Supergirl has battled many powerful enemies over the years. These villains were usually aliens or people with superpowers, since ordinary humans weren’t much of a challenge for her. Lex Luthor stands out as a particularly memorable foe, because he often outsmarted Supergirl rather than defeating her in a fight.
The Supergirl TV series didn’t always have strong villains, and many viewers felt this was a weak point compared to other shows in the Arrowverse. However, the villains weren’t necessarily weak themselves – Supergirl was just so powerful that they often seemed less threatening in comparison.
Krem of the Yellow Hills is an Evil Space Pirate
Recently, fans were introduced to Krem, portrayed by Matthias Schoenaerts. However, the on-screen version looks quite different from how he’s depicted in the comics. Originally, Krem was a simple-looking character with red hair, often shirtless, who relied on his charisma and cunning to cause trouble and exploit others for his own benefit.
As a big fan, I’m really excited about how they’re portraying Krem in the live-action adaptation. He feels much more genuinely alien and threatening than I expected, and it makes me wonder if they’ll expand on his powers. In the comics, Krem was mostly just a highly skilled archer and fighter, relying on his training. He did have one advantage, though – his home planet had a red sun, which kind of leveled the playing field when he went up against Supergirl. Plus, he possessed this incredibly powerful artifact called the Mordru Globe; it could basically teleport anyone to the other side of the galaxy! It’ll be interesting to see if they incorporate that into the show.
Metallo Was a Tough Test for Supergirl and Superman
Okay, so the story of Metallo is pretty wild. This guy, John Corben, was basically left for dead after taking a bullet to the chest. But then, Project Cadmus stepped in and saved him… with a seriously twisted fix. They replaced a big part of his chest with Kryptonite! That’s what powers all the tech inside him and keeps him going. The really messed up part? It turns out someone hired Corben, a professional assassin, to take out his own sister – Lena Luthor – even while she was locked up. Can you believe that?
After being rescued, Corben gained incredible power and began working for Cadmus. He used abilities fueled by Kryptonite to battle Supergirl and Superman in Season 2 of Supergirl. With his Kryptonite beams, immense strength, and fighting skills, he became a dangerous enemy, challenging both heroes significantly.
Bizarro Supergirl Was an Undead Villain Programmed to Kill Supergirl
Bizarro is traditionally a villain who resembles Superman in comic books, but the TV show Supergirl changed the character’s backstory. In the first season of Supergirl, Maxwell Lord was an early antagonist who created a version of Bizarro specifically to destroy Supergirl. Unlike the comic book version which is a clone, this Bizarro was a genetically altered, reanimated body that Lord had been working on for some time. She wasn’t the only woman Lord experimented on – his other attempts to create a similar being were unsuccessful.
I’ve always been fascinated by Bizarro Supergirl. She’s like a twisted mirror image of Kara, incredibly strong but lacking her intelligence. It’s wild that she has powers that are the opposite of Supergirl’s – she can freeze things with her eyes and breathe fire! What’s even stranger is how she reacts to kryptonite; it doesn’t just weaken her, it actually burns her skin, a totally different reaction than other Kryptonians. She was essentially created as a weapon, and honestly, if she hadn’t been contained, she could have caused a lot more trouble for National City than even Supergirl has faced.
Astra Is a Match for Supergirl
Astra is the aunt of Kara Zor-El, arriving on Earth after the prison ship Fort Rozz crashed. She and Kara were close as children, but Astra was later imprisoned by her sister for committing crimes against the people of Krypton. These actions stemmed from Astra’s belief that the Kryptonian government was destroying the planet by overusing its resources. Though she tried to save Krypton and reveal the truth about its fate, she wasn’t successful.
Astra first attempts to recruit her niece, Supergirl, to help her conquer Earth, but Supergirl refuses, opposing Astra’s villainous path. While equally powerful, Astra wears a suit that shields her from Kryptonite, allowing her to use it against Supergirl. She also leads a group of alien criminals who follow her orders. Though a formidable opponent for Supergirl, Astra’s affection for her niece sometimes holds her back.
Psi Is One of the Strongest Forgotten Supergirl Villains
Gayle Marsh, known as Psi, is a criminal with powerful psychic abilities – she can read minds, move objects with her mind, and project fear. She targets National City and becomes a formidable opponent for Supergirl. While the source of her powers is never revealed in Supergirl, Psi is considered one of the hero’s most challenging villains.
Psi has the ability to invade people’s minds with frightening thoughts, drawing strength from their deepest fears. This gives her a significant advantage against most heroes – for example, she quickly overwhelmed Supergirl during their first encounter. She’s even defeated powerful heroes like Martian Manhunter in psychic combat. Although she hasn’t been a major character, appearing in only a few episodes, her power is undeniable. Supergirl recognized this in Season 3 and sought her help to defeat Reign, sending Saturn Girl and Livewire on a risky mission to Fort Rozz in the process.
Agent Liberty Was an Earth-Centric Evil Captain America
Supergirl’s arrival, along with other people with superpowers, frightened some residents of National City and sparked widespread fear and prejudice against aliens. A key figure leading this anti-alien movement was Ben Lockwood, who had been deeply affected by past events on the show Supergirl. These events led him to undergo an experimental treatment, which fundamentally changed him – similar to how Steve Rogers was transformed by the Super-Soldier serum.
Following an injection of Harun-El, Lockwood transformed into “Agent Liberty” and began battling what he believed were alien invaders. Though not as powerful as heroes like Supergirl or Martian Manhunter, he was strong enough to fight them. He was also exceptionally intelligent and a skilled speaker, which he used to stir up anti-alien sentiment.
Red Kryptonite Supergirl Was a Deadly Threat
Melissa Benoist has portrayed different versions of Supergirl throughout the Arrowverse, even playing characters who were enemies of Supergirl. One early example was a version affected by Red Kryptonite. When exposed to this artificial substance, Supergirl’s personality changes, and she acts on her worst impulses. While this Red-K Supergirl was a dangerous opponent for a single episode, she wasn’t a long-term villain.
Okay, let me tell you, Red-K Supergirl was genuinely terrifying. She was totally spiraling out of control, just wreaking havoc all over National City. Seeing Alex Danvers go up against her was intense – this wasn’t the Supergirl anyone knew. It turns out, Red-K Supergirl was desperate to be worshipped, and she’d do anything to get it. The red kryptonite didn’t just make her angry, it supercharged her powers, making her a seriously formidable – and frightening – villain. Honestly, she felt like one of the biggest threats this season.
Lex Luthor Was More Than Just a Genius Villain
Lex Luthor is a well-known enemy of Superman, and the TV show Supergirl also featured him as a villain. When Jon Cryer was chosen to play Lex Luthor, many fans were skeptical, considering his previous roles. However, Cryer ended up delivering one of the best performances of Lex Luthor ever. He became a significant character beyond Supergirl, playing a major part in the Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline.
Lex Luthor isn’t a physically imposing villain – Supergirl could easily defeat him in a fight. But, like in the comics, his greatest strength is his incredible intelligence. He consistently uses his mind to outsmart opponents. In Supergirl, he utilizes the Lexosuit, which boosts his strength and durability, allowing him to compete with more powerful foes. He briefly possessed natural powers through the Book of Destiny during Crisis and by using the Harun-El serum in Supergirl Season 4. Ultimately, Lex is a dangerous enemy who is constantly seeking ways to become even more powerful.
Indigo Was One of the Most Powerful Early Threats in Supergirl
Indigo, also known as Brainiac 8, was a villain on the first season of Supergirl, appearing alongside Astra and Non. She’s a member of the Coluan race—intelligent humanoids and descendants of Superman’s enemy, Brainiac. Initially, Indigo appeared as a blonde hacker on screens, but she later revealed her true Coluan form when she met Supergirl in person.
Indigo is incredibly intelligent, and that’s her biggest strength. However, her tech skills caused trouble when she unexpectedly appeared from a computer screen and used her super strength to attack Supergirl. Beyond that, her ability to stretch her limbs makes her a truly formidable villain – one of the most powerful Supergirl has ever faced.
Silver Banshee Has Been Both Friend and Foe
Silver Banshee, like many of Supergirl’s enemies, started as a foe of Supergirl’s cousin. However, her relationship with Kara Zor-El has shifted over time – she’s been both an ally and a villain. When Kara first arrived on Earth, she needed friends, and she quickly connected with Siobhan Smythe, who would become the Silver Banshee because of a family curse that dated back generations.
In the New 52 comics, Silver Banshee became an ally to Supergirl, while her father took on the role of the villain, becoming known as the Black Banshee. Later, Silver Banshee reverted to her original, villainous form, becoming a powerful and dangerous enemy to Superman and his allies due to her magical abilities related to death.
