As a huge cinema fan, I’ve always been fascinated by sci-fi Westerns. What I love about them is how they take the classic Western themes and settings – think cowboys, frontier towns, that whole vibe – and then throw in a futuristic twist, like advanced technology or even aliens! It’s not as new a concept as you might think, though. Believe it or not, stories combining the Wild West with futuristic ideas go all the way back to the 1800s. A lot of people point to a book called The Steam Man of the Prairie from 1868, written by Edward S. Ellis, as the very first popular example. It’s about cowboys…and a man powered by steam! Pretty cool, right?
Science fiction Westerns have appeared in movies and TV for decades, with examples like The Valley of Gwangi and Timerider: The Adventures of Lyle Swann. But some of the best combinations of these genres are found on television. While the plots can be quite unusual, these shows are consistently fun to watch and generally feature high-quality production.
‘Defiance’ (2013 – 2015)

Syfy
Ever seen a show with aliens who have surprisingly normal family moments – like bathing together? That’s just one of the things you’ll find in Defiance. This often-overlooked sci-fi series, set in 2046, blends political intrigue, conflict between different species, and action. The story takes place in Defiance, a city built on the remains of St. Louis, and centers around Joshua Nolan, his adopted alien daughter, and the city’s mayor, Amanda Rosewater, as they navigate life in a world occupied by aliens after a global catastrophe.
This show is a stunning experience for all the senses, with beautiful visuals, a captivating alien world, and a compelling story about family, staying alive, and upholding the law. The actors have incredible chemistry, hinting at a deep, underlying connection. It expertly blends classic Western elements with futuristic technology and action, delivering exactly what fans of both genres would expect.
‘The Wild Wild West’ (1965 – 1969)

CBS
I recently revisited The Wild Wild West, and it’s fascinating to remember this show premiered when spy shows were all the rage. It was basically a smart move to combine that popularity with the Western format – think James Bond, but with horses! Instead of the typical cowboys, we follow Secret Service agents James West and Artemus Gordon. What really makes it work is the show’s clever blend of a simple, old-fashioned setting with wildly imaginative, futuristic technology inspired by Jules Verne. Each episode features them racing to stop threats to the President and the country, and it’s a fun ride.
Okay, so they made a Wild Wild West movie with Will Smith back in the ’90s, but honestly, skip it. Seriously, forget you ever saw it! You need to check out the original TV show. It’s a surprisingly early example of what we now call steampunk, and it’s fantastic. The writing was really smart for its time, and the cast was amazing – Michael Dunn, in particular, was brilliant as the villain. It’s a really clever story about the clash between duty and political maneuvering, and I think it holds up better than a lot of stuff being made today.
‘Killjoys’ (2015 – 2019)

Syfy
Following the idea that good things come in threes, the show Killjoys doesn’t offer just one talented bounty hunter – it features three: Dutch, John, and D’avin. But instead of the Old West, these heroes work in a star system called the Quad, which consists of four planets and a moon. Their job is to track down criminals and recover stolen goods.
I don’t focus on emotions, I make practical evaluations – which sometimes happen to involve tears. The show Killjoys is full of great lines, and the strong connection between its main characters will make you wish your own friends were closer. It’s a beautiful, but deeply sad show, and one of the most meaningful from the 2010s, highlighting the importance of friendship and doing what’s right. Definitely give it a watch if you have the chance.
‘The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.’ (1993 – 1994)
Imagine Old West bounty hunters with modern gadgets – it would make their job a lot easier! That’s the premise of The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr., where Brisco has access to things like rockets and diving suits. The story kicks off when powerful business leaders hire him to hunt down a notorious outlaw and his crew, and from there, it’s a wild ride filled with adventure.
Bruce Campbell is a huge reason why this show works so well. He first gained attention with his memorable role in the horror-comedy film Evil Dead, but The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. really showcased his talent as a versatile actor, comfortable in both television and movies. He thrived in this clever, funny, and adventurous series full of complex characters and ongoing storylines. The show’s constant sense of danger clearly draws inspiration from the Indiana Jones films, and feels like a natural extension of the creators’ earlier work.
‘Wynonna Earp’ (2016 – 2021)
Many movies have been made about Wyatt Earp, and even though Tombstone is popular, it’s not necessarily the best. But that’s a discussion for another time. Wynonna Earp follows Wyatt Earp’s great-great-granddaughter as she returns to her hometown of Purgatory, near the Canadian Rockies, to fight revenants – the dangerous, reborn outlaws that Wyatt once defeated. The show blends supernatural elements with modern technology.
Inspired by the comic books, Wynonna Earp was a breakout show for creator Emily Andras, building on her experience as a writer for other series. With stunning visuals of the rugged landscape – think wide-open plains and rocky cliffs – and a complex story about family, history, and a life outside the law, Wynonna Earp is considered one of Canada’s most original and emotionally resonant shows in recent years.
‘Outer Range’ (2022 – 2024)

Prime Video
The new show Outer Range, like many modern Westerns, centers around a struggle for land and protecting a family’s heritage. Royal Abbott, a Wyoming rancher determined to keep his land, finds a strange, incredibly deep hole on his property. He wonders where it might go, and after reaching into it, he starts experiencing visions of the future. This leads him to question what’s going on.
Despite a minimalist approach, Outer Range is a powerful show, largely due to its strong acting, especially from Tom Pelphrey who plays the Abbott family’s older son. The season one finale is unforgettable – you won’t believe the sight of ancient bison bursting from a mysterious hole! The person who came up with that deserves a major deal in Hollywood. And be sure to keep watching – season two is even better than the first!
‘Firefly’ (2002 – 2003)

Fox
Firefly cleverly blends the excitement of space adventures with the feel of classic Westerns. The show stands out for its realistic and colorful dialogue, ranging from witty banter to strong language, and its well-developed characters. Set in the year 2517, the series centers on the crew of the spaceship Serenity as they try to survive in a future dominated by just two major powers: the United States and China.
With global uncertainty on the rise, Joss Whedon’s insightful and gripping show feels particularly timely. It explores the tension between wanting to believe in a better world and the desire for simpler, more comfortable times. The show’s blend of Western and Asian influences is also a welcome and forward-thinking touch. Above all, it’s consistently exciting and visually stunning – it really deserved to be as popular and influential as Star Trek.
‘Westworld’ (2016 – 2022)

HBO
The show Westworld, inspired by the classic 1970s movie, centers around a high-tech amusement park designed like the Wild West. The park is filled with lifelike androids, called “hosts,” who fulfill the desires of wealthy visitors. But when a guest makes a reckless decision, it sets off a series of events that makes everyone question what’s happening and how things are run.
This show stands out thanks to its clever storyline, thought-provoking look at artificial intelligence, and stunning visuals – it’s no surprise it received 54 Emmy nominations! Anthony Hopkins gives a fantastic performance as Dr. Robert Ford, the park’s unconventional co-founder whose ideas are questioned by those who get to know him. However, the show’s strength isn’t just Hopkins; Thandiwe Newton and Jesse Wright deliver performances that will definitely make the experience worthwhile.
‘The Mandalorian’ (2019 – 2023)

Lucasfilm
It takes a good understanding of the entire Star Wars universe to fully appreciate its TV shows, and The Mandalorian is one of the best examples. This first live-action Star Wars series follows Din Djarin, a bounty hunter haunted by his past, whose peaceful life is turned upside down when he must protect Grogu (known affectionately as Baby Yoda) from the evil remnants of the Empire.

The show masterfully balances calm, controlled moments with explosive action, creating a captivating look at chaos in space. While packed with incredible action sequences, the teamwork between Din and IG-11 during their circular gunfight is particularly unforgettable. It’s frustrating that there are only three seasons, but thankfully, a continuation movie is planned.
‘Fallout’ (2024 – present)
After a long wait, the highly anticipated Fallout video game adaptation is here, and fans are thrilled! The show is set 200 years after a nuclear war forces people to live in underground shelters called Vaults. It centers on Lucy MacLean, who leaves the safety of her Vault to search for her missing father. Her journey becomes much more complicated when she crosses paths with Cooper Howard, also known as The Ghoul—a charismatic actor turned bounty hunter.
This sci-fi story starts with a lot of action, but quickly settles into a more thoughtful pace as connections form between the characters. Expect some surprising twists and turns along the way. Walton Goggins delivers a compelling performance, expertly portraying a character who is both likable and mysterious, and the film features impressive visual effects.
