10 Shockingly Toxic Vampire Diaries Couples Fans Still Can’t Believe Lasted 8 Years
At the heart of the series lay vampires, werewolves, witches, and Originals, but there’s little argument that the romantic entanglements outshone all else on the screen. Given that TVD was a teen drama, the love affairs between its characters were the most captivating element in each episode, mainly because they were developed with both care and intrigue, ensuring viewers remained engrossed. Yet, not all of these relationships seemed logical.
The passionate relationships between Elena, Damon, Bonnie, Jeremy, Caroline, and Stefan might have been thrilling to follow, yet they were filled with harmful behaviors and disregard. These romantic connections captivated viewers, but in reality, they wouldn’t have lasted as long as portrayed. Various challenges stood in the way of these relationships, which the couples overcame, but they often felt implausible.
Stefan Disrespected Caroline Early On
In the series, there were other characters whom Stefan showed little interest in throughout. When she tried to approach him during the first season, he responded harshly, and when she confessed her feelings in Season 6, he did not return them. Remarkably, on the day of her mother’s funeral, he failed to support her, causing her to deactivate her empathetic abilities.
In due course, Stefan admitted to having feelings for Caroline and proposed, yet it appeared insincere from the start. There was no spark between them, and they might have been more compatible as friends. This notion became evident when Stefan opted to make a selfless sacrifice immediately after their wedding, leaving Caroline a widow without much consideration.
Alaric and Caroline Nearly Got Married
Caroline and Alaric became a couple when the Gemini twins, who had been magically placed in Caroline’s womb following Jo’s death, brought them together. Their relationship could have remained a close bond between a parent and a surrogate, but Alaric chose to make it romantic. For almost three years, he asked for Caroline’s hand in marriage, and they were engaged during that time.
It’s questionable that this couple was meant to be, given Alaric’s previous role as Caroline’s teacher and mentor in Mystic Falls. There was a considerable age difference between them, and their engagement seemed more a matter of duty for Caroline, considering her children. The relationship’s fundamentals appeared shaky from the start, and it prolonged longer than expected due to these underlying issues.
Stefan Should Have Left Elena a Long Time Ago
In my perspective as an ardent fan of “The Vampire Diaries“, Stefan and Elena from the early seasons hold a unique significance. I find myself drawn to Stefan due to his respectful, empathetic, and nurturing demeanor towards Elena. This is why many of us fans are partial to the idea of them together, even considering Stefan as the younger Salvatore. However, it’s crucial to remember that Elena didn’t always treat Stefan fairly, and their relationship was not one-sided in terms of emotion. Stefan’s feelings were just as important in their dynamic.
For approximately two years, they had an on-and-off relationship, but looking back, Stefan probably ought to have ended things long before. It was evident that Damon and Elena had mutual feelings, and Elena seemed to be growing fonder of his brother. Although the love triangle added suspense to the story, it was unjust for Stefan to remain in a situation like this, and it was also a significant breach of trust on Elena’s part to develop feelings for his sibling. The relationship should have concluded before Elena turned into a vampire.
Klaus and Caroline’s Moralities Were Too Different
Klaus and Caroline’s connection might not have been traditional, but it extended throughout “The Vampire Diaries,” “The Originals,” and “Legacies.” Despite the distance, their affection for each other remained constant. However, this bond was difficult to comprehend due to several factors, including its sudden onset and lack of clear explanations. This mysterious relationship has raised some eyebrows among fans.
To clarify, it wasn’t that Klaus suddenly transformed into a kind individual due to his desire to be deserving of Caroline. Instead, he persisted in terrorizing her loved ones and manipulating circumstances where she would require his aid. As an immensely powerful Original, Klaus skillfully maneuvered situations to bring Caroline closer to him. Understandably, it seems that Caroline should have effectively ended their relationship from the beginning.
Bonnie and Enzo Were In a Trauma Bond
Enzo’s demise on the series was one of the saddest, as it not only marked the end of his life but also signified the conclusion of his prolonged relationship with Bonnie. Fans deeply mourned him, but upon reflection, it appears that Enzo and Bonnie’s connection was a product of trauma bonding. This bond was forged when Enzo rescued Bonnie from the Armory, which was their attempt to reach her. Their time together in his cabin over an extended period ultimately led to their romantic involvement.
Nevertheless, it seemed improbable that Bonnie and Enzo’s romantic involvement stemmed from genuine feelings, given there were no signs of affection between them prior. Enzo harbored feelings for Lily Salvatore, while Bonnie was preoccupied with safeguarding Mystic Falls. In fact, she ruthlessly severed Enzo’s hand at the Armory to aid Damon. Therefore, their relationship, which lasted for quite some time before Enzo’s demise, came as a surprise to many.
Jeremy Never Valued Bonnie For Her Sacrifices
Bonnie struggled in matters of the heart, but her connection with Jeremy stood out as particularly distressing to observe. Time and again, Bonnie put her life and health at risk for Jeremy’s protection, yet he showed little concern for her well-being. When she passed away, instead of informing Elena and Caroline about it, he went on to be unfaithful to her, even with Anna’s spirit.
For more than a year, Bonnie and Jeremy were in a relationship, with a brief interruption, yet it was surprising how long it lasted. Not only did they lack romantic chemistry, but Jeremy consistently showed disrespect towards Bonnie through his actions. It would have been satisfying for the audience if there had been a scene where Bonnie firmly addressed Jeremy’s behavior, as this would have made their story more impactful.
Silas and Amara Lasted Centuries Even Without Each Other
In the initial stages, the event involving Silas was crucial in shaping the narrative of “The Vampire Diaries”. By deceptively consuming the immortality elixir alongside his handmaiden Amara, Silas betrayed Qetsiyah, setting into motion the plot threads concerning immortality, doppelgängers, and the Other Side. Despite millennia-long separation, Qetsiyah’s efforts to keep Silas and Amara apart were unsuccessful due to their enduring love for each other.
In essence, their relationship was built around the thrill of it being forbidden, rather than genuine affection. Silas and Amara didn’t truly feel love for each other, but found excitement in keeping their affair secret. By the time Silas reappeared and they could finally meet face-to-face, Amara no longer harbored romantic feelings for him and yearned for tranquility instead. This relationship seemed illogical, and Silas’ unwavering devotion appeared to be without basis.
Tyler Behaved Poorly With Caroline Throughout Their Relationship
It’s often perceived that Caroline and Tyler have a more romantic relationship compared to Caroline and Klaus, but their bond was almost equally troubled. While Caroline risked her life to transform Tyler into a werewolf, he didn’t think twice about helping Jules capture and torment Caroline when she arrived in town. Moreover, his thirst for revenge against Klaus overshadowed his feelings for Caroline, causing him to neglect her entirely during that time.
Tyler and Caroline’s relationship endured despite spending most of their time apart due to Klaus’ exile of Tyler. This was surprising given the situation. Instead of balancing his time between Caroline and Klaus, Tyler prioritized Klaus in their relationship. It didn’t seem strange when Caroline found herself drawn to Klaus after he left her, causing viewers to ponder the authenticity of their connection.
Jeremy and Anna Were Not Healthy For Each Other
Jeremy’s bond with Anna was undeniably contentious within the series, and it wasn’t without cause. During her lifetime, Jeremy consumed Anna’s blood and even attempted suicide – behaviors that were far from typical or healthy for a teenager. After his resurrection and acquisition of the ability to see spirits, he opted to engage in a supernatural romance with Anna’s ghost.
It’s clear there was a strong bond between these two characters, primarily due to their shared age group, but their romantic storyline became less engaging over time. Introducing Jeremy with a ghost character seemed too implausible, even for the supernatural world of ‘The Vampire Diaries.’ This love story should have concluded with Anna’s demise, as anything beyond that appeared overly fantastical. The relationship between Bonnie and Jeremy would have been better off ending at that point.
Damon and Elena Were Genuinely Very Toxic
In the popular series “The Vampire Diaries”, it’s clear that Damon and Elena were undeniably the most adored couple. However, their relationship was also extremely harmful. Their connection was fueled by excitement, intensity, and novel experiences they brought into each other’s lives. Yet, from the beginning, Damon treated Elena poorly. He went as far as snapping Jeremy’s neck when she didn’t reciprocate his feelings, forced her to drink his blood against her will, and inflicted pain on her in numerous ways before they eventually fell in love.
Initially, Elena had to compromise her personal beliefs to embrace Damon, who frequently urged her to suppress her humanity and consume humans – a practice contrary to her moral compass. Their relationship, marked by instability, was far from healthy. The idea of them being destined for each other seemed illogical, especially considering their volatile dynamics. Moreover, it didn’t align with Damon’s past actions and character evolution that he could transition into a human and peacefully coexist with Elena forever.
