premiered as the highly anticipated film version of the beloved animated series. It was both a commercial and critical success, earning $537 million globally and achieving an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Discussions about a follow-up film began when the first movie ended, famously concluding with Maggie Simpson’s “first words” – “sequel?” – but there haven’t been any updates on that possibility for ten years.
Walt Disney Pictures and 20th Century Studios have officially announced The Simpsons Movie 2 with a teaser poster shared on Instagram. The poster features Homer Simpson reaching for his signature pink frosted donut, and the shadow of his hands forms the number two. The tagline playfully states, “Homer’s coming back for seconds.” The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on July 23, 2027. Currently, no specific details regarding the plot of the sequel have been revealed.
‘The Simpsons Movie 2’ Actually Changes the MCU’s Plans
The Simpsons Movie 2 has taken the spot on the release schedule that was originally intended for an unannounced Marvel Cinematic Universe film, which Disney has now removed from its plans. This leaves a gap in the MCU schedule with no films planned between Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, potentially creating a big cliffhanger that will have fans waiting a full year for answers. As a result, Secret Wars will be the sole MCU movie released in 2027, marking only the fourth time the franchise has released just one film in a year – following Iron Man 2 in 2010, The Avengers in 2012, and Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024.
The Simpsons Movie was released on July 27, 2007, so the new sequel is coming out almost twenty years later. Surprisingly, that’s a longer wait than the time between when The Simpsons originally aired on Fox in 1989 and the release of The Simpsons Movie. People already thought the first movie took a while to come out, so this even longer gap is quite a surprise. The sequel, The Simpsons Movie Season 2, will air between Seasons 38 and 39, meaning the show will have been on the air for almost 40 years.
The Simpsons Movie 2 probably won’t be the last installment of The Simpsons. Fox has renewed the show through Season 40, although the seasons will be shorter. The Simpsons is a long-running, hugely popular series that has been a part of popular culture for longer than many people have been alive. It’s actually quite funny to consider that The Simpsons Movie came out before the Marvel Cinematic Universe began, before Avatar was released, and before franchises like Twilight, The Minions, and others became famous. Back in 2002, the episode “Gump Roast” ended with the song “They’ll Never Stop The Simpsons,” which turned out to be one of the most accurate predictions made by The Simpsons.
