Director Denis Villeneuve has shared a first look at his upcoming sci-fi film, Dune 3, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Initial reactions to the footage describe it as powerful, moving, and a departure from previous installments.

A seven-minute preview of Dune: Part Three was shown at CinemaCon, giving audiences a dramatic opening to the concluding film. The footage highlighted a massive battle sequence with Stilgar (Javier Bardem) leading Fremen warriors into fight. Director Denis Villeneuve has called the film a “thriller” and stated his intention to explore new territory rather than simply recreating what he’s done before (according to USA Today).

The director described the new movie as more intense and emotionally powerful than previous installments. Picking up the story 17 years later, it’s based on ‘Dune Messiah’ and follows Paul Atreides as he continues to grapple with difficult challenges. Timothée Chalamet, who plays Paul, explained that his character has changed significantly, stating he’s become the person he once feared and is now fighting to retain his core values.

A big surprise was the return of Jason Momoa, but this time playing a new character named Hayt. Hayt is created from the genetic material of Duncan Idaho. Momoa explained that his character is a test for Paul, sent to see how he reacts to someone completely unfamiliar. Zendaya is also back as Chani, continuing her part in the story as it develops.

Viewers have reacted very positively to the initial look at the show. Many compared the opening sequence to the famous landing scenes in Saving Private Ryan, but set in space. Critic John Rocha expressed his excitement, saying he was “speechless” about what’s to come, and another reviewer cautioned that audiences might not be prepared for it.

Insider Jeff Sneider remarked that “Nolan might even have something to fear this awards season.”

The final movie in the trilogy is scheduled to come out on December 18th and promises to be a grand finale. Initial responses suggest it could be one of the biggest movie releases of the year.
