15 best period dramas to watch right now

As someone who’s spent countless hours immersed in the world of period dramas, I must say that the current offerings on various streaming platforms are nothing short of a delight.

When considering period dramas, it’s likely that images of quaintly outdated language, tightly laced corsets hidden beneath mountains of opulent ball gown material, and for fans of Downton Abbey, the phrase “Mr Pamuk!” delivered in Lady Mary’s haughty, offended tone, come to mind.

But there’s so much more to these gems than just romance, drama and high-society affairs.

We’ll examine top-tier period dramas, focusing on their authentic portrayal of specific historic eras. These productions, whether film or TV, are distinguished by their accurate costumes, sets, and props reminiscent or typical of the time. According to Oxford Languages, this is the essence of the genre.

We’ll of course be including sweeping love stories that would make even the stoniest-hearted person swoon, but you can also expect some unusual entries that are full of drama and suspense.

In other words, although we’re not venturing into magical, historical series such as the recently terminated “Renegade Nell”, our current approach is to concentrate on tales that are grounded in real-life experiences.

The shows we recommend (which you can stream right now on top platforms) will hold your attention just as effectively as the intrigue between Pen and Colin in the third season of “Bridgerton.” If we accidentally mentioned Cressida and Eloise, we actually meant Pen and Colin.

Bridgerton

In our selection, “Bridgerton” stands out as a bold and captivating period production. It pushes boundaries in numerous aspects, including its open portrayal and emphasis on female enjoyment, its authentic representation of diverse races, and its recent endeavors to expand diversity through the development of a potential significant queer relationship and the inclusion of characters with disabilities. At its core, however, lies a compelling narrative, filled with steamy scandals and passionate pairings.

Year after year, a fresh wave of potential romantic tales unfolds with each changing season, leaving us guessing whether they’ll become something more. Remarkably, every new couple brings an exciting sense of novelty, as if we’re witnessing the first love story all over again. The series also skillfully addresses the evolving role of women in society, making it both entertaining and thought-provoking.

Bridgeton doesn’t just tick all the boxes, it creates new ones and we love it.

The Crown

Although the final season of “The Crown” might not have lived up to its initial quality (placing at the bottom of our best-to-worst ranking), it remained an enthralling and captivating dramatic work throughout its run, particularly during its peak period.

As a devoted fan, I must say that the series never seemed to stick with one cast for long, constantly introducing fresh faces to embody the main characters throughout its seasons. This might appear disconcerting at first glance, but it was far from it. Instead, this continuous reinvention kept the show feeling fresh and exciting, leaving fans on the edge of their seats, eagerly anticipating each new interpretation of these iconic roles. In a way, it allowed the Netflix period drama to maintain its youthful charm and appeal.

Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar

Discussing shocking scandals, Netflix’s Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar abounds with surprising scenes. In the 1940s, the main courtesan of Heeramandi Mallikajaan finds herself embroiled in a bitter rivalry with her niece Fareedan, resulting in a storyline filled with intrigue, drama, and deceit.

The animosity is softened by a pure and innocent love story but more tension is never too far with India’s fight for independence from the British bubbling in the background. There may not be ball gowns and balls as such, but the costumes are incredibly rich and the mujras (dance performances) sublime.

Call the Midwife

Although navigating through a birth canal might not be everyone’s preferred choice for a period drama, “Call the Midwife” stands out as one of the best. This show chronicles the work of the Nonnatus nuns and nurses, who consistently bring new life into the world, but it offers much more than just that. The series is daring in its narrative, skillfully addressing social issues from the past that resonate strongly with today’s society.

Call the Midwife is deeply grounded in various forms of love. Of course, it delves into romantic love, presenting its fair share of emotional upheavals and sweet, swooning romances. Yet, it also emphasizes familial love, communal bonds, and a profound affection for humanity.”

As a devoted viewer, this BBC period drama leaves me utterly moved, only to uplift me moments later with its unyielding optimism for a brighter tomorrow. Truly, it’s a precious gem that I eagerly look forward to watching.

Downton Abbey

It’s truly worthwhile to watch Downton Abbey, particularly for Dame Maggie Smith’s sharp-witted remarks as Violet Crawley. However, the Dowager Countess isn’t the only reason to tune in; the Crawley estate is brimming with drama, sorrow, and romance, both among the servants below stairs and the aristocrats above.

love disregards social status and class distinctions, often shattering conventional norms; families struggle to adapt to shifting eras, progressing from 1912 to the vibrant 1920s.

The heart of this series revolves around the intense bond of family, maintaining a lively, amusing atmosphere throughout. Despite exploring heavy themes like discrimination towards LGBTQ+ individuals, sexual assault, mourning, and other significant issues, Downton Abbey consistently maintains an upbeat and cheerful demeanor at its core.

Three Little Birds

It’s deeply unfortunate that the second season of Sir Lenny Henry’s “Three Little Birds” wasn’t commissioned, as his post-Windrush drama was exceptionally unique and worthwhile.

The song “Three Little Birds” narrates the voyage of three youthful females from Jamaica to England, amidst a period marked by intense racial strife. While the song delves into serious topics extensively, there’s an abundance of delight to discover throughout.

Costumes, makeup, and hairdos not just establish the historical era, but also emphasize the distinct traits of every character.

Henry additionally employs significant filmmaking decisions to portray the peaks and valleys, the optimism and despair, all while maintaining a focus on the joy he consistently brings back.

Lessons in Chemistry

In this delightful ’50s tale, I found myself completely captivated by Marvel’s Brie Larson, who embodies the epitome of badassery as Elizabeth Zott, a tenacious female scientist relentlessly pursuing her career aspirations in an era that undermines her due to her gender.

Despite delving into a captivating, emotional romance, the series “Lessons in Chemistry” consistently emphasizes Zott’s determination and resilience as its central theme. In her darkest moments, she remains unbroken, making the show a heartwarming and optimistic viewing experience.

Pachinko

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but marvel at Showrunner Soo Hugh’s delicate yet powerful portrayal of the Baek family saga. Reminiscent of the grace and grandeur of the family itself, this adaptation from Min Jin Lee’s work, Pachinko, weaves a compelling narrative that unfolds over four generations, starting with Sunja’s youth and extending to her adult grandchildren. The story masterfully highlights the challenges they face, intertwining them with the impact of the Japanese occupation and the subsequent discrimination.

Experience the intense burden of anticipation, duty, unmerited embarrassment, and other emotions as you delve into the intricate family saga set against the backdrop of the challenging lives of Korean immigrants in Japan, portrayed in the novel “Pachinko“. Fellow Travelers

In this heartfelt, queer-themed period production, Jonathan Bailey from “Bridgerton” takes center stage as a prominent leading man once more.

In the ’50s, I found myself entwined with Hawkins Fuller (played by Matt Bomer) and Timothy Laughlin (Bailey), a romance that lasted an entire decade. Our connection deepened over time, and our chemistry bloomed like a beautiful flower. The show offers numerous steamy scenes as a result, but it’s not just about romantic escapades from the past. It also shines a light on crucial moments in queer history, making it more than just a love story.

A Small Light

We all know the story of Anne Frank, at least in some form, but A Small Light is not that.

The narrative primarily focuses on Miep, a brave teen Holocaust survivor portrayed by Bel Powley, and her husband Jan (played by Joe Cole), who exhibited equally heroic actions despite potential danger.

“A Small Light” delves into the story of how they assisted persecuted Jewish individuals, simultaneously uncovering the long-term effects this endeavor had on their own relationship.

Powley and Cole keep you riveted with a compelling mix of their sorrow, anticipation, affection, and despair.

A League of Their Own

The acclaimed film “A League of Their Own” undergoes a captivating transformation into a television series, bursting with intensity and emotion. Fueled by their shared love for the game and an undeniable affection for each other, characters Carson Shaw (played by Abbie Jacobson) and Greta Gill (portrayed by D’Arcy Carden) experience feelings that ignite, intensify, and simmer.

As a lifelong sports enthusiast who has always been passionate about equality and representation, I find the show to be incredibly engaging. The unique blend of diverse women coming together to chase their dreams of playing professional baseball is captivating in itself. However, what truly sets this series apart is its thoughtful exploration of themes such as queerness, Blackness, and identity during the 1940s. Growing up, I didn’t see many stories that resonated with my experiences, but this show feels like it was made just for me. It’s a powerful reminder that our history is rich with untold stories of resilience, courage, and self-discovery, and I can’t wait to see where the series goes next.

Unfortunately, it had just a single season, yet do give it a try! It’s still an enjoyable journey.

The Gilded Age

Carrie Coon delivers a stellar performance in Julian Fellowes’ drama reminiscent of Downton Abbey. While Gilded Age hails from the same creator as Downton, it boasts a dramatic style that is excessively glamorous and unapologetically extravagant.

In the year 1882, New York City serves as the backdrop for Bertha Coon spearheading the integration of the Russell family into the elite social circles. However, the reach of newfound wealth has its limits, and the Russells find themselves needing to navigate societal norms in order to gain acceptance from the established old-money crowd.

The Gilded Age is also available to watch on Sky Atlantic.

Crafty and covert maneuvers seem to be at play, yet the series delves beyond social class conflicts to tackle racial disparity, using the character of Peggy Carter as a vehicle. As the seasons unfolds, her experiences broaden, shedding light on these issues.
