Surprisingly, two critically acclaimed shows that were once Netflix favorites are now exclusive to Disney+. While Netflix boasts a vast library of original content and has become known for its shows and movies, certain hits like Stranger Things, Squid Game, Wednesday, and Bridgerton have been key to the platform’s success.
As a huge fan of streaming, I’ve always known Netflix usually keeps its original shows locked down – they made them, so why would they let them go? Unlike network TV shows like Suits which move when licensing deals end, you’d expect Netflix originals to stay put. But it’s been so strange to see two of what I consider Netflix’s best shows actually leave the platform. It really feels unusual, considering they were created by Netflix in the first place.
Daredevil And Jessica Jones Were Two Of Netflix’s Best Original Series
Netflix had two standout original series based on Marvel comics: Daredevil and Jessica Jones. Both shows offered a darker, more realistic take on the superhero genre, focusing on crime and suspense. Daredevil followed Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) as he juggled his work as a lawyer with his fight against crime boss Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin. Jessica Jones starred Krysten Ritter as Jessica, a superhero battling the manipulative villain Kilgrave (David Tennant).
Netflix hosted several Marvel series, including Luke Cage, The Punisher, Iron Fist, and The Defenders. However, Daredevil and Jessica Jones truly stood out. Both shows uniquely combined superhero elements with a realistic and dark tone, exploring complex moral questions. Even without the Marvel connection, they would have been excellent crime dramas.
The quality of Jessica Jones and Daredevil speaks for itself. Both shows received high praise, with Jessica Jones averaging scores in the 80s and Daredevil in the 90s on Rotten Tomatoes. They were incredibly popular with both critics and viewers, and remain enjoyable even years later. However, they are no longer available to stream on Netflix.
Why Netflix’s Marvel Shows Left The Streaming Service
Even though Netflix had some popular Marvel shows like Daredevil and Jessica Jones, they were removed from the service in February 2022. These shows weren’t actually made by Netflix; Disney, which owns Marvel, simply licensed them to Netflix. When that licensing agreement ended in 2022, Disney took back the rights to stream them (according to Vanity Fair).
The leasing agreement also had another important condition: Netflix prohibited characters from its shows—like Daredevil and The Punisher—from appearing in any movies or shows outside of Netflix. After Netflix canceled Daredevil in 2018, reportedly to finish the series strong but likely because fewer people were watching, Matt Murdock was able to appear in the 2021 film Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The Defenders Are Finally Reuniting On Disney+
Fans of the old Netflix Marvel series have reason to be excited! It looks like the Defenders – Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist – might be teaming up again, this time on Disney+. Matt Murdock and Frank Castle have already been seen in the Daredevil: Born Again series, and Jessica Jones appeared in the trailer for season 2. Plus, there are hints that Luke Cage and Iron Fist could also join the show, with actor Mike Colter (who played Luke Cage) suggesting a possible return in a recent interview with MovieWeb.
Disney is planning a major reunion of the Defenders team in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again. Though the original shows are no longer available on Netflix, they’re continuing on Disney+, which is good news for fans. It’s unfortunate that shows like Daredevil and Jessica Jones aren’t currently on Netflix, but the stories are still accessible for fans of the franchise.
