10 Things We Hope To See in ‘The Last of Us’ Season 3

The second season finale of “The Last of Us” sparked much debate among both the show’s viewers and gamers due to its highly contentious episode. The seven-episode narrative culminated in a significant cliffhanger, leaving many opinions divided. Given the deaths of key characters and its complex, non-chronological storyline, there has been no shortage of discussion surrounding this latest video game adaptation.

Although Season 2 of The Last of Us Part II video game has already been released, there remains a significant amount of content from the game that hasn’t been adapted for screen yet. This leaves plenty of room for exploration and potential direction in future seasons (possibly even two). For instance, we could learn more about Abby’s past, or witness flashbacks involving Ellie and Joel, among numerous other ways to expand the narrative of The Last of Us: Part II.

Here are 10 things we hope to see in season 3 of The Last of Us.

See More Flashbacks of Joel

Joel is undeniably one of the most captivating characters in the entire series, a point that many people can agree on. It’s not just his exceptional character development, but Pedro Pascal delivers a standout performance as the strong-willed yet endearing protagonist. Regrettably, Joel’s time was tragically limited due to his untimely death in season 2. However, his flashback scenes were among the most memorable moments of that season. I eagerly anticipate more flashbacks featuring Joel in season 3, as I feel there are still untapped potentials for his character and opportunities to advance the storyline further.

Joel Died Way Too Soon

In episode two, the unexpected passing of Joel left quite a few viewers stunned, especially those unfamiliar with the game. The show’s fans had mixed responses to his death, with some arguing that it was more about defying expectations than creating a compelling storyline. I share this perspective. Although I appreciate the shock factors in “The Last of Us,” Joel’s death felt cruel and lacked a well-rounded narrative arc. Later episodes aimed to complete Joel’s story, but it came too late and fell short.

Split Between Abby and Ellie’s Story

Given that Abby was only prominently featured in a few episodes during season 2, hinting at her origin in the finale, it seems plausible that we can expect to see more of Abby moving forward. While it’s exciting to witness a supporting character receiving greater depth, I’m not convinced that an entire season dedicated to Abby is warranted. After dedicating an entire season to Ellie’s storyline in season 2 (and leaving her arc incomplete), it would be disappointing if we didn’t see Ellie’s narrative continue into season 3. If the show balances exploring Abby’s past and resolving Ellie’s current storyline, it would significantly enhance the overall quality of the series.

Kaitlyn Dever Is Great as Abby

After joining the cast of “The Last of Us” TV series, Kaitlyn Dever has faced criticism due to fans feeling she doesn’t match her game character’s muscular build. However, despite online controversy, Dever delivers one of the most powerful and complex performances in the entire show. The intensity and emotional depth she conveys on screen more than compensates for her smaller physical stature, which some might find even scarier. While it’s simple to focus on the differences as negative, it’s difficult to argue against Dever’s portrayal being anything but exceptional.

More Full Flashback Episodes

One significant factor that contributes to The Last of Us being regarded as one of gaming’s greatest stories is its innovative non-linear narrative style. This approach allows the game to shift between different time periods in a poignant way, resulting in an unpredictable story structure and introducing fresh and creative methods for storytelling. These time jumps also serve a purpose by providing context for characters, enabling viewers to comprehend their actions better or anticipate future events in the narrative. If season 3 were to abandon flashback episodes, it would undoubtedly be a letdown.

The Flashback Episodes Are the Best in the Show

It’s quite clear that many viewers might find the flashback episodes to be the most powerful throughout the entire show. Despite their deviation from the main narrative, what sets them apart is their capacity to encapsulate within a 60-minute timeframe, the emotional weight and depth usually found in an entire series. For instance, the episode featuring Bill and Frank in season 1 or the one focusing on Joel in season 2 – these episodes leave a lasting impression while also subtly advancing the overall storyline.

Finish Ellie’s Arc

The closing episode of The Last of Us season 2 left several questions unresolved, leading some viewers to critique its pacing as hasty. A point of disappointment for many was the resolution of Ellie’s storyline, which seemed incomplete, particularly since the final scene suggests she may have been shot by Abby. If the series had chosen to end with Ellie’s death, it would have left fans feeling unsatisfied. Not only would her quest for revenge have been cut short, but she would never have experienced the moral lessons that are central to the show’s message. Bella Ramsey Receives Too Much Hate

Similar to Kaitlyn Dever, Bella Ramsey has faced intense backlash due to her physical appearance not aligning with the character from the video game. Remarkably, people have been excessively critical and downright cruel about Ramsey’s attractiveness. However, it is important to note that Ramsey doesn’t warrant this negativity from internet trolls. Instead, they should be applauded for their outstanding portrayal of Ellie, particularly after Joel’s departure, as they have carried the show with remarkable grace. It is a challenging task for any young actor to step into the shoes of a beloved A-list actor, but Ramsey has managed this exceptionally well.

Develop the Relationship Between Dina and Ellie

In the second season of “The Last of Us,” Dina and Ellie were among the series’ most powerful elements, overlooking the criticisms from some review-bombers. This part not only aided Ellie in maturing as a character but also introduced one of the show’s most charming personalities, skillfully played by Isabela Merced. Season 2 established a romantic connection between Ellie and Dina, yet the season finale left us curious about where their relationship might head. While I don’t want it to be the main focus, I hope that season 3 offers some resolution about their current status following the events of the final episode.

Midway through season 2, we discover that Dina is carrying Jesse’s child, her former boyfriend. Upon hearing this news, Jesse became fiercely determined to survive so he could raise his baby with Dina. This tragic death leaves us wondering if Dina might harbor resentment towards Ellie for failing to protect Jesse. As a devoted movie enthusiast, I must say that Abby’s screen presence might have been limited in “The Last of Us” season 2, but her impact was undeniably significant. The cold-blooded murder of Joel transformed her character into a detestable antagonist that resonated deeply within the series. However, Abby isn’t merely a flat, one-dimensional villain; her quest for revenge provided a rational motive for her actions, transitioning her role from an easy-to-hate adversary to a more sympathetic protagonist.

In the forthcoming season, I yearn to uncover the layers beyond Abby’s relentless pursuit of vengeance. Although her portrayal was compelling, I am confident that the showrunners possess the potential to further deepen her character and make it even more captivating.

‘The Last of Us Part II’ Ended With Many Unanswered Questions

From the onset of Season 2, it was evident that the storyline for The Last of Us Part II would require another season to fully unfold, yet it still leaves us feeling unfulfilled. Most characters’ arcs seem incomplete, particularly given the cliffhanger ending they chose for the finale. While it’s intriguing when a series defies audience assumptions, The Last of Us Season 2 achieved this outcome in an incredibly unsatisfying fashion.

Isaac, a character from The Last of Us season 2, remains enigmatic and terrifying, with many questions left unanswered about his role in the story. While we learned that he was the leader of the Washington Liberation Front (WLF), there isn’t much known about him as a person beyond some military-related scenes. In season 3, I hope to see more exploration of his past as a Marine and how it shaped him into the character seen in the second season.

‘The Last of Us’ Has One of The Best Ensembles in Recent Years

The exceptional talents of Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are hard to overlook, but what truly shines in this show is its remarkable ensemble cast. Actors like Catherine O’Hara and Nick Offerman have each brought their A-game, ensuring there hasn’t been a single casting blunder. While some actors might not resemble their video game counterparts to the tee, the undeniable talent that graces our screens in this series is beyond question.

Show More Cordyceps

In the second season of “The Last of Us,” there was a strong emphasis on human drama that created several captivating scenes. Despite an abundance of sequences related to the cordyceps in the previous season, I’m eager for even more cordyceps-related content in the next installment. The various manifestations of these creatures were intriguing, but they didn’t get used enough in the last season. Given how much more terrifying and powerful they’ve become, it would be fantastic to see them play a larger role in the narrative moving forward.

The Show Has Entirely Ditched Ellie’s Immunization Sub-Plot

One of the most significant ethical dilemmas presented in season 1 was the possibility of Ellie sacrificing herself for a cure. This concept was one of the series’ most intriguing elements, but season 2 largely abandons this idea nearly completely. Although there’s a slim chance that this conflict may reappear in future seasons, its absence in the last season is disappointing and suggests that the show has been moving too quickly in its more recent installments.

Develop Abby’s Relationship with Owen

Beyond Abby, the other individuals in her circle were not afforded substantial development. Although the group catered to Abby and generated tension, they failed to reveal the unique traits of each character. Owen, a key figure, was merely hinted at in The Last of Us season 2. Despite his untimely demise at Ellie’s hands in the finale, there remains much more to Owen’s story that should be explored in season 3, particularly his connection with Abby. This aspect is crucial for understanding Abby’s complete character arc, and neglecting to delve into it in season 3 would be a significant misstep, potentially undermining Abby’s development.

Abby Should Stay the Villain

In a simpler and more conversational way: I think Isaac and cordyceps make great antagonists for “The Last of Us,” and I’m glad Abby is sticking around as a main villain. The next season might reveal more about Abby, making us empathize with her more, but I hope the show maintains her villainous character. It’s common for franchises to turn villains into sympathetic characters, so I’m hoping Abby won’t follow that pattern because she’s already left a big impression despite limited screen time.

A significant portion of Season 2 focused on hinting at future events, and one of these was the conflict between the WLF and the Seraphites – the war between them. While certain scenes depicted aspects of their war, viewers were not privy to all the reasons behind its significance to the narrative. Given how Season 2 concluded, it’s reasonable to assume that the next season will explore this war in greater depth. I’m eagerly anticipating a detailed portrayal of the war, as it plays a crucial role in shaping the overall storyline of the series.

The WLF/Seraphites War Touches on the Most Important Themes of the Series

One significant aspect that makes this war worth exploring further is its rich thematic resonance. On both sides of the conflict, there are compelling reasons for their actions, some noble and others questionable. The brutal nature of the fighting underscores themes of morality and healing from trauma. Characters grapple with traumatic events in various ways, either seeking to recover or reacting with anger that perpetuates more suffering. This central theme permeates the entire series, making it crucial to address it in the upcoming season.
