For example, the movie “Alien vs. Predator” may receive criticism but offers an exciting opportunity for audiences to witness two iconic figures from their respective franchises clash in a major blockbuster event. Similarly, the Monsterverse series, which includes Godzilla and King Kong, delivers an unexpected face-off between two of the most famous monsters in sci-fi history.

In many science fiction films, it’s not unusual to find impressive cast lineups with famous actors taking on key roles. Yet, what truly delights sci-fi enthusiasts is encountering unexpected stars in these movies. A notable instance is Jamie Lee Curtis’ appearance in Star Trek: Section 31, a movie criticized for its perplexing creative decisions. Despite the film’s lackluster reception, Curtis’ surprise cameo might be the only standout aspect worth remembering. These unforeseen appearances by familiar faces in sci-fi movies add depth to our viewing pleasure.

As a film enthusiast, I’d say that “Young Frankenstein” is my personal favorite comedic take on the classic Universal Monsters movie-making era, and it brilliantly lampoons the 1931 “Frankenstein.” This timeless black-and-white horror masterpiece continues to impress audiences even today. One of the many amusing scenes involves a character, played by the versatile Gene Hackman, who’s blind and attempts to acquaint Frankenstein’s monster with cigars. Unfortunately, he ends up lighting his own finger on fire instead! The scene culminates in an unforgettable moment when Hackman improvised a classic line that made it into the final cut due to its side-splitting humor. Even he found it too hard to recite it without cracking up again.

Deadpool 2 (2018)

David Leitch’s “Deadpool 2” is a superhero movie filled with uproarious humor that occasionally veers off its storyline. Yet, the laugh-out-loud moments are so captivating that the minor flaws don’t significantly spoil the overall enjoyment of the film. The film’s R-rated silliness, powered by one of Ryan Reynolds’ finest performances to date, enhances the movie by adding even more humor with his witty commentary, making already funny scenes even funnier.

In the thrilling world of Deadpool 2, one scene that truly stands out for me as a movie critic is when our anti-hero leads his freshly assembled team on missions. As Deadpool gracefully touches down, he anticipates the arrival of his comrades’ parachutes on the distant horizon. Among the first to leap is a figure shrouded in mystery – one we hadn’t heard speak or seen face-to-face until now. When this enigmatic character collides with a live wire, it was none other than Brad Pitt that was unmasked, delivering a brief yet impactful cameo in the film.

Spaceballs (1987)

For many years, Mel Brooks’ comedic takes on classic films have kept audiences entertained, and one of his finest works is Spaceballs – a humorous take on Star Wars. The iconic birthing scene from Alien being spoofed in Spaceballs is something I never expect, and it always catches me off guard whenever I watch the movie.

The fan base surrounding the movie series, “Jurassic World,” a spin-off from the “Jurassic Park” trilogy, has grown into a massive blockbuster franchise, with another film set to hit theaters in 2025. One of the many iconic scenes in this franchise is Laura Dern’s appearance in “Jurassic World Dominion,” reprising her beloved character from the Jurassic Park trilogy. While the script might have its flaws, the memorable set pieces are sure to endure in the memories of fans for many years, making the anticipation for the upcoming TRON: Ares so great.

In the film TRON: Legacy, the futuristic environment is marked by a striking color scheme of white, yellow, red, and blue against black backdrops. The overall look is enhanced by the cutting-edge music score created by musicians Daft Punk. Surprisingly, Daft Punk made an appearance in the movie during an action sequence that took place in a nightclub. During this scene, they are seen performing their famous tunes from within a DJ booth as the fight commences.

Free Guy (2021)

Free Guy boasts one of the freshest concepts for a video game-themed film in recent times, yet it fails to fully capitalize on this creativity by opting for familiar themes and striking moments instead. The story revolves around Ryan Reynolds’ character, an NPC within a video game, who defies expectations when he acquires free will. He then endeavors to escape the predefined script of his programming, interacting with gamers online as they grapple with what appears to be a system error.

As a movie enthusiast, I must say that “Free Guy” takes viewers on an entertaining journey filled with winks and nods to beloved video games and franchises. Yet, beneath its nostalgic veneer lies a commentary on the creative stagnation prevalent in an industry overly dependent on established franchises.

However, amidst this exploration, there are moments that truly shine, such as when our hero hacks into the code and equips himself with legendary items, like lightsabers and Captain America’s shield. In a delightful, humorous twist, none other than Chris Evans makes a brief yet memorable appearance, watching the game’s live stream and reacting to that very scene.

3. Craig Lamar Traylor

Renner (2025)

In the latest sci-fi thriller movie “Renner,” Frankie Muniz, best known for his role in “Malcolm in the Middle,” plays the lead character. This character is a brilliant computer whizz who designs an AI to assist him in finding a romantic partner. However, he inadvertently incorporates his mother’s consciousness into the AI, altering its actions. As the story unfolds, he finds himself in a dilemma, torn between following the AI’s advice and his growing feelings for his neighbor.

Muniz, primarily engrossed in his automobile racing pursuits and taking a break from acting temporarily, still manages to give a strong lead performance in an unremarkable film. In one of the most unexpected sci-fi movie appearances lately, Craig Lamar Traylor – known for portraying Stevie, Malcolm’s friend on Malcolm in the Middle – pops up as a neighbor whom the main character merely passes by. Although they don’t engage directly, it’s a delightful throwback for fans of the sitcom!

2. Steven Spielberg

Vanilla Sky (2001)

Filmmakers often make appearances in their own movies, with directors such as Alfred Hitchcock and Quentin Tarantino being regular faces on screen. Similarly, other artists are known to feature themselves in films inspired by their work, like Stan Lee who appeared in many Marvel Cinematic Universe films throughout his lifetime. Interestingly, a director’s cameo can sometimes be a delightful surprise, such as the brief appearance of Steven Spielberg in Cameron Crowe’s film “Vanilla Sky.

In essence, Steven Spielberg didn’t contribute to the film in any role and his appearance was just a coincidence. He happened to be on set one day, and Tom Cruise’s character (the main character in Vanilla Sky) asked him to make an appearance. Interestingly enough, they later collaborated on Minority Report, a movie that might give you pause if you’re apprehensive about artificial intelligence.
