2 best crime shows on Netflix to watch (and 1 to skip)
As a seasoned gamer and a connoisseur of crime shows, I’ve seen more episodes than I care to remember. From the golden days of CBS to the modern era of Netflix, I’ve been there, done that. And let me tell you, Netflix has truly outdone itself when it comes to crime dramas.
It’s been apparent for quite some time now that people are drawn to crime dramas, even before Netflix existed. However, since its launch in 2007, Netflix has swiftly matched this trend and has since become a popular destination for countless crime shows that keep audiences glued to their screens series after series.
To illustrate, the popular CBS series “NCIS” and another successful crime show from CBS, “S.W.A.T.”, have been mainstays on Netflix for quite some time. Additionally, Netflix has made the Emmy-winning crime drama “Breaking Bad” accessible to its members. Furthermore, classic shows like “Dexter”, “Prison Break”, and “The Blacklist” have also migrated to Netflix as new additions.
Over time, the leading streamer has progressively expanded its collection of original crime dramas, with some achieving success and others falling short. Here are two crime series worth watching, as well as one you might want to pass on.
Watch: Mindhunter
In the 70s, the series “Mindhunter” unfolds, focusing on FBI agents Bill Tench (portrayed by Holt McCallany) and Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff). Alongside psychologist Wendy Carr (Anna Torv), they delve into psychological profiling to apprehend some of the era’s most heinous criminals. While the show’s narratives are fabricated, they are based on genuine events that transpired in history.
Beyond its captivating storylines, it’s clear that the Emmy-nominated series gained immense popularity not only because of its talented ensemble cast but also due to David Fincher directing certain episodes and Oscar winner Charlize Theron serving as one of the executive producers, along with Fincher.
Mindhunter ran for two seasons.
Skip: Florida Man
In this Netflix crime series with limited episodes, Emmy-nominated actor Edgar Ramírez portrays Mike Valentine, a former Florida police officer who returns home following an agreement to find a girlfriend of a mobster. As anticipated, the task turns out to be more complex than it appears, and it doesn’t take long before Valentine encounters trouble.
Here, Ramírez delivers an impressive performance, showcasing his knack for both dramatic and comical roles. His interpretation of the character is particularly noteworthy. Nevertheless, the narrative seems somewhat familiar, as if it has been explored before.
Watch: The Law According to Lidia Poët
In this Italian crime drama on Netflix, the main character is Lidia Poët, Italy’s first female lawyer. The story takes place in 19th century Turin, and follows Matilda De Angelis as she skillfully portrays the determined Lidia, striving to establish herself amidst a challenging male-dominated legal field.
Imagine a grittier take on the story of Enola Holmes. Historically, Poët had a short-lived legal career that ended in disbarment. However, she was reinstated as a lawyer at the ripe age of 65.
