As someone who’s spent countless hours immersed in the world of period dramas, I must say that the current offerings on various streaming platforms are nothing short of a delight.
When considering period dramas, it’s likely that images of quaintly outdated language, tightly laced corsets hidden beneath mountains of opulent ball gown material, and for fans of Downton Abbey, the phrase “Mr Pamuk!” delivered in Lady Mary’s haughty, offended tone, come to mind.
But there’s so much more to these gems than just romance, drama and high-society affairs.
We’ll examine top-tier period dramas, focusing on their authentic portrayal of specific historic eras. These productions, whether film or TV, are distinguished by their accurate costumes, sets, and props reminiscent or typical of the time. According to Oxford Languages, this is the essence of the genre.
We’ll of course be including sweeping love stories that would make even the stoniest-hearted person swoon, but you can also expect some unusual entries that are full of drama and suspense.
In other words, although we’re not venturing into magical, historical series such as the recently terminated “Renegade Nell”, our current approach is to concentrate on tales that are grounded in real-life experiences.
The shows we recommend (which you can stream right now on top platforms) will hold your attention just as effectively as the intrigue between Pen and Colin in the third season of “Bridgerton.” If we accidentally mentioned Cressida and Eloise, we actually meant Pen and Colin.

Remarkably, every new couple brings an exciting sense of novelty, as if we’re witnessing the first love story all over again. The series also skillfully addresses the evolving role of women in society, making it both entertaining and thought-provoking.
Bridgeton doesn’t just tick all the boxes, it creates new ones and we love it.

Although the final season of “The Crown” might not have lived up to its initial quality (placing at the bottom of our best-to-worst ranking), it remained an enthralling and captivating dramatic work throughout its run, particularly during its peak period.
As a devoted fan, I must say that the series never seemed to stick with one cast for long, constantly introducing fresh faces to embody the main characters throughout its seasons. This might appear disconcerting at first glance, but it was far from it. Instead, this continuous reinvention kept the show feeling fresh and exciting, leaving fans on the edge of their seats, eagerly anticipating each new interpretation of these iconic roles. In a way, it allowed the Netflix period drama to maintain its youthful charm and appeal.

Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar
Discussing shocking scandals, Netflix’s Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar abounds with surprising scenes. In the 1940s, the main courtesan of Heeramandi Mallikajaan finds herself embroiled in a bitter rivalry with her niece Fareedan, resulting in a storyline filled with intrigue, drama, and deceit.
The animosity is softened by a pure and innocent love story but more tension is never too far with India’s fight for independence from the British bubbling in the background. There may not be ball gowns and balls as such, but the costumes are incredibly rich and the mujras (dance performances) sublime.

Although navigating through a birth canal might not be everyone’s preferred choice for a period drama, “Call the Midwife” stands out as one of the best. This show chronicles the work of the Nonnatus nuns and nurses, who consistently bring new life into the world, but it offers much more than just that. The series is daring in its narrative, skillfully addressing social issues from the past that resonate strongly with today’s society.

It’s a powerful reminder that our history is rich with untold stories of resilience, courage, and self-discovery, and I can’t wait to see where the series goes next.
Unfortunately, it had just a single season, yet do give it a try! It’s still an enjoyable journey.
