10 Years Later, HBO’s ‘The Night Of’ Still Deserves a Season 2

HBO has consistently delivered some of the most captivating crime dramas on television, from classics like Oz and The Sopranos to more recent hits like The Wire and True Detective. These shows often delve into the effects of crime and the justice system on individuals, or the psychological impact of violence and drug use. While many of these series enjoyed long runs, allowing viewers to become deeply invested in the stories and characters, one critically acclaimed 2016 series has not yet been renewed for another season.

Before he died, James Gandolfini, best known for The Sopranos, was set to appear in an American adaptation of the British show Criminal Justice. John Turturro eventually took over the role in a series that became The Night Of. Riz Ahmed, fresh off his success in Nightcrawler, also starred, alongside Michael Kenneth Williams and Bill Camp.

At first glance, The Night Of seems like many other limited-run true crime shows, but it was released at a time that unfortunately coincided with some upsetting real-life incidents.

The Podcast That Captivated the World

While not the first podcast ever made, Sarah Koenig’s Serial is widely considered to have transformed the medium. Podcasts were already enjoyed by people interested in news, sports, and comedy, but listeners had to actively search them out. True crime hadn’t yet become as popular as it is now, and Serial explored the 1999 murder of Hae Min Lee and the subsequent arrest of Adnan Syed. Each episode offered new details as Koenig investigated the case, featuring not only her account of events but also interviews with people involved, including Syed, who consistently claimed he was innocent.

Both the documentaries Serial and The Night Of tell stories of young Pakistani-American men convicted of murder despite limited direct evidence. Serial focused on Adnan Syed, who was found guilty of killing his former girlfriend. The Night Of followed Nasir Khan, who was convicted after being accused of killing Andrea, a woman he’d spent a night with after meeting her and using drugs together.

Because both Serial and The Night Of featured a Pakistani-American man convicted of killing a romantic partner, and both stories involved lingering questions and exposed flaws in the legal system, many viewers thought the HBO series was based on the podcast. However, despite the striking similarities, The Night Of actually began production before Serial was even released.

Similar to the popular podcast Serial, the structure of The Night Of allowed for the possibility of future storylines, and the show’s creators have hinted at this over time.

‘The Night Of’ Creators Want Season 2 as Much as the Fans

Critics loved the single season of the show, giving it a 94% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earning several award nominations. Riz Ahmed even won an Emmy for his leading role, beating out his co-star John Turturro. The series came out after the second season of True Detective, which many fans felt didn’t live up to the quality of the first. While both shows center around murders and investigations, viewers hoping The Night Of would simply continue the style of True Detective found it was quite different. The Night Of focused more on the impact of the legal system on individuals, rather than solely on solving the crime itself.

Despite many possible directions for future storylines and cases, the show could continue for several more seasons, even with a completely new set of characters. The original Criminal Justice had two seasons, which suggests The Night Of could also be revisited. In 2020, John Turturro mentioned to Deadline that they had a few ideas for continuing the series and were in the early stages of discussing them.

Even though a second season of The Night Of might not happen, the original eight-episode series is still a compelling and captivating watch, available now on HBO Max.
