Wow, it’s hard to believe, but 2006 was actually two decades ago! It really makes you think about how quickly time passes, especially when looking back at the movies we loved. I remember when films like The Departed, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, and The Devil Wears Prada were all the rage – it feels like just yesterday!
Beyond the popular and famous movies of 2006, there were also some fantastic, lesser-known films. These movies didn’t get much attention when they were released – they either didn’t do well in theaters, or they were simply too small to make a big splash.
Several movies from 2006 that weren’t initially huge hits have become more well-known over the years. These include Bong Joon Ho’s The Host, Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, and Idiocracy. Even films like Snakes on a Plane have gained a following for being delightfully silly, and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift is now seen as a turning point for the Fast & Furious series.
As a film buff, I’m always excited to unearth hidden gems, and 2006 was a surprisingly good year for them! There are still so many fantastic, underrated movies from that year just waiting to be discovered. In fact, with their 20th anniversaries coming up in 2026, now is the perfect time to seek them out. You might even spot some future stars in early roles, or rediscover films that deserved more attention back then. Trust me, they’re all worth checking out.
Glory Road
When you think of great basketball movies, titles like White Men Can’t Jump, He Got Game, and Hustle immediately come to mind. But Glory Road, while having a compelling story, often gets overlooked.
The movie Glory Road is based on the real story of the 1966 University of Texas at El Paso basketball team, which made history as the first college team to start five African American players.
The movie wasn’t a commercial success and received only average reviews. Despite this, it featured excellent performances from Josh Lucas and Derek Luke, making it a surprisingly good and often overlooked basketball film.
Wedding Daze
Every year, some enjoyable romantic comedies don’t get the attention they deserve, and in 2006, Wedding Daze was one of those hidden gems. The movie is instantly appealing thanks to its delightful stars, Isla Fisher and Jason Biggs.
Both actors had recently finished successful projects – Biggs with the American Pie movies and Fisher with Wedding Crashers. However, Wedding Daze itself didn’t become a major hit, though it’s still an enjoyable film with a talented cast.
The movie follows Anderson and Katie, who both recently went through breakups. They meet and impulsively decide to get married, leading to a lot of funny and charming moments. It’s directed by Michael Ian Black, known for his work on Wet Hot American Summer.
Unknown
Because it has a common title and wasn’t widely released, many people don’t even know the movie Unknown exists. Despite this, it features a strong cast including Greg Kinnear, Bridget Moynahan, Jim Caviezel, and Joe Pantoliano.
The movie Unknown starts with a captivating mystery: several men wake up in an old warehouse, unable to remember anything about their pasts. As they search for answers, they slowly piece together the events that led to their capture.
The characters in Unknown are all deeply distrustful of one another, and with good reason. This creates a compelling mystery that keeps you on the edge of your seat, eager to find out what happens next.
A Scanner Darkly
Released in 2006, A Scanner Darkly stands out as a truly original film, not only for that year but for the entire decade of the 2000s. The movie, directed by Richard Linklater and based on Philip K. Dick’s 1977 novel, used a special animation technique called interpolated rotoscoping.
This sets A Scanner Darkly apart from other films released around the same time. The movie also boasts a fantastic cast including Robert Downey Jr., Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves, Woody Harrelson, and several other well-known actors.
The film A Scanner Darkly takes place in a dark, futuristic world where the police constantly monitor everyone due to a widespread drug problem. While it initially received good reviews, it’s become somewhat overlooked, but fans of the actors involved might still enjoy it.
Smokin’ Aces
I recently discovered a movie called Smokin’ Aces, and wow, the cast is incredible! Seriously, it’s packed with so many famous faces – it feels like everyone in Hollywood is in it. It’s a really great film, but for some reason, it’s still kind of a hidden gem, and I wish more people knew about it.
The film features a star-studded cast including Jason Bateman, Ryan Reynolds, Taraji P. Henson, Chris Pine, Ben Affleck, Joel Edgerton, and Kevin Durand. It also showcases strong performances from actors like Common, Alicia Keys, and Tommy Flanagan, who often don’t get the recognition they deserve.
Smokin’ Aces is an action movie about a Las Vegas magician who’s turned informant and is now being hunted by the mob. A $1 million reward is offered for his capture, leading to a chaotic battle between numerous assassins at the hotel where he’s hiding.
Grandma’s Boy
It’s not uncommon for a movie to be initially disliked by critics but later gain a dedicated fan base. That happened with Grandma’s Boy, a film that includes a lot of Adam Sandler’s frequent co-stars.
The movie follows Alex, a video game tester facing a tough time after losing his apartment and having to move in with his grandma. He also develops a crush on his supervisor at work and dreams of creating his own video game, but his boss isn’t supportive of his ambitions.
Allen Covert is really funny as the main character, and the movie has a great supporting cast including Linda Cardellini, Doris Roberts, Jonah Hill, and a quick appearance by David Spade. It’s one of the most hilariously silly comedies you’ll find from 2006.
The Dead Girl
Following the popularity of Pulp Fiction, many films began experimenting with stories that didn’t follow a traditional beginning-to-end order. The Dead Girl is one example of a movie that successfully used this technique, though it didn’t receive as much attention.
The movie The Dead Girl centers around a young woman’s murder and how it impacts the people around her. The story unfolds in five sections, each focusing on a different person connected to the case: ‘The Stranger,’ ‘The Sisters,’ ‘The Wife,’ ‘The Mother,’ and finally, ‘The Dead Girl’ herself.
Featuring strong performances from Brittany Murphy, Toni Collette, Rose Byrne, and other talented actors, this film received positive reviews from critics. However, despite the praise, it wasn’t a commercial success, earning less than $1 million at the box office.
Slither
James Gunn is currently one of Hollywood’s most well-known directors. He became famous for his work on the Guardians of the Galaxy movies and is now leading the DC Universe.
Despite his many great films, one of his very best is actually his first time directing, Slither, from 20 years ago. It’s a fantastic mix of his unique humor with elements of science fiction and horror.
The movie Slither tells the story of a small town overrun by a strange alien creature. It’s become a fan favorite, and stars Nathan Fillion, Elizabeth Banks, and Michael Rooker.
Stick It
Most popular sports have been featured in movies, but gymnastics deserves more attention. The sport always gains fans during the Summer Olympics, and films could capitalize on that increased interest.
Stick It is a fun and memorable film. It follows Haley Graham (played by Missy Peregrym), a troubled teenager who unexpectedly finds herself back in the competitive world of gymnastics, despite wanting to leave it behind.
The movie features a strong supporting cast including Jeff Bridges, Vanessa Lengies, and Kellan Lutz. Though critics had varying opinions, Stick It is enjoyable, especially knowing it was directed by the writer of Bring It On, and has gained a dedicated following over time.
Half Nelson
Ryan Gosling is now one of Hollywood’s most popular actors, thanks to memorable roles in films like La La Land, Project Hail Mary, Barbie, and Blade Runner 2049, among many others.
One of his strongest roles was in the little-known film Half Nelson. He portrays a middle school teacher who develops a friendship with a student and discovers she’s struggling with drug use.
Although it’s not Ryan Gosling’s most well-known film, Half Nelson helped launch his career and earned him an Academy Award nomination when he was only 26. It’s a film any Gosling fan should definitely check out.
