2 new (and 4 returning) Netflix shows you need to watch in December 2024
As a seasoned Netflix enthusiast with over a decade of binge-watching under my belt, let me tell you that this December is shaping up to be a veritable feast for us streaming connoisseurs! With a smorgasbord of new shows spanning various genres and catering to diverse tastes, it seems like Santa Claus himself has taken residence at Netflix HQ.
In an exciting fashion, Netflix is wrapping up the year by offering a collection of engaging series and films worth watching! A total of six fresh Netflix series are scheduled for release in December 2024, making them perfect additions to your viewing list during the festive holiday period.
I’ve been covering Netflix for a decade, and the December lineup is always a little bit hit or miss! There are always some big shows that premiere in December, including new seasons of You, Bridgerton, The Witcher, some Harlan Coben shows, and more. This year, I’d say this is one of the best Netflix show lineups to end the year that we’ve seen in a long time. Every week, there’s a new high-profile show for Netflix subscribers to watch in December. That’s about as much as we can ask for, right?
Check out this list I compiled featuring six exciting Netflix series premiering in December – two brand-new ones and four fan favorites making a comeback! Let’s first discuss the freshly released Netflix shows, followed by a look at the returning ones.
Black Doves
Release date: Thursday, Dec. 5
Black Doves is first up on the list! It’s the Christmas spy thriller that you’ve been waiting your whole life to watch. I don’t know if there’s another Christmas spy thriller, but I have a feeling it’s worse than what Joe Barton put together in Black Doves.
As an enthusiastic viewer, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll soon be witnessing Keira Knightley grace our screens once more in her first Christmas-themed production since “Silent Night” in 2021. In the intriguingly titled series, “Black Doves”, she slips into the role of Helen Webb – a captivating spy belonging to an enigmatic organization known as Black Doves, and the wife of the British Defense Minister Wallace, portrayed by Andrew Buchan.
After her partner, Jason, meets a tragic end, Helen embarks on a quest to unravel the truth behind his death, finding herself entangled in a global predicament. Fortunately for her, she has Sam – a trusted ally, ex-assassin portrayed by Ben Whishaw – who stands ready to protect her.
Netflix has a good feeling about Black Doves. It’s already coming back for season 2!
No Good Deed
Release date: Thursday, Dec. 12
As a fan of dark comedies, I can’t help but recommend “No Good Deed” starring Lisa Kudrow and Ray Romano. Created by the brilliant mind behind Netflix’s hit series “Dead to Me,” Liz Feldman, this show is destined to be one of Netflix’s most-watched comedies in a while!
The show, titled “No Good Deed“, seems somewhat similar to Beef, though it remains uncertain if it will escalate to the same degree of turmoil. This series focuses on multiple families searching for a new home, who surprisingly choose the same one. From there, things start to get quite intriguing! Additionally, Netflix hints at “secrets” in “No Good Deed“, and I can’t help but be drawn to mysteries waiting to unfold.
There’s no update on the second season of “No Good Deed” yet, but I’m quite optimistic about it. In fact, I have a strong sense that this series is going to be a massive success. Frankly, it seems like we’ve all been yearning for a show in this vein since “Dead to Me” concluded.
The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On season 3
Release date: Wednesday, Dec. 4
As a dedicated viewer of reality TV, I can confidently say that Netflix has been knocking it out of the park, particularly in the realm of dating shows. They consistently deliver content that keeps us hooked, giving us exactly what we crave for! It feels like there’s always a new dating show premiering on Netflix every other month, and I couldn’t be happier with this pace!
The popular series “The Ultimatum” is back for its third season on Netflix, and it’s been a while since the previous one aired. The last season was released on Netflix in August 2023, so I imagine everyone is eager to see these couples decide whether to tie the knot or part ways.
In simpler terms, “The Ultimatum” is a show that focuses on couples who are deciding whether to deepen their commitment or part ways. During this social experiment, the partners temporarily split up and live with other individuals for a short period. After the trial concludes, each couple must decide if they will break up permanently, get engaged, remain with their new partner, or leave single.
Here’s The Ultimatum season 3 release schedule:
- Episodes 1-5: Dec. 4
- Episodes 6-8: Dec. 11
- Episodes 9-10: Dec. 18
This holiday season, if you’re on the lookout for an engaging new reality show, I highly recommend giving The Ultimatum season 3 a try! It’s certainly worth your time!
Queer Eye season 9
Release date: Wednesday, Dec. 11
I find it hard to believe that Queer Eye is starting its ninth season this month, yet I couldn’t be more excited! It’s a show that embodies compassion, support, and self-discovery, making it one of the most uplifting programs on television. There’s nothing quite like it!
For the upcoming Season 9, the quartet consisting of Tan France, Antoni Porowski, Karamo Brown, and Jonathan Van Ness will be back, with the action moving to Las Vegas. The departure from the series was seen in the previous season by Bobby Berk, but Jeremiah Brent is now set to join the Fab Five in this new season.
All 10 episodes of Queer Eye season 9 will be released on Dec. 11.
Virgin River season 6
Release date: Thursday, Dec. 19
For some time now, we’ve been anticipating the Christmas premiere of “Virgin River” Season 6 on Netflix. However, it wasn’t until late November that we received the first complete trailer for the new season. And let me tell you, it delivers exactly what fans have been eagerly waiting for – at least in trailer form.
As I, the eager gamer, dive back into the world of Virgin River for its sixth season, Alexandra Breckenridge and Martin Henderson reprise their roles as Mel and Jack. With so much uncharted territory left from the previous season, it seems we’re in for an emotional journey reminiscing about the past, as we delve deeper into Mel’s family history.
Apart from Zibby Allen, Benjamin Hollingsworth, Colin Lawrence, Tim Matheson, Marco Grazzini, Annette O’Toole, Sarah Dugdale, Kai Bradbury, Kandyse McClure, Mark Ghanime, and others, the entire cast is also returning!
There’s still some time left to watch through the initial five seasons of Virgin River before the next season premieres on Netflix. How about another viewing, it seems like a good idea to me!
Squid Game season 2
Release date: Thursday, Dec. 26
To wrap things up, the second season of Netflix’s all-time favorite series, “Squid Game,” is set to premiere a day after Christmas. Needless to say, this is one of the most eagerly awaited seasons on Netflix that has garnered unprecedented attention. Indeed, it’s hard to find someone who didn’t enjoy it!
Was another season necessary? Frankly, I can’t say for sure, but I’m not going to argue about it. Given the way the first season concluded, there certainly seems to be more narrative to explore here. All I can hope is that creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has all the resources he needs to develop this season (and potentially the one following it as well).
Here is the synopsis for Squid Game season 2, via Netflix:
Three years following my triumph at Squid Game, I’ve decided against venturing overseas and instead returned home with a fresh resolve. Once more, Gi-hun plunges into the enigmatic survival contest, embarking on another round of life-or-death battles with an assortment of new contenders, all vying for the staggering 45.6 billion won prize.
For the second season, we have returning stars such as Lee Jung-jae, Wi Ha-jun, Gong Yoo, and Lee Byung-hun. Additionally, new faces join the cast including Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, and others!
Squid Game is already renewed for a third and final season, which is coming to Netflix in 2025!
The following is a collection of upcoming Netflix series slated for release in December 2024. However, it’s important to note that this is not the complete list; in fact, our count reveals that there will be as many as 28 new Netflix shows being added to their library during that month!
Like I said, it’s going to be a great month. Happy streaming!
