15M More People Watched Harris Debate Trump Than Watched the June Debate With Biden
As a lifelong political enthusiast who has witnessed countless debates, I must say that Tuesday’s debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump was a breath of fresh air. The fact-checking by ABC moderators David Muir and Linsey Davis was not only necessary but also refreshing. It’s about time someone held the President accountable for his misleading statements.
Approximately 67.1 million viewers tuned into the presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, marking a significant surge in interest compared to the June debate, which ultimately resulted in Joe Biden deciding to exit the presidential campaign.
17 various broadcasting stations aired the June debate moderated by ABC News, as reported by Nielsen. A total of 51.3 million viewers tuned into the Trump-Biden debate according to Nielsen’s data.
2016’s initial debate between Trump and Hillary Clinton set a record for presidential debate viewership, with 84 million viewers tuning in. In contrast, the first debate between Biden and Trump in 2020 attracted 73.1 million viewers, falling slightly short of that record.
Following Harris’ apparent victory in the debate against Trump on Tuesday evening, the previous president and his allies have been heavily criticizing the ABC moderators, David Muir and Linsey Davis, for their actions. During the debate, these journalists intervened with real-time fact checks, correcting four statements made by Trump.
At this moment, no additional debates have been officially planned for the two presidential contenders; however, discussions have taken place, and Fox News Channel has proposed alternatives. Meanwhile, CBS is set to stage a debate featuring the vice presidential candidates, namely Tim Walz and J.D. Vance.
The tension for next Tuesday’s debate was already significant, given the upcoming election and the fact that the previous presidential debate had sparked a chain of incidents that eventually led to Biden stepping down from the campaign following widespread criticism of his performance.
In essence, reactions to ABC’s management of the recent debate on Tuesday served as a reflection of supporters’ views on its outcome. MSNBC commentator Chris Hayes praised the moderators, labeling their performance as “excellent,” which was countered by conservative commentator Ben Shapiro, who bluntly stated, “This is how you know they’re utterly incompetent.
During Trump’s debate with Biden in June, while CNN didn’t fact-check or correct any inaccuracies from either candidate, ABC took a different approach and contested assertions made by Trump regarding topics such as abortion, immigration, the 2020 election, and violent crime.
