15 shows to stream if you like The Umbrella Academy

As a lover of the strange and supernatural, I’ve always been drawn to stories that delve into the unknown, and these series certainly fit the bill! Having spent my youth binge-watching everything from “The X-Files” to “Supernatural,” I can say with confidence that these shows are worthy additions to my watchlist.

If you’ve enjoyed watching “The Umbrella Academy” as it concludes its run, there are numerous other series that you might find appealing!

The Umbrella Academy has been one of Netflix’s biggest original series. Based on the cult comic book, six superpowered kids are brought together by a millionaire to save the world. The show is known for its outlandish characters and storytelling, mixing alternate timelines, time travel and more alongside situations no other show can take on. The fourth season will wrap up the story and end the show.

It’s fortunate that similar shows to “Umbrella Academy” exist. Some of these are adapted from comic books and blend elements like superheroes, fantasy, sci-fi, and a quirky style into something quite extraordinary. If you’re seeking an unconventional heroic series, streaming platforms provide numerous options. These fifteen shows are perfect for Umbrella Academy enthusiasts to explore!

Doom Patrol

As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve always found the DC Comics universe to be unique and quirky, so it comes as no surprise that the HBO adaptation maintains that eccentric charm. The main ensemble, or rather, the Titular Patrol, is an oddball bunch indeed. We’ve got a man with his brain in a robot (Brendan Fraser), a guy wrapped up like a mummy who hosts a malevolent spirit (Matt Bomer), a versatile actress who can morph into different forms (April Bowlby), and a woman whose various personalities each possess a unique superpower (Diane Guerrero). And things only get stranger from there.

Summarizing this series can be quite challenging due to its unique blend of elements. It features a chattering gorilla, a sentient jar-housed brain, enigmatic mutants, characters drawn from films, musical numbers, and much more. The actors deliver their roles with enthusiasm, with Fraser particularly shining and recalling why he won an Oscar. Even if you’re unsure about the plot, this series is worth watching on Max. In simpler terms, Doom Patrol offers a wild, entertaining ride that you don’t want to miss!

Dead Boy Detectives

Transforming a storyline from Vertigo comics, this entertaining spin-off delves into the intriguing world of mystery. In this setting, we encounter two spirits, George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri, who run an agency specializing in supernatural crime-solving with their unique spectral abilities. As events unfold, they team up with a character suffering from memory loss (Kassius Nelson), who happens to possess psychic talents. The narrative takes an unexpected turn when a secretive group begins pursuing them, adding layers of suspense and horror to the series. The show masterfully blends these elements for a gripping television experience.

1) The interaction between the leads is fantastic, filled with delightful romances and a touch of sparkle. The climax brings a massive twist concerning one character, setting up events for another season, making it an exceptional pick for fans of Umbrella. Dead Boy Detectives can now be found streaming on Netflix.

The Magicians

In this captivating television series on Syfy, although it delves into magic, it also incorporates enough science fiction aspects to attract viewers. The narrative follows a young man’s journey as he uncovers a collection of magical books that mirror reality, leading him to attend a school of magic. Essentially, envision a version of Harry Potter with more mature characters and a willingness to engage in some outlandish escapades. The ensemble cast is delightful and improves over the course of the series, while the storylines and bizarre circumstances become increasingly intense.

In this rephrased version, the text conveys that The Magicians offers a variety of alternate realities, a captivating fantasy world, talking animals, spirits, and humor in its dialogue. Its five-season run is enchanting and perfect for fans of Umbrella. You can stream The Magicians on Netflix.

Sense8

Unleash the minds behind “The Matrix” onto television, and you’re in for an exhilarating journey. This Netflix show revolves around a diverse group of individuals globally, who mysteriously find themselves connected on a profound level. They possess a unique telepathic bond that allows them to not only communicate but also swap their physical locations. As they band together, they must uncover a perplexing conspiracy targeting them, promising a rollercoaster of unexpected twists and turns.

As someone who grew up watching television shows that rarely dared to tackle complex cultural and racial themes head-on, I was pleasantly surprised by the boldness of Sense8, a Netflix original series. The show seamlessly integrates these important topics amidst its action-packed scenes, making it a refreshing change from the usual formulaic TV shows. At times, it can be challenging to follow the intricate plotlines, but this added difficulty only serves to heighten my interest and appreciation for the show as a unique piece of television that stands out from the crowd. Overall, I highly recommend Sense8 as a thought-provoking and engaging binge-worthy series.

Misfits

In this popular British show, the plot is established right away. Five troubled teenagers find themselves endowed with extraordinary abilities after being caught in a storm – from reading minds to inducing hysteria. Instead of choosing to use these powers for good, they decide to exploit them personally, leading them into conflict with a mysterious cult.

In “Misfits,” streaming now on Peacock, the series offers an engaging watch as it deviates from typical good-versus-evil narratives by portraying characters who misuse their powers for personal gain. The show is characterized by unexpected plot twists and a remarkable balance between power usage, character development, and realism. Over its five-season span, the storylines are skillfully concluded, providing insight into the consequences of unchecked power and accountability.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow

Without a doubt, among the unforgettable shows that graced the Arrowverse, none quite matched the sheer insanity and charm of “Legends of Tomorrow.” Initially, it was about Rip Hunter gathering an eclectic group of heroes to thwart the menacing Vandal Savage. However, as the story unfolded, it morphed into a delightful rollercoaster ride. Which other series combines epic battles against evil with bursts of song and dance, features Helen of Troy as an Amazon, Vikings worshiping a colossal, chatty teddy bear deity? That’s the unique charm of “Legends of Tomorrow”!

The blend of history and this series, featuring an exceptional ensemble cast with Caity Lotz shining as Captain Sara Lance, is nothing short of exhilarating. Comic book enthusiasts will delight in the array of characters that appear, while those not versed in comics can still appreciate the witty dialogue and endearing humor. It’s unfortunate that it was abruptly ended on a cliffhanger, as this show truly stands out in the realm of entertainment. DC’s Legends of Tomorrow is certainly worth checking out!

Runaways

During its three-season run, this Marvel comic adaptation didn’t create a significant impact. It’s unfortunate because it maintained the engaging premise of six teenagers uncovering that their parents were actually supervillains planning an alien invasion. These teens also discovered their unique powers, such as one character being a witch and another being half-alien, while embarking on some exciting escapades.

The series cleverly presented parents with opportunities to reveal their imperfections instead of just portraying them as purely wicked, and the intergenerational conflicts were handled skillfully. A fantastic touch in the final season was Elizabeth Hurley’s portrayal of Morgan LeFay, a powerful sorceress who served as a formidable enemy for the group to confront. This show is among Marvel’s finest productions, offering an enjoyable viewing experience. Currently streaming on CWTV, Runaways.

Legion

As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of comic book adaptations, I must say that FX’s “Legion” stands out as a unique and captivating series. While it shares the same title and some characters with the X-Men, it is a completely different beast. The central character, David Haller (played brilliantly by Dan Stevens), is the son of Charles Xavier, but his powers have left him in a state of schizophrenic chaos. In trying to control these abilities, he must also face the evil Shadow King who seeks to conquer the world. As someone who has struggled with mental illness myself, I found the portrayal of David’s experiences to be incredibly moving and relatable, making “Legion” a series that is not only entertaining but also thought-provoking and emotionally resonant.

In this show, Aubrey Plaza delivers an intriguing performance as a character whose role is pivotal yet surprising. She fully embraces the strange and quirky aspects of her character, which perfectly mirrors the unpredictable nature of the series. Filmed in unusual ways and with scenes that can be confusing at times, it’s a ride worth taking. Despite its connections to X-Men, it offers an engaging storyline that appeals to both fans and non-fans alike. Catch Legion on Hulu.

The Gifted

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve found myself deeply engrossed in the Fox series that seamlessly weaves itself into the intricate tapestry of the X-Men comics. It not only introduces some captivating characters from the source material but also grapples with the same themes of discrimination and prejudice, making it all the more relatable and engaging.

The show “The Gifted” on CWTV employs impressive special effects to support its narrative about a family fleeing from both the government and a Brotherhood determined to secure mutant rights, no matter the cost. Similar to many Fox sci-fi series, it didn’t have a long run; however, X-Men enthusiasts or those who appreciate young characters with powers can find enjoyment in this series.

Travelers

As a dedicated fan of time-travel narratives, I find myself intrigued by this Canadian series that bears similarities to “Quantum Leap.” Having spent years immersed in stories about altering the past to improve the future, I can’t help but be captivated by the unique premise it presents.

Eric McCormack shines as the main character, as the series raises the ante on how the team must alter the future, and it’s entertaining watching them attempt to mimic their hosts in their respective lives. The ensemble cast contributes to one of the top science fiction shows of the past decade that deserves recognition. You can watch Travelers on Netflix.

Lockwood & Co

15 shows to stream if you like The Umbrella Academy

It’s a shame Netflix cancels some fun shows after one season, yet kudos to them trying to give them a shot in the first place. This is a good example, set in an alternate world where an uprising of ghosts shook humanity. So we have a 2023 with the Internet, cell phones and computers barely existing and agencies try to exterminate ghosts. After she’s wrongly fired from one such agency, a young woman joins an independent group run by Anthony Lockwood (Cameron Chapman) for a new life.

In eight thrilling episodes, Lockwood & Co. playfully explores an unusual world filled with chilling supernatural events. The ghosts are downright terrifying, but the leads engage in witty banter that lightens the mood, particularly with their arrogant boss and his earnest assistants. Unfortunately, it ran for only one season, yet it remains a must-watch due to its untapped potential. You can catch Lockwood & Co. on Netflix now.

Renegade Nell

Disney+ has canceled another series after one year, just like Netflix. Unfortunately, this one was quite enjoyable, blending historical drama with fantasy elements. The main character, played by Louisa Harland, is an 18th-century British soldier wrongly accused of murder and forced to become a highwaywoman in order to clear her name. It’s a shame to see it go.

In an unexpected turn of events, a sprite occasionally takes over Nell’s body, granting her extraordinary power. As a result, she not only defends her sisters but also demolishes thugs in the process, all while uncovering a conspiracy to dethrone England. Despite Harland’s captivating wit, humor, and lively spirit, his show has come to an end prematurely. However, you can enjoy this entertaining series by binge-watching it. The series, titled Renegade Nell , is now available on Disney+.

Locke & Key

15 shows to stream if you like The Umbrella Academy

As a longtime fan of comic book adaptations, I must say that while this new Netflix series may not have garnered the same level of attention as Stranger Things, it certainly holds its own. Having grown up reading countless comics and watching various superhero shows, I can appreciate the creative ingenuity that goes into crafting a world where children discover special abilities through a set of mysterious keys in a peculiar house. The blend of fantasy and horror is expertly executed, providing an engaging and suspenseful viewing experience that keeps me on the edge of my seat. If you’re looking for a fresh take on the genre, I highly recommend giving this show a try.

In this series, it skillfully explores the ages of its characters (as they turn 18, they lose their ability to see magic), while also presenting a more significant danger. However, what truly captivates viewers is the intricate family relationships. Unlike many Netflix shows, it effectively concludes its storyline and offers a pace that makes it an ideal choice for viewing right after Umbrella. You can find Locke & Key streaming on Netflix. Shadowhunters

Following its struggles as a movie series, The Mortal Instruments found a new opportunity to shine on the Freeform television show. Katherine McNamara delivered an outstanding performance as Clary Fray, a teen who accidentally uncovers a hidden world of warriors and demons. She learns she’s been connected to this realm all along and decides to take part in the battle.

As a long-time fan of young adult fantasy novels, I must say that “Shadowhunters” is a series that truly stands out from the crowd. Having devoured the books upon their release, I was initially skeptical about how well they would translate to the small screen. However, the creators of this show have masterfully utilized the supernatural setting and woven a captivating love triangle between Clary and her two male counterparts – one being a hunter and the other transforming into a vampire later on.

Wynonna Earp

Prepare for the exciting upcoming movie reunion by watching this exceptional Canadian supernatural Western series. The show features Melanie Scrofano as Wynonna, a descendant of Wyatt Earp, a legendary lawman. She is tasked with safeguarding her town of Purgatory from demons using a unique pistol. The series boasts excellent writing and an outstanding cast, including Dominique Provost-Chalkley portraying Wynonna’s sister, Waverly, Katherine Barrell as her girlfriend, Nicole, and Tim Rozon playing the role of an immortal Doc Holiday.

The wit of this show is exceptional, blending mature scenarios, delightful dialogue, and absurdly entertaining segments. It gained an enormous fanbase during its four-season run, and the upcoming film promises to carry on this trend. If you haven’t seen it yet, prepare for an enjoyable journey. You can catch Wynonna Earp streaming on Netflix.

The Umbrella Academy is now streaming on Netflix.
