2 best true crime shows on Netflix (and 1 to skip)

As a seasoned gamer and armchair detective, I have to say that Netflix has been knocking it out of the park with their true crime documentaries and series. From uncovering the dark secrets behind the murder of Victor Jara in Chile, to delving into the heart-wrenching case of Shannan Watts in Colorado, they’ve been leaving no stone unturned.

Over the past few years, Netflix has shown a strong commitment towards true crime series. Given their widespread appeal, this isn’t too unexpected. Despite stiff rivalry, Netflix manages to maintain its position in the market.

In terms of true crime content, Netflix is known for exploring a wide variety of cases. For example, they delved into the murder of Chilean musician and activist Victor Jara in the documentary “ReMastered: Massacre at the Stadium”. However, it’s not uncommon for Netflix to also focus on cases that are more local, like the tragic murder of Shannan Watts and her two children, perpetrated by her husband Chris Watts.

When it comes to true crime shows, Netflix explores numerous storylines. Occasionally, they provide a comprehensive examination of a case, but at other times their attempts might not be as successful. Here’s a rundown of the ones that are engaging and those you might want to pass on.

Watch: Don’t F**k with Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer

In the Netflix documentary titled “Don’t Fool Around with Cats,” an online detective team banded together to chase down an individual who had an unsettling obsession with cats. The story began in 2010 when a man named Luka Magnotta from Canada started sharing videos depicting him cruelly mistreating and murdering kittens as entertainment.

A short while later, the atrocities committed by Magnotta grew more severe. He recorded himself committing these heinous acts, which included the murder and dismemberment of a Chinese national named Lin Jun, who was reportedly an ex-partner of his. Magnotta has since been found guilty of these crimes and is currently serving his time in a medium-security facility.

Watch: American Murder: Laci Peterson

This chilling story still lingers in people’s minds today. On Christmas Eve of 2002, Laci Peterson, heavily pregnant at the time, seemingly disappeared without a trace. As efforts to find her grew, so did suspicion towards her husband, Scott Peterson, particularly after Amber Frey, a woman who had an affair with him, stepped forward and confessed.

In April 2003, Laci’s remains were discovered months after her disappearance, and Scott was arrested soon afterward. The documentary “American Murder: Laci Peterson” chronicles the legal proceedings of Scott’s trial as Laci’s family and acquaintances strive for justice.

Skip: Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel

Over the years, the Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles has been shrouded in a troubling history, with numerous instances of murder and suicide connected to the hotel since its opening to guests in 1927.

In 2013, a young woman named Elisa Lam from Vancouver went missing. She was last seen riding an elevator in a hotel. Sadly, her body was discovered later in a tank of water on the hotel’s rooftop. The event was ultimately classified as an accident.

Although it does so, the Netflix documentary delves into various conspiracy theories surrounding Lam’s demise, a topic that some find distasteful.
