Love Hard (2021)
Boasting an outstanding 90% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Love Hard is a Netflix Christmas romantic comedy that we delightfully savor while cozied up under blankets on the couch.
Nina Dobrev, famously known from “Vampire Diaries,” portrays Natalie, a blogger specializing in relationships who shares insights on dating in Los Angeles. Despite her own quest for love, she finds herself single. A friend suggests expanding her search radius, leading Natalie to meet someone online. Intrigued, she decides to catch him off guard by visiting him during the winter holidays in New York City.
Actually, it turns out that the person Josh has been communicating with isn’t the dashing individual depicted in his photos (as portrayed by Darren Barnet in Never Have I Ever), but rather someone more academically inclined, akin to the character played by Jimmy O Yang from Silicon Valley.
Scrooge: A Christmas Carol (2022)
As a passionate admirer, let me share an exciting twist on a timeless tale: I’ve always known the story of “A Christmas Carol,” but never have I encountered it in such a unique way as this! The classic work by Charles Dickens is brought to life through enchanting animation in a fresh musical adaptation that harkens back to the 1970 film of the same name.
This version might not perfectly capture Dickens’ original work, but it offers a unique perspective by incorporating songs from two-time Academy Award winner Leslie Bricusse, along with the talented voices of performers like Luke Evans, Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley, Jonathan Pryce, Johnny Flynn and others.
Scrooge encounters a grouchy, self-centered individual who’s compelled to confront spirits from his past, present, and future on Christmas night.
The Noel Diary (2022)
In a delightful holiday romantic comedy, “This Is Us” actor Justin Hartley shines, emanating festive warmth even as it adheres to typical genre conventions.
The narrative revolves around Jacob, an attractive and well-known author, who receives news of his mother’s passing from a lawyer’s phone call. Upon visiting his mother’s home to settle her estate, he encounters Rachel, who is searching for her biological mother – previously Jacob’s nanny. She believes he might be able to assist her in this quest, and as they work together, they develop a close relationship… romantically.
Exploring personal growth and past hurts, “The Noel Diary” invites us to appreciate life with its delightful holiday-themed romance.
The Holiday (2006)
While it may not have garnered positive reviews from critics, that’s quite common for many Christmas movies. Just like other traditional holiday films, “The Holiday” has grown to be a beloved choice among viewers who have been captivated by its appeal.
Directed and penned by Nancy Meyers, this film tells a story where Amanda (Cameron Diaz) and Iris (Kate Winslet) exchange houses during Christmas after experiencing heartbreaks. Interestingly, they both find themselves attracted to two men – Graham (Jude Law) and Miles (Jack Black).
Sure, The Holiday doesn’t win anything for originality, but you’ll be won over all the same.
The Grinch (2018)
There’s no Christmas without The Grinch, one of the most famous characters of the season.
The enchanting animated film from 2018 represents the third screen adaptation of Dr. Seuss’s “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!“, preceded by the well-known live-action film featuring Jim Carrey, released in the 2000s and available on Netflix.
The tale centers around a grumbly green character named The Grinch, who becomes increasingly irritated by the boisterous and joyful Christmas festivities in the town of Whoville. In an attempt to restore tranquility, he enlists the help of his canine companion to spoil the holiday spirit.
Falling for Christmas (2022)
Watching “Falling for Christmas” once more has us head-over-heels smitten with Lindsay Lohan again. This Netflix holiday film delivers the perfect mix of silliness and romance, just how we like it!
In a different setting, the character Sierra, a wealthy hotel heiress, suffers an accident while skiing and loses her memory. Fortunately for her, she encounters Jake, a modest and attractive lodge owner, who not only assists in restoring her memory but also challenges her long-held convictions. This role is portrayed by Chord Overstreet from the popular series ‘Glee’.
If you’re looking for more Lindsay Lohan, don’t forget to catch her in her latest Christmas film titled “Our Little Secret” as well, making it a fun double feature!
Klaus (2019)
Klaus is undeniably the finest Netflix Original Christmas film, and we’d rather stand firm on this snow-capped peak than waver. This movie offers a unique twist on the Santa Claus story, portraying him as a self-indulgent postman who develops a friendship with a secluded toy maker living on a remote island.
Boasting a generous helping of whimsical, eerie humor reminiscent of “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” coupled with stunning 2D animation, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to claim that “Klaus” is arguably one of the finest Christmas films of this millennium.
A Castle for Christmas (2021)
In the heartwarming Christmas romantic comedy “A Castle for Christmas,” the renowned actors Brooke Shields and Cary Elwes from “Stranger Things” play an unexpected pair of lovers. This movie, just as sweetly cheesy as any Netflix holiday rom-com, is beautifully set amidst the picturesque Scottish highlands.
Sophie Brown, a renowned author, finds herself embroiled in a scandal and yearns for escape. She decides to retreat to Scotland to rediscover her family heritage, which unexpectedly ignites her desire to acquire a castle. However, the castle’s current owner is a gruff yet appealing Scotsman who’s reluctant to part with it.
How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)
In a simpler, more conversational tone: “The timeless Christmas film from the early 2000s, ‘How The Grinch Stole Christmas,’ is an excellent choice for a nostalgic holiday viewing. This movie brings to life Dr. Seuss’s classic 1957 book with Jim Carrey giving his signature over-the-top and humorous performance, and showcasing some extraordinary green hairstyles as the Grinch learns about the true spirit of Christmas.
Under the guidance of director Ron Howard, this film narrates the story of The Grinch, who grows increasingly irritable due to the boisterous Christmas revelries in Whoville that echo through his isolated abode. In a bid to spoil their joy, The Grinch takes action, but there may be a young girl named Cindy Lou with the potential to alter his outlook on life.
Shaun the Sheep: The Flight Before Christmas (2021)
As a devoted admirer, I find myself filled with joyous anticipation at the onset of each new season for Shaun and his Flock. However, my elation soon turns to despair when an unexpected farmhouse raid aimed at procuring larger stockings for the flock inadvertently results in the disappearance of Timmy.
Enjoy this timeless favorite, Shaun the Sheep, which runs for just 30 minutes. This means that even after indulging in an eggnog-induced slumber, you won’t miss any of the action!
Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey (2020)
The 2020 Netflix original Christmas film, “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey,” offers not only a delightful holiday viewing experience but also marks a significant stride towards enhancing diversity and inclusion in Christmas-themed productions.
This story follows a once-great inventor who finds himself in hard times, but through the spirit of his energetic granddaughter, he rediscovers the magic within himself. It’s an engaging and swift-moving Christmas musical that you’ll want to watch again and again.
A Christmas Prince (2017)
In the year 2017, the movie titled “A Christmas Prince” turned out to be an unexpected sensation, with many viewers enjoying it immensely, causing them to watch it no less than 18 consecutive days.
For centuries, a captivating story revolves around a journalist disguising themselves to uncover secrets about a prince, but in an unexpected turn of events, they end up falling for him. This tale was so beloved that it led to two sequels, titled “The Royal Wedding” and “The Royal Baby“. Thus, fans can immerse themselves in the complete trilogy.
The Princess Switch trilogy (2018-2021)
Netflix appears to have a knack for selecting successful original Christmas productions. If “A Christmas Prince” doesn’t appeal to you, then perhaps “The Princess Switch,” starring Vanessa Hudgens in a double role, might strike your fancy.
This comedy follows the familiar, delightful pattern of “The Prince and the Pauper,” where a princess switches identities with a commoner who looks just like her. The sequel, “Switched Again,” continues the fun, while the third installment, “Romancing the Star,” offers a blend of Christmas romance and a heist for an all-in-one entertaining experience. What else could you desire?
The Christmas Chronicles (2018)
frankly, it’s quite astonishing that it took so long for Kurt Russell to be cast as Santa, yet we’re delighted that the movie “The Christmas Chronicles” was the one to make it happen at last.
This film swiftly earns a spot among the most charming portrayals of Santa, as it unfolds a familiar holiday narrative (children working together to save Christmas). However, it doesn’t shy away from being delightfully cheesy, just like its sequel, which is also ready for viewing at your convenience.
Single All the Way (2021)
Among the Netflix Christmas films released in 2021, “Single All The Way,” a film we rated four stars, offers a two-hour journey filled with complex love triangles, emotional family therapy sessions, and characters who seem blissfully unaware of their own situations – all while providing numerous moments that will have you laughing out loud.
As a gamer, I’ve got to say, there were a few awkward scenes (just like in any festive flick), but hey, who doesn’t love a movie that puts a heartwarming queer romance front and center?
