11 horror movies for Scream fans on Netflix

As a horror aficionado who has spent countless nights huddled under the covers, my heart racing as I watch the latest slasher films, I must say that these recent offerings have been truly chilling. The Fear Street trilogy on Netflix is a testament to how timeless the genre can be, with each part expertly weaving its own tale within the larger narrative, much like threads in a horror tapestry.

Horror flicks are highly sought after because fans of the genre are constantly on the lookout for fresh ideas or creative twists on familiar themes. Back in 1996, the movie “Scream” fundamentally changed the slasher genre by introducing a contemporary setting and breathing new life into it, paving the way for numerous other films to follow suit. The series now boasts six movies, with a seventh scheduled for release shortly.

Unfortunately, it appears that none of the “Scream” films can be found on Netflix at the moment, but fear not! We’ve compiled a thrilling list of movies with similar themes that are guaranteed to quench your thirst for horror and violence.

1 & 2. The Babysitter (2017) & The Babysitter: Killer Queen (2020)

The films titled “The Babysitter” and its follow-up, “The Babysitter: Killer Queen,” are perfectly suited for the contemporary slasher genre. These movies, classified as teen black comedies, are the brainchild of director McG, who previously made his mark with Charlie’s Angels. Fans of the initial movie, which garnered mostly positive feedback, should appreciate the sequel, despite its mixed reception.

As a devoted movie enthusiast, I can’t help but express my excitement over these two films that blend horror, humor, and mystery in an incredible way. I found myself on the edge of my seat as Samara Weaving brought Bee, the babysitter and secret cult member, to life with an exceptional performance. The supporting cast, featuring talents like Judah Lewis, Hana Mae Lee, Robbie Amell, Bella Thorne, Andrew Bachelor, Emily Alyn Lind, Leslie Bibb, and Ken Marino, added depth and intrigue to the storyline. These movies are not for the faint-hearted due to their gruesome scenes and heavy gore, but if you’re up for a rollercoaster ride of laughter, suspense, and unexpected twists, these films won’t disappoint!

3. Thanksgiving (2023)

Eli Roth’s horror flick, titled “Thanksgiving“, was developed from a story co-written by Roth and Roger Birnbaum. Originally showcased as a mock trailer within the 2007 film “Grindhouse“, it marks the third full-length movie produced based on the fictional trailers directed by Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino.

Every year during Thanksgiving, a small Massachusetts town experiences fear as an unseen killer donning a John Carver mask (a Pilgrim who sailed on the Mayflower) strikes terror. This movie features Patrick Dempsey, Addison Rae, Milo Manheim, Jalen Thomas Brooks, Nell Verlaque, Rick Hoffman, and Gina Gershon. Notably, it has garnered acclaim for its exaggerated humor, gory scenes that push the boundaries, and a nod to the classic slasher film aesthetic of yesteryears.

4. There’s Someone Inside Your House (2021)

The Netflix original horror movie titled “There’s Someone Inside Your House” was directed by Patrick Brice, who is recognized for his work on the found-footage films Creep and Creep 2. In this film, Sydney Park, Théodore Pellerin, Asjha Cooper, Jesse LaTourette, and Diego Josef star. The movie is an adaptation of Stephanie Perkins’ novel with the same title.

The plot unfolds in the imaginary town of Osborne, Nebraska, where a senior transfer student finds herself at the heart of chilling murders that have instilled fear among her high school peers. This movie strikes a perfect balance between terror and drama, making it an enticing choice for horror enthusiasts.

5. The Rental (2020)

In this chilling horror movie titled “The Rental,” directorial newcomer Dave Franco, who co-scripted the story with Joe Swanberg and Mike Demski, takes the helm. As our four protagonists embark on a weekend vacation in a rented house, they grow increasingly uneasy with the idea of being observed. Their already strained relationships become even more complicated when they are pursued by a ruthless killer.

In this chilling horror film, Dan Stevens, Alison Brie, Shelia Vand, Jeremy Allen White, and Toby Huss take on leading roles. The movie skillfully transitions the narrative from a relaxing getaway weekend to deep-seated relationship conflicts, ultimately transforming into an exhilarating horror experience.

6, 7 & 8. Fear Street trilogy (2021)

2021 saw Netflix unveil a chilling trilogy of horror films adapted from R.L. Stein’s books, collectively titled Fear Street. This spine-tingling narrative is uniquely structured, unfolding in reverse chronological order to reveal the sinister origins of an ancient terror that has long haunted a particular community. Each installment of the trilogy is set during a distinct time frame and delves into the terrifying events that each era faced as a result of this malevolent force.

Director Leigh Janiak drew inspiration for parts 1 and 2 of the story from the horror classics “Scream” and “Friday the 13th,” respectively, while the third part was influenced by “The New World.” Each film stands alone but contributes to a larger narrative. Actors like Kiana Madeira, Olivia Scott Welch, Benjamin Flores Jr., Ted Sutherland, Emily Rudd, Ashley Zukerman, Sadie Sink, Mya Hawke, and others appear in multiple films within the series.

1. The three movies earned praise from critics, and surprisingly, even though they were adapted from children’s books, these horror films are top-notch for dedicated slasher enthusiasts.

9. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)

Fifty years after the initial film, David Blue Garcia’s “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” marks the ninth movie in the series. This new story serves as a standalone sequel, being the first one to adhere to the original continuity since “The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre” (1995).

In the wake of the 1973 massacre by Leatherface, a team of ambitious businesspeople arrive in the town of Harlow years later, aiming to purchase and modernize the old buildings, transforming it into a fashionable, revitalized neighborhood. The sole survivor of the initial massacre, Sally Hardesty, now a Texas Ranger, becomes embroiled in the situation as Leatherface resumes his murderous rampage once more.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022) ranked second on Netflix’s worldwide charts, but its reception among critics was largely negative. Despite this, it maintains the grisly essence of the original film, delivering the expected dose of violence and gore. This time, the story has been updated, but the slasher vibe remains intact. Critics sometimes overlook the fact that slasher films aren’t always about complex narratives; they can still be enjoyable without them.

10 & 11. Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight (2020) & the 2021 sequel

The horror movies titled “Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight” (with a sequel) were created by Bartosz M. Kowalski, with contributions from Jan Kwieciński and Mirella Zaradkiewicz. These films tell the story of a group of tech-reliant teenagers who are sent to a summer camp where they must disconnect from technology. As you might imagine, given that it’s set at a summer camp, things take a dark turn next.

1. In the camp, the campers are subsequently tormented by a malevolent entity aiming to erase them permanently from existence. However, this isn’t your typical American horror movie; it’s a Polish production that delves into the nation’s cultural quirks, ironies, and stereotypes. The sequel picks up where it left off but takes an unexpected turn at the end.
