13 Marvel actors who have played more than one role in the MCU

As a die-hard Marvel fan who has witnessed the incredible journey of these talented actors, I must say their roles within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) have been nothing short of extraordinary!

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Robert Downey Jr., who was previously known for portraying Tony Stark, is returning to the franchise but will no longer be playing that character. Instead, he’ll join the MCU as a new character this time around, and he’ll be stepping into the role of the infamous villain, Doctor Doom.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got to say, the news about this character returning to the MCU has stirred up quite a conversation among fans. Truth be told, he’s already left an indelible impression on the universe. However, it seems he’s not the only one making a comeback, but this time as a new character. Believe it or not, there have been 13 others who have done the same before him, and some of their choices might just blow your mind.

Chris Evans as Johnny Storm and Captain America

Among all contenders, Chris Evans stands out noticeably, particularly due to his roles as Deadpool and Wolverine. He initially joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) by portraying Johnny Storm, also known as The Human Torch, in the initial series of Fantastic Four films when the MCU first began taking flight.

He would go on to play the iconic Steve Rogers, aka Captain America. Of course, fans remember him more as Captain America, but Johnny will not be forgotten.

Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva and Sersi

In the movie “Captain Marvel”, we were introduced to Minn-Erva, portrayed by Gemma Chan. She’s hard to forget, especially with her distinctive blue facial makeup, which might have caught your attention slightly.

In the very same year that Chane portrayed Minn-Erva, she joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe through a different film. Specifically, she took on the role of Sersi in “Eternals.”

Enver Gjokaj as Young Cop and Daniel Sousa

Some actors who’ve played multiple roles may have started with minor, often unnamed parts earlier in their careers. For instance, Enver Gjokaj, famed among fans of NCIS: Hawaii, previously appeared as “Young Cop” in the initial Avengers film. Interestingly, that character wasn’t even given a name!

Later on, he appeared in both “Agent Carter” and “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”, portraying the character Daniel Sousa, a former World War II soldier who transitioned into a strategic agent for S.H.I.E.L.D. in these series.

Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange and Dormammu

Occasionally, a performer takes on multiple characters within the same film, which isn’t common but Benedict Cumberbatch has accomplished this feat. We’re all familiar with him as Doctor Strange from the Doctor Strange movies and their sequels, and more recently in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Interestingly, he’s also lent his voice to the character in animated productions.

In the movie “Doctor Strange,” he assumed a dual role. Notably, he voiced the malevolent leader of the Dark Dimension, Dormammu. Indeed, he portrayed his own adversary in this film.

Kenneth Choi as Jim Morita and Principal Morita

Unlike several actors who’ve played diverse, unrelated roles, Kenneth Choi, fondly recognized by 911 viewers as Chimney, has portrayed two characters sharing the last name Morita. Interestingly, these roles are not standalone; there is a connection between them.

In “Captain America: The First Avenger,” Choi portrayed Jim Morita, a member of the Howling Commandos. Later, in “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” he took on the role of Principal Morita, who turned out to be the grandson of his initial character.

Laura Haddock as Autograph Seeker and Meredith Quill

Several fans have proposed theories linking various characters, and Laura Haddock has undoubtedly contributed to these speculations. Initially portraying a woman seeking Steve Roger’s autograph in the 1940s in “Captain America: The First Avenger“, her role may hint at potential connections within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Later on, she made an appearance in “Guardians of the Galaxy,” taking on the role of Peter Quill’s mother, Meredith. This franchise performance has sparked discussion about whether Cap could be Peter’s grandfather. However, James Gunn clarified that this fan theory isn’t accurate, but it’s fun to entertain the idea.

Mahershala Ali as Cottonmouth and Blade

Playing a villain is fun, and Mahershala Ali certainly did it well. He took on the role of Cottonmouth in Luke Cage.

Initially, he was set to lend his voice for the character Blade in a bonus scene of “Eternals”. The intention was to introduce him into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Blade, but unfortunately, this plan hasn’t been successful so far. As Wesley Snipes stated in “Deadpool & Wolverine”, there can only be one Blade, and that’s not a slight against Ali!

Josh Brolin as Cable and Thanos

It’s widely recognized that Josh Brolin portrays the infamous villain, Thanos, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although he wasn’t the first to play this character within the series, it’s primarily his interpretation of Thanos that is most familiar to fans.

Following my epic portrayal of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War back in 2018, I found myself diving into another Marvel adventure. This time, it was all about a man with the power to travel through time, determined to eliminate me – Cable – to save his family. That’s right, I stepped onto the set of Deadpool 2.

13 Marvel actors who have played more than one role in the MCU

Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger and Johnny Storm

It’s important to note that Chris Evans isn’t the sole actor who portrayed Johnny Storm. In fact, in the 2015 reboot of “Fantastic Four”, Michael B. Jordan took on the role of The Human Torch.

Three short years after joining the Marvel Universe, I found myself stepping into a new role – this time as the menacing antagonist. I took on the character of Killmonger in Black Panther, and my portrayal left such an indelible mark that fans can’t help but hope for his return in some form.

Damion Poitier as Thanos and Lagos

Fun fact: You might recall that I mentioned Brolin wasn’t the initial Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? This is because Damion Poitier assumed the role in the post-credit scene of The Avengers. However, starting with Guardians of the Galaxy, it was Brolin who took over the character, and the vibrant purple appearance was toned down a bit.

In fact, Poitier had more than one foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He made an appearance in “Captain America: Civil War,” portraying Lagos, a mercenary working alongside Crossbones.

Michelle Yeoh as Aleta Ogord and Ying Nan

Michelle Yeoh’s tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is hard to disregard. She made her debut in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” where she portrayed Aleta Ogord, one of the Ravagers. Given that her role was relatively minor, it’s understandable if some might overlook it.

The character you’re likely to remember is Ying Nan, as she played a pivotal role in “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.” In this film, she was revealed to be Shang-Chi’s aunt and one of the protectors of the Ta Lo dimension. Her responsibilities included shielding the Marvel Cinematic Universe from the Dweller in Darkness.

Alfre Woodard as Mariah Dillard and Miriam Sharpe

We return to the series Luke Cage, where we find another actor taking on multiple roles. Alfre Woodard portrayed Mariah Dillard, a relative of Cottonmouth. Later in the story, Mariah assumes control of Harlem’s Paradise after Cottonmouth’s demise, acting as its owner.

In 2016, she secured the part of Miriam Sharpe in the film titled “Captain Marvel: Civil War“. This role had modest dimensions as it involved a woman who conversed with Tony Stark concerning her son’s demise in Sokovia, which was attributed to his weaponry.

Olivia Munn as Chess Roberts and Psylocke

The last on our list is Olivia Munn, who started off her journey in the MCU in Iron Man 2 as Chess Roberts. She was a reporter covering the Stark Expo.

Next up, you should make your way to the film “X-Men: Apocalypse.” Although they’re produced by different studios, we often group these X-Men movies together as part of the same universe. Some people even consider them a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, don’t they? Olivia Munn portrayed Psylocke in “X-Men: Apocalypse” back in 2016. Despite receiving negative critiques, it’s still a movie worth watching!
