18 Years Later, This Unique Sci-Fi Franchise Keeps Getting Better Ahead Of Return

Few science fiction franchises have been as creatively daring as the one that began in 2008, and it continues to improve with each new installment. While franchises like Star Wars, Star Trek, Dune, Alien, and Avatar are all considered among the greatest sci-fi ever made, they all have something in common.

Many movie franchises stick to a familiar formula, but 2026 promises a lot of exciting new science fiction releases, including both original stories and continuations of established series. That got me thinking about a particularly inventive sci-fi franchise, one that consistently pushes boundaries and is poised for a comeback.

Cloverfield Is A Unique Sci-Fi Movie Franchise

J.J. Abrams (known for Star Wars) launched the Cloverfield series in 2008. The first film, a thrilling found footage monster movie, was directed by Matt Reeves (The Batman) and written by Drew Goddard (Daredevil). The team behind the camera was incredibly talented, and the movie delivered a unique and exciting science fiction experience through its innovative format.

Following the first Cloverfield film, two more movies have come out, but they aren’t direct sequels. So far, the series has been presented as a collection of standalone stories. Eight years after the original, 10 Cloverfield Lane was released in 2016. This movie shifted gears from a monster attack to a tense, psychological thriller, all while remaining within the same universe.

In 2018, Netflix unexpectedly released The Cloverfield Paradox, a sci-fi movie that explained the origins of the monster from the first Cloverfield film, featuring an alien-inspired storyline. Both this film and its sequel were initially developed as separate ideas before being connected to the Cloverfield franchise, which helped keep the series innovative and engaging.

Cloverfield Is Ready To Return In A Major Way

I’ve really enjoyed how the Cloverfield series has grown beyond its original style and explored different parts of its world, but I’m excited to hear that a direct sequel to the first movie is finally being made. Ever since the original science fiction film came out in 2008, I’ve wanted to see a whole movie dedicated to the monsters and the threat they pose.

In a recent interview with Deadline on March 16, 2025, director Babak Anvari hinted that the upcoming Cloverfield sequel is shaping up to be something special, simply stating, “Hopefully you’re going to get something amazing.” Given the franchise’s history of thrilling science fiction, many believe this new installment has the potential to be the best Cloverfield film yet.
