So far in 2024, there have been several outstanding shows that could potentially be among the best of the year. We’re still in the middle of the year, though.
Every autumn typically provides an abundant array of premieres, with both BBC and ITV introducing fresh dramas – and this is just a sneak peek into the shows that are yet to be unveiled on popular streaming platforms like Netflix and Disney+ in the UK.
As a long-time TV enthusiast and someone who has spent countless hours in front of the screen, I can confidently say that the upcoming series lineup for autumn is nothing short of exciting. From September through to November, these new shows promise to keep me entertained, engaged, and eagerly awaiting each new episode.
So bookmark this page, and set your calendars and watch lists accordingly.
Ludwig
Coming to BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the autumn.
Actors Anna Maxwell Martin (“Line of Duty,” “Motherland”) and David Mitchell (“Peep Show”) take on leading roles in an upcoming comedy-drama series, airing soon on the BBC, which features a new case each week.
When John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor’s twin brother James mysteriously vanishes, reclusive puzzle-solver Taylor embarks on a mission to find him by posing as James and delving into his life – an intriguing twist is that James is none other than a highly esteemed Detective Chief Inspector.
Notable appearances are made by Dipo Ola from the series “Landscapers”, Paul Chahidi known for his role in “This Country”, Allan Mustafa, a star from “People Just Do Nothing”, and Rose Ayling-Ellis.
Joan
Coming to ITV1 and ITVX in September.
Starring Sophie Turner as the lead character, this six-part drama unfolds in the 1980s. Turner, known for her role in “Game of Thrones,” has expressed her enthusiasm about portraying the character of “Joan” on screen.
“Turner described his character as one of London’s most infamous figures in the criminal underworld, known as ‘The Godmother.’ This woman navigates her successful and audacious career as a jewel thief, simultaneously battling to reclaim her daughter from social services. We witness a desperate mother entangled in the captivating realm of crime.”
Mr Loverman
Coming later this year to BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
Lennie James, known for his roles in “Line of Duty” and “Save Me,” takes center stage in the BBC’s screen version of Bernardine Evaristo’s book.
The narrative unfolds around Barrington ‘Barry’ Jedidiah Walker, a 74-year-old gentleman from Hackney, who is known for his charm among ladies. His wife, after 50 years of marriage, harbors suspicions that he may have been unfaithful to her with multiple women.
In fact, Barry has been in a passionate relationship with his dearest companion and kindred spirit, Morris. The novel, Mr Loverman, delves into the repercussions of this hidden romance on everyone involved, while focusing on an intimate, mature, and racially diverse narrative centered around queer love.
Return to Paradise
Coming to BBC One and BBC iPlayer in autumn.
In this brand-new spin-off series, the world of “Death in Paradise” is broadening its horizons, venturing not only across the Caribbean and Devon but also making its way to Australia.
For the first time ever, a woman takes the helm of the BBC detective series, with “Home and Away” actress Anna Samson stepping into the role as DI Mackenzie Clarke. Additionally, another cast member from “Home and Away”, Tai Hara, has joined the show, portraying Mackenzie’s former fiancé Glenn, setting the stage for some romantic entanglements reminiscent of a classic “DiP” storyline.
Ted Lasso actor Lloyd Griffith also joins the Return to Paradise cast.
Nightsleeper
Coming soon to BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
In the upcoming BBC suspense thriller, the stars are Alexandra Roach, known for “The Light in the Hall,” and Joe Cole, recognized for his work in “Gangs of London.” This gripping tale takes place aboard a nighttime train journey from Glasgow to London.
In an unexpected alliance, a police officer not on duty and a high-ranking official from the United Kingdom’s National Cyber Security Center find themselves as unlikely partners. Having never crossed paths before, they now find themselves in a race against time to protect the passengers after uncovering a cyber attack targeting the UK’s railway system.
Rivals
Coming soon to Disney+.
Discuss the star-studded lineup of “Rivals”! This captivating series features David Tennant, Aidan Turner, Emily Atack, Luke Pasqualino, Danny Dyer, and Lisa McGrillis, among others.
The eight-episode show is based on a popular novel penned by author Jilly Cooper. It unfolds in the high society of the 1980s and explores the fierce competition between two influential figures in the ruthless realm of television.
Previously, Cooper expressed his delight in revealing the stellar cast for the show Rivals. This exceptional team, drawn from the rich pool of British acting talent, exceeds any hopes I had for an ensemble. I’m eagerly anticipating being on set and witnessing them breathe life into the characters that hold a special place in my heart.
Sweetpea
Coming to Sky and NOW in October.
Actress Ella Purnell, known for her roles in ‘Yellowjackets’ and ‘Fallout’, headlines the television version of the critically acclaimed novel by CJ Skuse. This series is often referred to as a “teenage anger awakening” drama.
In the role of Executive Producer alongside her performance, Purnell portrays Rhiannon Lewis, a character who initially seems timid but transforms into an individual fueled by vengeance and discovering a thrilling, emancipating passion for homicide.
As a devoted admirer, I’d say that at the heart of this captivating series lies a narrative where a woman discovers her power to speak up, presented in an exceptional blend of somber tones and humor.
Curfew
Coming to Paramount+ UK this autumn.
Another book-to-screen adaptation, Curfew is based on Jayne Cowie’s novel After Dark.
In a fictional world where a Women’s Safety Act exists, men are subject to a stringent nighttime curfew and monitored via ankle tags. However, when a woman’s body, gruesomely slain, is found, seasoned police officer Pamela Green is tasked with the investigation, causing the system and its effectiveness in ensuring women’s security to be scrutinized.
In this suspenseful drama set in London, you’ll find an engaging ensemble featuring actress Sarah Parish from the series “Stay Close”, Mandip Gill known for her role in “Doctor Who”, and Bobby Brazier hailing from “EastEnders”.
Generation Z
Coming to Channel 4 this autumn.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the talented director Ben Wheatley, known for his gripping works like “Kill List” and, yes, even “Meg 2: The Trench,” is set to unleash a zombie-filled horror-comedy on Channel 4 this year. Can’t wait to see it unfold!
Nestled in the fictional town of Dambury lies a seemingly ordinary, dull, and often overlooked place. With limited activities and a gloomy atmosphere, it’s hard to imagine anything extraordinary happening there. But that’s exactly where the apocalypse begins, as hinted by the intriguing synopsis from the Generation Z.
The ensemble features popular actors such as Sue Johnston from “The Royle Family”, Robert Lindsay known for “My Family”, comedian Johnny Vegas, Buket Komur starring in “Our House”, and Lewis Gribben famous for “Masters of the Air”.
Brassic
Coming to Sky and NOW in September.
Get ready for the highly anticipated comeback of the beloved Northern comedy series by Danny Brocklehurst, which will bring back its co-creator and leading actor Joe Gilgun along with Michelle Keegan once more.
Absolutely, it’s expected that the MacDonaghs will stir up more chaos in season six, as rumors suggest that this season will feature “crocodiles with an appetite for humans” and a “naked cult.”
The Perfect Couple
Coming to Netflix on September 5.
Nicole Kidman and The Undoing boss Susanne Bier reunite for this sun-soaked murder mystery.
In the novel with the same title by Elin Hilderbrand, several attendees of a wedding become suspects after a corpse is discovered just before the nuptials taking place at one of Nantucket’s most affluent families’ estate.
Heartstopper
Coming to Netflix on October 3.
You won’t need to wait too much longer before Nick and Charlie, Elle and Tao, as well as Darcy and Tara and their group, return.
In the upcoming third season of the popular young adult series on Netflix, there are hints that it will delve deeper and address more complex topics as the characters grow up, dealing with darker issues along the way.
Additionally, it is worth noting that the popular actor Jonathan Bailey, best known for his role in Bridgerton, is set to make a memorable appearance. His character, Jack Maddox, is fondly remembered by fans and interestingly portrayed as “Charlie’s Instagram-renowned infatuation”.
Agatha All Along
Coming to Disney+ on September 18.
Ever since “It was Agatha all along” stuck in my head from Marvel’s WandaVision, I’ve been eagerly waiting for more of Kathryn Hahn’s captivating portrayal of Agatha Harkness. Now, it seems that the time has come to share this enchanting spin-off with the world!
Actor Joe Locke becomes part of the cast and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He assures fans that the show will cater to LGBTQ+ audiences, hinting at a more exaggerated or humorously flamboyant style by saying, “expect some fun, over-the-top moments.”
