Some people enjoy TV dramas for the excitement, action, or satisfying resolutions. But for many, the real draw is finding out what surprising plot twists the writers will introduce next.
Few TV genres are as good at surprising audiences as police and crime dramas, where the lines between hunter and hunted often blur. Some of these shows have delivered truly unforgettable twists that have made them timeless classics.
Love’s True Nature Is Revealed On You
The show, initially cancelled by Lifetime after its first season, was revived. It stars Penn Badgley, known from Gossip Girl, as Joe Goldberg, a man who develops intensely obsessive relationships with the women he encounters.
I was hooked in the second season when Joe met Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti)! She seemed like the perfect match, and they even got married in season three. But honestly, it was a huge twist to find out she had a really dark side too – she wasn’t as innocent as we all thought! Turns out, she and Joe were more alike than anyone knew.
The Truth Behind Elliott’s Fate On Mr. Robot
The show Mr. Robot, created by Sam Esmail, is a thrilling crime drama that keeps audiences guessing. A key element of this is its main character, Elliott Alderson, played by Emmy winner Rami Malek, who often misleads viewers as an unreliable storyteller. A particularly notable instance of this deception happens in the seventh episode of the show’s second season.
During a therapy session, it’s revealed that the hacker’s life hasn’t been what viewers have seen on Mr. Robot. In fact, the character Elliot has been imagining everything that’s happened in the series so far while incarcerated.
Vic Kills Terry On The Shield
Typically, TV crime dramas don’t reveal a main character is actually a corrupt officer until much later in the series. But with The Shield, creator Shawn Ryan immediately introduced that kind of shocking twist.
The acclaimed FX police drama immediately established its willingness to shock viewers, doing so right in the first episode. The episode concluded with Detective Vic Mackey (Michael Chiklis) intentionally killing Terry Crowley (Reed Diamond), a federal informant.
Something Is Wrong With Agent Cooper On Twin Peaks
David Lynch, the late filmmaker known for his strange and puzzling stories, became a captivating and mysterious figure in the world of cinema. He brought this unique style to television in the early 1990s as the co-creator of the popular series, Twin Peaks.
The first two seasons of the drama ended on CBS with a shocking twist: Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) appeared to return from a mysterious, dangerous place called the Black Lodge, but it was actually an evil copy of him. As the ghost of Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) foreshadowed in that same episode, the mystery wouldn’t be solved for another 25 years, when the story continued as an 18-part miniseries on Showtime.
Junior Mistakes Tony For An Old Enemy On The Sopranos
Classic gangster films, like The Godfather and Goodfellas, are known for their impressive visuals and building tension, but they don’t often rely on unexpected twists to shock viewers – something TV shows about the mafia, such as The Sopranos, do frequently. A prime example is the start of Season 6 of The Sopranos, where Tony Soprano is preparing a meal for his uncle Junior when a sudden burst of violence changes everything.
Due to his dementia, Junior mistakenly believes his nephew is Gennaro Malanga, a man who robbed him in the past. He shoots his nephew. Tony tries to call for help but collapses and falls into a coma. While comatose, in the next episode, he experiences vivid dreams of a life where he avoided a life of crime.
The Reaper Is Unveiled On Criminal Minds
As a longtime fan of crime dramas, I was really hooked by the latest season of Criminal Minds, which came back as Criminal Minds: Evolution in 2022. It was full of shocking twists and some seriously compelling bad guys. One villain, in particular, really stood out – they originally just called him The Reaper, and he was instantly terrifying.
At the start of the FBI’s investigation into the mysterious criminal, George Foyet (C. Thomas Howell) appeared to be the only person who had survived his attacks. However, investigators soon discovered that Foyet wasn’t a survivor at all – he was the serial killer, known as The Reaper.
Hilde Eriksen’s True Identity On Death And Other Details
Despite being based on the works of Agatha Christie, this show didn’t gain enough viewers and was canceled by Hulu after just one season. It follows Imogene Scott, played by Violett Beane, who joins forces with Rufus Cotesworth (Mandy Patinkin), a seasoned detective haunted by his failure to solve her mother’s murder. Together, they investigate a mysterious death that occurs aboard a luxurious cruise ship.
A German Interpol agent, Hilde Eriksen (Linda Emond), unexpectedly joins the investigation aboard the ship, immediately trying to take control. Imogene quickly becomes suspicious of Hilde’s true intentions, and her suspicions prove correct in a shocking discovery: Hilde is actually Imogene’s mother, Kira, who everyone believed had died years ago – a death Imogene herself witnessed.
Kenard Kills Omar On The Wire
David Simon’s acclaimed series, The Wire, is known for its surprising twists, especially when characters are killed off. But few deaths in television history have resonated as strongly as that of Omar Little on the HBO show.
Most viewers expected Omar, the famous Baltimore thief, to be defeated in a final confrontation with the powerful Marlo Stanfield (Jamie Hector). However, it was actually one of Marlo’s younger crew members, Kenard (Thuliso Dingwall), who ultimately shot and killed Omar.
Dexter’s Worst Nightmare Comes True
Okay, so Dexter, the Showtime series based on Jeff Lindsay’s books, really flipped the serial killer genre on its head. Instead of being horrified by the killer, you actually found yourself rooting for him! That’s because Dexter only targeted truly awful people, and the show made him surprisingly sympathetic. A huge part of the tension came from watching him desperately try to balance his normal life as a blood spatter analyst with his, shall we say, extracurricular activities. Honestly, for a lot of viewers – myself included – the show hit its absolute best during those seasons where that double life was really being stretched to the limit.
The fourth season of Dexter ended with a shocking and unforgettable scene. Dexter Morgan (played by Michael C. Hall) returned home after killing the Trinity Killer (John Lithgow, who won an Emmy for the role) only to discover it was too late to save his wife, Rita (Julie Benz). He found her body in the bathtub, with their baby son, Harrison, sitting nearby in a pool of blood – a devastating moment that deeply impacted viewers.
Walt’s Grim Plan To Stop Gus On Breaking Bad
One of the most compelling aspects of Vince Gilligan’s Breaking Bad was watching how far Walter White (Bryan Cranston), a former chemistry teacher turned drug kingpin, would go to protect his criminal life, stay safe, and become a powerful figure in the drug world. The show’s Season 4 finale shocked both critics and viewers by revealing the full extent of his cold-heartedness.
Previously, Jesse Pinkman agreed to help Walt get rid of their ruthless boss, Gus Fring, believing Gus had poisoned the young son of Jesse’s girlfriend. But the season finale revealed Walt was actually responsible for making the boy sick, manipulating Jesse into helping him kill Gus. This decision would later cause major problems for Walt.
