Some of these relationships were met with criticism because they lacked chemistry or appeared unexpectedly without proper context, as seen in various pairings within Power Rangers. Certain romantic connections in the series left fans scratching their heads due to their illogical nature.

You see, their relationship felt like an unexpected twist from the comics, one that wasn’t fully fleshed out on-screen. Despite their potential chemistry, they seldom shared intimate moments in the actual show.

While some fans might have welcomed this romantic pairing in the comics, many others found it to be a sudden development without proper buildup. If their relationship had been organically developed within the series, it could have added depth and intrigue to both characters, as they seemed well-suited for each other based on their individual traits.

Cassie and the Phantom Ranger’s Plot Went Unresolved

In the series Power Rangers Turbo, a mysterious character named Phantom Ranger was presented as hailing from the planet Eltar. From his debut, it seemed that he and Pink Ranger Cassie shared some connection, with only her initially perceiving him. However, their relationship unfortunately never developed further.

In the series, although the dynamic between Cassie and the Phantom Ranger could have made for an intriguing narrative, it fell short by not delving deeper into their unique bond, causing some viewers to feel puzzled. The question of why Cassie was the sole ranger capable of identifying him remained unanswered. Furthermore, the second season of Turbo seemed to steer clear of romantic subplots for the most part. Some spectators even suggested that Cassie would have had a stronger connection with the Red Ranger T.J., as they shared a more developed bond compared to her relationship with the Phantom Ranger, who was only ever seen in his suit.

Joel and Miss Fairweather Felt One-Sided

For certain spectators, it was quite unexpected that Fairweather and Joel ended up together in the season finale, considering their relationship appeared heavily one-sided throughout the series. Although there were signs of Fairweather returning Joel’s affection, their union seemed to convey an undesirable message as Joel’s persistent attempts towards Fairweather ultimately succeeded, even though she had previously turned him down several times.

Nate and Zoey Had No Romantic Chemistry

This Beast Morphers Duo Felt More Like Siblings

In my opinion, the latest Power Rangers series, Beast Morphers, really stepped up its game when it came to portraying romantic relationships compared to the previous Saban Era. For instance, the dynamic between Yellow Ranger Zoey and Gold Ranger Nate was a bit of a bumpy ride at first. You see, Nate initially joins the team as their tech guru, a child prodigy who crafted the Rangers’ morphers. But things take an interesting turn when he transforms into the Gold Ranger. Over the course of their partnership, Zoey and Nate gradually grow closer to each other.

Even though viewers were thrilled to witness a matured romance once more, it seemed that Zoey and Nate lacked the romantic spark. Instead, their bond appeared more akin to a close-knit sibling relationship, with Nate coming off as the younger sibling despite sharing the same age as Zoey. This was particularly evident when compared to Ravi and Roxy’s relationship from the Blue Ranger team.

Nick and Madison Was Heavily Underwritten

The Show Forgot About This Romance After the First Episode

During the Disney period of Power Rangers, they typically handled romantic relationships quite well, but the connection between the Blue Ranger, Madison, and her team from Power Rangers Mystic Force was sadly underexplored. The initial episode subtly suggested a romantic tie between them, as evidenced by a thoughtfully penned private conversation between Madison and Nick.

Throughout the remainder of the series, there were no romantic moments between the two characters. This gave the impression that the writers had inadvertently overlooked the romantic aspect, only revisiting it during the finale when they appeared to be a couple. It was noticeable that their personalities didn’t seem well-suited, as Nick seemed to have a better connection with Pink Ranger Vida, although this was more of a friendly bond rather than a romantic one.

Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd’s Romance Had an Odd Beginning

The Show Never Addressed the Love Potion Again

Amongst Power Rangers villains, Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd are two of the most recognized and adored by fans, with Rita being the chief antagonist in Mighty Morphin’ Season 1 and Lord Zedd in Season 2. It was inevitable that these two would unite eventually. However, what took many fans aback was discovering that the two had developed a romantic relationship.

The enigma surrounding their relationship lies in the fact that it was initiated when Rita used a love potion on Zedd. Yet, the love potion is not mentioned again, leading many fans to speculate that the potion’s effect had faded, but Zedd’s feelings continued. However, the show fails to confirm this hypothesis, leaving it unclear and disappointing for fans who have taken a liking to their pairing.

Trini and Richie’s Subplot Went Nowhere

Richie Disappeared After a Few Episodes

In the second season of Power Rangers Mighty Morphin’, a new character named Richie was introduced as a high school student in Angel Grove and a friend of the Rangers. It seemed that Trini had feelings for Richie romantically, but this storyline didn’t develop further. Fans found it puzzling because Richie didn’t have a well-defined personality beyond being a love interest for Trini.

Initially, Richie was proposed as a potential character for the enigmatic figure of the new White Ranger; however, since Tommy was swiftly unveiled following his introduction, Richie’s involvement in the mystery seemed unnecessary. This becomes apparent by the fact that Richie vanished from the series shortly after Tommy joined the team as the White Ranger, thereby leaving Trini’s storyline incomplete.

Mike and Emily Came Out of Nowhere

This Samurai Couple Confused Fans

Previously mentioned, the New Saban Era of Power Rangers fell short in developing romantic storylines. One such instance can be found in Power Rangers Samurai, focusing on the relationship between Green Ranger Mike and Yellow Ranger Emily. In the final episode of Samurai, as the Rangers parted ways, it was Mike who chose to depart with Emily, their hands entwined.

Fans were caught off guard by the suddenness of their romantic resolution for Mike and Emily, as there had been few hints of a budding relationship between them earlier on. On the other hand, it seemed more likely that Kevin, the Blue Ranger, and Mia, the Pink Ranger, would end up together in the finale, given the stronger indications of a romantic connection between them throughout the series.

Gia Randomly Reciprocated Jake’s Feelings in the Finale

Gia Rejected Jake Multiple Times Throughout Megaforce

In the New Saban Era, poor handling of romantic storylines was evident in shows like Power Rangers Megaforce and Power Rangers Super Megaforce. Similar to the dynamic between Joel and Fairweather in Lightspeed Rescue, Jake and Gia from Megaforce exhibited a one-sided romance where Jake persistently tried to win over Gia, who rarely reciprocated his feelings.

However, this development was questionable given that Gia’s character was portrayed as fiercely independent and seemingly unresponsive to Jake’s affections.

Tommy and Kat Felt Like a Cheap Copy

Fans Preferred Tommy With Kimberly

Since the bond between Tommy and Kimberly, the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers duo, was deeply cherished, it wasn’t unexpected that fans might not have warmly embraced his subsequent relationship with Kat Hillard. Following Kimberly’s departure from the series, her role was taken over by Kat, which led to a romantic development between Tommy and Kat in Power Rangers Zeo, as indicated by a break-up letter Kim sent him.

Fans were deeply saddened when Tommy and Kim’s relationship, which had been nurtured over many years, suddenly ended off-screen, leading to a sense of betrayal. Many felt that Tommy’s new romance with Kat was just a poor imitation. It’s quite strange, given that it appears as though Tommy eventually married Kat (even though Kim appeared to be back in Angel Grove by the time of Once & Always), and “Dimensions and Danger” hinted at them having a son together. In fact, it was confirmed in Once & Always that Kat is indeed his mother.
