12 Ways Andor Enhances Rogue One: Star Wars’ Underrated Gem Gets Better
Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Andor season 2, episodes 10-12
As a dedicated Star Wars enthusiast, I’ve got to say that the series “Andor” has remarkably enhanced and elevated the 2016 movie, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” Set in the years preceding the events of both “Rogue One” and “A New Hope,” the second season of “Andor” has just concluded, providing a captivating prelude to the events unfolding in “Rogue One” and culminating right before the pivotal Battle of Scarif. In this journey, the Star Wars show has managed to make “Rogue One” even more compelling than it initially was.
Over its two seasons and 24 episodes, Andor delves into the transformative journey of Diego Luna’s character, Cassian Andor, evolving him into the Rebellion leader we met in 2016’s Rogue One. Simultaneously, the resistance against the Empire intensifies, ultimately maturing into the complete Rebel Alliance on Yavin. Featuring an array of both Rebel and Imperial characters, here are all the significant adjustments and enhancements made to the original tale of Rogue One by Andor.
14. “Rebellions Are Built On Hope”
Rogue’s One Most Iconic Line
In episode 8 of season 2 in the series ‘Andor’, the tragic Ghorman Massacre was orchestrated by Imperial forces as a deceptive tactic, known as a false flag operation. They sparked violent protests among the people of Ghorman, falsely accusing outside agitators of instigating and driving the violence. The Empire then used this fabricated narrative to justify the elimination of hundreds of peaceful protesters. This ruthless act paved the way for Imperial mining operations on the planet, leading to widespread instability that eventually facilitated the secretive Death Star project’s progress.
In the course of a mission for Luthen Rael, Cassian Andor was an eyewitness to a significant incident on Ghorman. It was here that the Rebel soldier initially encountered the famous line from Rogue One: “Rebellions are born out of hope”. This piece of wisdom was shared with him by a hotel clerk in Ghorman who persisted in his fight for his people, even when facing insurmountable odds. This new perspective on Cassian’s later recitation of the iconic Rogue One phrase to Jyn Erso becomes especially significant, particularly after she utilizes it to rally the entire Alliance at the conclusion of Rogue One.
13. Rogue One’s Tivik and Bodi Rook Corroborated Luthen’s Intel From Andor’s Finale
How The Rebels Already Knew About Galen and An Imperial Superweapon
In the movie Rogue One, I encountered Tivik, an informant, regarding whispers of the Empire constructing a formidable weapon with Galen Erso’s assistance, a crucial engineer. Interestingly, it seemed that my alliance and I had some prior knowledge about Erso and the rumors of this new weapon being developed. However, Luthen Rael from Andor season 2 is now revealed to have been the one who initially shared intel about Erso and the Death Star project with us. This implies that Tivik’s information, along with Bodi Rook’s in Rogue One, merely confirmed what we had already suspected, shedding light on a longstanding mystery from the original Star Wars film.
12. K-2SO’s “Reprogramming” And True Origins
Rewriting The Original Canon
In the Ghorman Massacre, there was an Imperial droid named K-2SO. During Andor season 2, this droid almost killed Cassian but was instead hit by a speeder. Later, Cassian retrieved the droid’s remains and brought them to Yavin. At Yavin, K-2SO received a new central processing unit that overwrote his Imperial programming, though not completely as Kaytoo suggests in Rogue One. This change allowed him to partner with Cassian instead.
In this revised version of the storyline, K-2SO’s origins as presented in the canon comics are significantly altered. This change is beneficial, as it sets up a more intriguing initial encounter for the characters in “Rogue One”. Instead of Cassian single-handedly reprogramming an Imperial droid like Kaytoo in the wilderness, it now makes more sense that a group of engineers would be involved in modifying him.
11. Saw Gerrera’s Full Instability And Alliance Tensions
An Unhinged (And Addicted) Extremist
Additionally, Andor provided further insight into just how extreme and unstable Saw Gerrera became. He had no qualms about firing upon his own men if he doubted their loyalty, and he refused to collaborate with the Alliance leaders. Saw’s Partisans were ruthless in their pursuit of freedom from the Empire, regardless of the price they paid. Furthermore, it becomes clear that his paranoia stemmed from the revelation in Andor season 2 about Saw Gerrera’s addiction to rhydonium, a volatile starfighter fuel. Inhaling its harmful vapors, he found temporary clarity but suffered lasting harm to both his mind and body. Thus, this helps to explain why Saw was so unhinged in Rogue One, as well as his reliance on an oxygen tank.
10. The Influence Of the Force On Cassian Andor
Going Beyond Jyn Erso
In the movie “Rogue One“, Jyn Erso’s connection with the Force is evident. Her mother, a devout believer in the Force, passed on her faith by encouraging Jyn to rely on it and giving her a kyber crystal before she passed away. Throughout the film, characters such as Chirrut îmwe and Baze Malbus serve as reminders of the Force’s presence for Jyn.
Yet, Andor also reveals the Force’s impact on Cassian’s journey. On Yavin, a Force-sensitive healer perceived Cassian as a “bearer of messages,” hinting at his role in Rogue One. Consequently, the closing episodes of Andor delve into Cassian accepting his destiny and the Rebellion, aligning with the Force’s design for him, similar to Jyn and their parallel roles as messengers.
9. Jyn’s Mother May Have More Of A Force Connection Than We Thought
Some Key Similarities With Andor Season 2’s Force Healer
It’s plausible that Jyn Erso’s mother might have had a stronger connection to the Force than what we saw in “Rogue One.” Although this is just speculation, it’s interesting to note that Lyra Erso and the Force healer from “Andor” both wear similar attire. Additionally, the existence of non-Jedi Force healers implies there might be other Force-sensitive beings in the “Star Wars” universe who could sense and use the Force, although they may not have been powerful enough to become Jedi or were never discovered by the Order.
8. Cassian’s Complex Relationship With The Alliance
Andor’s Willingness To Break The Rules
In “Rogue One,” it appears that Cassian is a loyal Rebel who faithfully follows orders until meeting Jyn Erso and violating protocol to infiltrate Scarif. However, the series “Andor” reveals that Cassian was more independent than previously thought, while still being dedicated to the cause. In fact, Cassian frequently disregarded Alliance regulations to do what he believed was right. Flying a U-Wing to Scarif wasn’t his first unauthorized mission; he also stole an Alliance ship to go to Ghorman and rescue both Mon Mothma and Kleya from Coruscant, which are important instances of his rule-bending behavior.
7. The Full Pressure of Krennic’s Failures and Delays:
“When Has Become Now”
In the series Andor, we delve deeper into Director Krennic’s predicament, as both Grand Moff Tarkin and Darth Vader criticize him for repeated delays and security lapses. The show reveals that the Death Star was initially intended to be operational a year earlier in the Star Wars timeline. However, difficulties in procuring materials like kalkite on Ghorman and kyber crystals on Jedha slowed down its construction. Furthermore, contrary to what Rogue One suggests, the initial security leaks did not originate from Jedha, but rather from a mole within the Imperial Security Bureau planted by Luthen Rael, which better explains the numerous security breaches that Tarkin accuses Krennic of in Rogue One.
6. Andor Season 2 Confirms Just How Close The Rebellion Came To Its Own Demise
Death Star Skepticism
5.
Although Luthen perished on Coruscant following his acquisition of intel from an ISB informant, the data was nonetheless relayed to Cassian and eventually reached the Alliance leadership on Yavin.
It is worth noting that Mon Mothma was the lone individual who did not question the authenticity of the news about the Imperial’s hidden super weapon.
In time, Cassian managed to connect with his informant Tivik to verify the intel as depicted at the start of Rogue One. The near-disaster that the Alliance narrowly avoided underscores just how crucial it was for Cassian’s reports and Luthen’s information to be given due consideration.
