10 Power Rangers Who Should’ve Been the Leaders Instead of the Red Ranger
This franchise heavily relies on its established themes. For instance, it’s been a 30-year practice for the Red Ranger to head their team. Yet, it isn’t necessarily the best option every time. Each Power Rangers squad has had impressive Red Rangers, but in some cases, they could have a truly exceptional leader.
Many Rangers, who should have been leaders or could have taken a different color on their team, might have performed superior roles than their current leaders. Regrettably, these capable individuals never had the opportunity to lead due to factors beyond their control, such as destiny and lore.
Eric Myers Was a Better Soldier & Leader Than Wes Collins
Power Rangers Time Force
As a movie reviewer, I must say that when the Time Force Rangers found themselves stranded in the 2000s without their Red Ranger, they embarked on a quest to find a worthy successor – an individual similar to Alex Drake. Their search eventually led them to bestow the morpher upon Wes Collins. Fast forward a few months, and Eric Myers, a Silver Guardian, stumbled upon the Quantum Morpher, transforming him into the Quantum Ranger, a hero whose color code just so happens to be red.
As a devoted film enthusiast, I must admit that the actual commander of the Time Force Rangers is indeed someone else. However, during combat scenarios, the Red Ranger consistently dominates the spotlight, particularly in formation. If there was ever a candidate for this role, it should have been Eric. He already possessed the discipline and leadership skills of a seasoned troop leader, whereas Wes had to acquire those qualities from the ground up.
Jake Holling Had Access to Far More Power Than Troy Burrows
Power Rangers Megaforce and Power Rangers Super Megaforce
The Megaforce and Super Megaforce Ranger teams are exceptional within the Power Rangers franchise as they can draw upon the power of previous generations of Power Rangers. Based on their team color, they gain access to weapons and abilities once exclusive to Legacy Rangers. For instance, Jake Hollings, who is both Megaforce Black and Super Megaforce Green, has the ability to utilize Tommy Oliver’s toolkit.
In a scenario where the concept of power set is applied, it could be argued that Jake should have been the team leader due to his vast potential. Although his comical antics may not initially suggest leadership qualities, he demonstrated significant growth throughout the series. Assuming the leadership role might have further fostered maturity in him.
Billy Cranston’s Brain Is the Greatest Mighty Morphin Weapon
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
Billy Cranston, also known as the Mighty Morphin Blue Ranger, is often recognized for his crucial role in the team. On numerous occasions, it was his intelligence that saved their day, but he was never offered a leading position – even post the special series “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always”. Instead, Zack took on that role.
It’s likely that the Morphin Grid didn’t select Billy as the Red Ranger due to his initial shyness and insecurity when they embarked on their heroic journey. However, over time, he blossomed into one of the finest Rangers, proving to fans that his potential was always abundant; he simply needed an opportunity to shine.
Maya Knew Everything There Was to Know About Mirinoi’s Lore
Power Rangers Lost Galaxy
1999 saw Maya, an explorer on the lunar surface, cross paths with her future comrades: Kai Chen, Damon Henderson, Kendrix Morgan, and Mike and Leo Corbett – all Terra Venture residents. As these five individuals found themselves pursued by the Stingwingers, they stumbled upon the Quasar Sabers, thus transforming into the Lost Galaxy Rangers. Maya drew her yellow saber, assuming the role of the Yellow Galaxy Ranger.
As a dedicated cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but ponder over the choice of characters in the Power Rangers series. While Leo made an excellent leader, it struck me that Maya, given her profound connection to the Scorpius conflict, would have been an exceptional Red Ranger. You see, she was the one who had been battling Scorpius’ senseless war since childhood. This unique perspective, coupled with her empathic abilities, could have transformed Maya into a truly compassionate and intuitive leader, guiding them not just with strategy, but also with understanding and empathy.
Aiyon Was Zayto’s Second-In-Command
Power Rangers Dino Fury
65 million years ago, Aiyon and Zayto were members of the Knights of Rafkon on their home planet. They battled together for a period before entering stasis post-fight against the Sporix Beast. Later, they resumed their team on Earth as the Dino Fury Rangers, with Zayto taking charge until his heroic sacrifice paved the way for a new squad: the Cosmic Fury Rangers. In contrast to Zayto, it was Amelia, the previous Dino Fury Pink Ranger, who led them this time.
Amelia performed exceptionally well in her role as a Red Ranger, being one of the earliest female Red Rangers. She truly lived up to the title’s prestige. In fact, numerous fans have expressed a desire for her return due to the brevity of her leading stint. Yet, there was a lot of speculation surrounding how she came to be the Red Ranger, as Aiyon, a seasoned combatant, was present.
Kira Ford Was Definitely Underestimated
Power Rangers Dino Thunder
Among Yellow Rangers, Kira Ford from Dino Thunder stands out as a widely admired heroine within the franchise. Yet, upon rewatching the show, it’s clear that she was often underestimated by both villains and her fellow team members. However, in truth, Kira possessed immense power. Her Ptera-Scream ability, among all the Dino Thunder Rangers, proved to be one of the most valuable tools.
Moreover, she was remarkably sharp and insightful when devising strategies. Regrettably, she wasn’t given a thought for the role of the Red Ranger – probably due to the color/gender biases in place within the franchise at that time. Naturally, once Tommy became part of the team, it was clear he would be the true leader, so her chances were slim.
Sky Tate Worked Hard For the Role
Power Rangers S.P.D.
In the series Power Rangers: S.P.D., Jack Landors initially appeared to be a criminal, but he harbored a noble spirit all along. This explanation aligns with Doggie’s decision to appoint him as the Red Ranger. However, it was somewhat unjust for his fellow rangers who had been striving for that role. Sky Tate, in particular, seemed particularly affected by this turn of events.
Originally, the daring Red Ranger’s son, Sky, had dedicated his entire life to achieving the same title. He was almost there until Jack emerged on the scene. To be fair, Sky inadvertently squandered his opportunity due to overconfidence, but it was merely a misstep. In reality, he was far better equipped than Jack for the position.
Taylor Earhart Was Supposed to Be a Leader
Power Rangers Wild Force
Prior to Cole Evans assuming the role of Red Ranger in the Wild Force Rangers, it was originally planned that Taylor Earhardt, the Yellow Ranger, would serve as the team’s leader. This wasn’t a hasty choice made by Princess Shayla but a well-thought-out one because Taylor was particularly suited for the position. Even with Cole joining the team, Taylor remained the most qualified for the leadership role.
As a passionate moviegoer, I’d rephrase it like this: With years of training behind me from the Air Force, my methodical approach to tasks makes me an effective leader. If only I had been given the opportunity, I would have transformed the Wild Force Rangers into a finely tuned team, operating smoothly and efficiently.
Cam Watanabe Is One of the Most Complete Warriors In the Franchise
Power Rangers Ninja Storm
Initially, Cameron Watanabe didn’t join the team in Power Rangers: Ninja Storm. Instead, he functioned as their tech-savvy ally, often seen working behind the screen. Later on, he received the Samurai Amulet, a powerful artifact that transformed him into the Green Samurai Ranger.
This metamorphosis merely magnified Cam into an even more valuable resource for the team. He was already the sharpest mind in the group, but as the Samurai Ranger, he also transformed into one of the most formidable fighters. Ironically, he couldn’t shake off the “chair guy” label, thus never being granted a main role. It’s unfortunate, for he would have excelled brilliantly as a leader due to his intellect and might.
Adam Park’s Chance to Lead a Team Came Too Late
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Power Rangers Zeo, and Power Rangers Turbo
As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I must confess that Adam’s tenure in the Power Rangers universe is nothing short of impressive, spanning across multiple iterations, from the Black Ranger to the Green Zeo Ranger and ultimately the first Green Turbo Ranger. His journey mirrors that of legends like Jason and Tommy, but somehow, Adam’s brilliance didn’t quite reach the same dazzling heights as his fellow Rangers.
Placed on three distinct teams, it’s hard not to wonder why Adam wasn’t entrusted with leading one of these teams, particularly the Turbo team, given his maturity and experience. It seems that Adam’s potential was left somewhat underutilized within the franchise, a missed opportunity that leaves fans like me yearning for more from this underrated hero.
It took Adam over a decade to have an opportunity to head a team, which was during “Power Rangers: Operation Overdrive.” Here, he commanded the Retro Rangers, even though his leadership role was brief, it demonstrated his capabilities. Regrettably, at that stage in the franchise, his time had already come and gone.
