10 new comic books you need to read this week (and one classic pick too)

As a long-time comic book enthusiast with a soft spot for team dynamics and intergalactic battles, I can’t help but feel a pang of anticipation as Formarak and Solila’s journey seems to be taking a turn. Having witnessed many friendships tested and forged in the heat of battle, I find myself hopeful that Darak might be able to sway Solila with his words or actions. After all, the bond between allies is often what makes the difference between victory and defeat.

This week, X-Men comic books took center stage among new releases, but they’re not the only titles worth reading. Additionally, there are tie-ins to the DC Comics event “Absolute Power”, a new Universal Monster mini-series from Skybound/Image Comics, and many more interesting issues to explore.

Let’s get right into the pick-of-the-week and end with an older comic to read.

NYX (pick of the week)

  • Writers: Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing
  • Artist: Francesco Mortarino

In simpler terms, an unidentified individual known as “Local” is abducting mutants who have been overlooked in New York City, and Wolverine (Laura Kinney) is pursuing this criminal. The identity of “Local,” their intentions, and whether these kidnapped mutants originate from the new Krakoa remain unclear at this point.

Green Arrow No. 15

  • Writer: Joshua Williamson
  • Artist:  Amancay Nahuelpan

In the closing moments of issue 2 of “Absolute Power”, Oliver Queen discovers a device for time travel that could aid him in opposing Amanda Waller. Could this artifact play a role in “Green Arrow” issue 15? Simultaneously, Professor Ivo is rescued by one of Amanda Waller’s associates named Bright. We shall observe if Oliver’s previous teammates can manage to reach Ivo before he falls under Bright’s control.

Something is Killing the Children #40

  • Writer: James Tynion IV
  • Artist: Werther Dell’Edera

Prior to moving forward into the current timeline, the comic book series Something is Killing the Children will release one more issue from its past, which will serve as a prequel leading up to Issue No. 0. Events taking place in Issue No. 40 may have an impact on the ongoing narrative of the present.

Universal Monsters: Frankenstein

  • Writer: Michael Walsh
  • Artist: Michael Walsh

As a die-hard fan, I found it an effortless choice to include “Universal Monsters: Frankenstein” in our list. With Skybound’s remarkable work on their Universal Monster comic books, such as “Dracula” and “The Creature from the Black Lagoon Lives!”, I’m confident that this addition will be another resounding success.

Absolute Power: Origins No. 2

  • Writer: John Ridley
  • Artist: Alitha Martinez

In this story, Amanda Waller coerced a powerful politician for influence. The consequences of her actions are now unfolding, leading us to the formation of an elite team – unofficially known as the Suicide Squad or Task Force X.

Void Rivals No. 12

  • Writer: Robert Kirkman
  • Artist: Lorenzo De Felici

For some time now, Darak and Solila have been loyal partners. However, it seems this partnership might be coming to an end as Solila expresses a desire for them to part ways. Will Darak manage to convince her to keep moving forward together on their journey, or will they go their separate paths?

Aliens vs. Avengers No. 1 (of 4)

  • Writer: Jonathan Hickman
  • Artist: Esad Ribic

This promises to be an absolute blast for four consecutive issues! The epic clash between Aliens and the Avengers is on the cards, with a hint that the Aliens themselves will become Avenger-like. To top it off, it’s penned by the talented Jonathan Hickman. What else could you ask for?

X-Men No. 3

  • Writer: Jed MacKay
  • Artist: Ryan Stegman

We’ll explore how the X-Men came to have their current headquarters. It’s a valid question. Originally, the building belonged to Orchis. However, it seems that the X-Men might not realize how vulnerable their new base truly is. What could make it less secure than they believe?

X-Force No. 2

  • Writer: Geoffrey Thorne
  • Artist: Marcus To

In the debut of X-Force, Forge’s freshly formed squad journeyed to Japan in their first mission. This time around, they’ve found themselves in Wakanda, a place where Black Panther is sure to make an appearance. Given the circumstances, it’s unlikely that X-Force will receive a warm welcome.

Saga No. 68

  • Writer: Brian K. Vaughan
  • Artist: Fiona Staples

In the comeback of Saga, no one was let down. Hazel encounters what she believes will be her lifelong friend. However, Prince Robot is grappling with emotional turmoil and keeping his struggles to himself. Meanwhile, Gwen and The Will are still struggling to come to terms with Sophie’s passing. It seems they may never fully heal from this loss.

In the midst of despair, The Will receives news about Hazel and Alana’s location via a call. We can anticipate further details on this matter in this installment. Regardless, Saga never fails to deliver.

Powers: Who Killed Retro Girl?

  • Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
  • Artist: Michael Avon Oeming

“Powers” stands out with its exceptional writing and artwork, serving as an entry point to a world that idolizes superhumans. Unlike “The Boys”, these superheroes are regulated, and while they may not be all saints, they’re generally less abhorrent. Yet, the villains in this tale are cunningly devious.
