11 Halloween movies to watch on Hulu this October 2024
As a die-hard fan of all things horrifying and supernatural, I simply can’t contain my excitement about the upcoming episodes of American Horror Stories! Having binge-watched every episode of its parent series, American Horror Story, I’m eagerly awaiting this anthology spinoff. It’s like a box of chocolates – you never know what terrifying tale you’ll get next!
Here I am, basking in the thrill of the spooky season! FearFest is at its peak, Freeform has ignited their “31 Days of Halloween” extravaganza, Netflix has unveiled their chilling “Netflix & Chills,” and Hulu is hosting an epic “Huluween” celebration. As a horror enthusiast, it doesn’t get any better than this! But even if you’re just a casual Halloween lover like me, the excitement is palpable!
Every autumn, Hulu beefs up its collection of horror films, but it really pulls out all the stops during the fall season. Right now, the platform is hosting a variety of new releases under the banner “Huluween,” including movies such as “Breathe and Wait,” “Mr. Crocket,” and “Carved.” Additionally, fresh episodes of “American Horror Stories” are being added, and you can catch up on the current horror drama series “Grotesquerie” on Hulu a day after they air on FX.
All things considered, being a Hulu subscriber is currently fantastic, and it becomes even more delightful if you’re partaking in the Disney+ bundle. This is because Disney+ offers an abundance of family-friendly Halloween movies for your enjoyment.
Hold Your Breath (2024)
In the recently released horror movie titled “Hold Your Breath,” Sarah Paulson takes the leading role. Her character is a single mother living in 1930s Oklahoma, who believes that an ominous dust storm conceals an evil presence. The film has elements of psychological thriller as well, but given Paulson’s consistent performance quality, it’s definitely worth watching. Additionally, she can be seen in another Hulu horror production, “Run,” which is currently available for streaming.
Mr. Crocket (2024)
1993 sees the introduction of Mr. Crocket, a dual-named film character who also serves as the villain within the narrative. He hosts a children’s show with an eerie twist, where he takes pleasure in embodying Samara from The Ring and appearing suddenly on television screens to abduct children, following the gruesome murder of their parents. In one instance, a mother is powerless to prevent her son’s kidnapping, sparking her unwavering determination to save him at all costs. This year, “Huluween” will premiere Mr. Crocket, with streaming set to begin on October 11.
Carved (2024)
The latest horror flick on Hulu, titled “Carved”, is set to start streaming on October 21. This movie follows a group of teenagers who find themselves stranded overnight in a historical reenactment, only to face a vengeful and sentient pumpkin that starts attacking them when they least expect it.
Cobweb (2023)
Last year’s film, Cobweb, turned out to be an unexpected delight that maintains its charm well. Despite being a horror movie, it has a surprising warmth to it. Fear not, it still delivers the chills, but it embodies the essence of Halloween with its fitting atmosphere. It’s perfect for getting into the spooky mood. The plot revolves around a young boy who mysteriously hears tapping on the walls of his house during the night. However, his parents, played by Antony Starr and Lizzy Caplan, insist they can’t hear anything, raising suspicions that they might be concealing a dreadful secret.
The First Omen (2024)
Remaining one of my top picks for movies released this year, “The First Omen” stands out as an exceptional prequel to “The Omen“. It’s also a more violent than expected mainstream horror movie that boasts impressive performances from Nell Tiger Free. The plot centers around an American woman starting her life serving God in Rome, only to find herself entangled in a dark conspiracy aimed at the birth of the Antichrist.
The Boogeyman (2023)
Sophie Thatcher from the show “Yellowjackets” is rapidly emerging as an actress to keep an eye on, and her reputation as a budding scream queen continues to grow with movies like this one, along with upcoming films such as “Heretic” and “Companion”. The movie “The Boogeyman” is adapted from a short story by Stephen King, focusing on a family still mourning the death of their mother. Their father, played by Chris Messina, is a therapist who works from home. On one particular day, an extremely troubled patient of his unexpectedly shows up for a session and leaves behind a being that thrives on others’ pain.
American Horror Stories
As a gamer, I’d say it feels like each episode of American Horror Stories is its own self-contained game level, with a fresh storyline and different characters every time. Being a spin-off from the iconic series American Horror Story, five new episodes are dropping later this month, making now the ideal moment to dive back in if you’ve missed out!
Edward Scissorhands (1990)
For parents seeking shared entertainment with their kids, they can stream the beloved Tim Burton film, “Edward Scissorhands”. Coincidentally, another popular Burton movie, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice“, will be released on PVOD on October 8! In this film, we trace the life of a character named Edward, who is half-human and has scissor blades for hands due to the scientist who created him passing away before he could complete his work.
Alien (1979)
With “Alien” being a hot topic lately due to the acclaimed reception and box office triumph of “Alien: Romulus” and the recently unveiled teaser for the upcoming FX series “Alien: Earth”, it seems like the ideal time to revisit Ridley Scott’s 1979 sci-fi masterpiece. Currently, Hulu is streaming a number of movies from the franchise, and “Alien: Romulus” will be available on Premium Video On Demand starting October 15.
Us (2019)
Without a doubt, it’s hard not to single out “Us” as my top pick among Jordan Peele’s movies thus far. The movie excels in creating an unsettling horror atmosphere that is simply impeccable, and Lupita Nyong’o delivers an exceptional performance that leaves a lasting impression. As a young girl, Adelaide endured a harrowing event during a holiday trip. Years later, she returns to the same location with her family – husband and two kids – only to be gripped by fear that history might repeat itself. Her dread becomes reality when four individuals who resemble her loved ones unexpectedly show up at their vacation home.
Censor (2021)
I’m eager to seize any chance to endorse Prano Bailey-Bond’s 2021 film, titled “Censor,” which centers on a British film screener known for being the sternest ‘censor.’ The story unfolds during the peak of the 1980s video nasty period, where we follow Enid (Niamh Algar) as she carries out her routine of watching horror movies and determining what material should be edited. However, things take a dark turn when she encounters a peculiar low-budget horror featuring an actress who bears a striking resemblance to her missing sister Alice, leading her on a chilling journey into the heart of darkness.
