10 new comic books you need to read this week (and one classic pick too)

As a seasoned comic book enthusiast, hailing from the bustling streets of Gotham City, I must say these upcoming titles have me truly excited!

The comics from last week didn’t fail to impress. Issue #1 of X-Factor demonstrated that it promises an enjoyable run, offering something fresh amidst the new X-Men titles. In Miles Morales: Spider-Man issue #23, we learned that his venom powers counteract his vampiric ones, but overusing them could be lethal. As usual, Transformers issue #11 was spot-on, hinting at a possible major conflict between the Autobots and the Decepticons.

As a long-time fan of DC comics, I can hardly contain my excitement for this upcoming week! With so many new titles hitting shelves, it feels like Christmas came early. Of course, I have my personal favorites and I’m especially eager to dive into those first. For instance, the latest issue of “Batman” always promises a thrilling adventure, while “Wonder Woman” never disappoints when it comes to strong storytelling and empowering female characters. But what really gets me pumped up is discovering new series and characters that could become my next obsession. So, buckle up fellow DC enthusiasts, this week is shaping up to be a true comic book lover’s dream!

Nightwing No. 117 (pick of the week)

Before the final chapter of Tom Taylor’s groundbreaking tenure on Nightwing comic series, you won’t want to miss out!

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest No. 30

  • Writer: Mark Waid
  • Artist: Gleb Melnikov

For the very first time, DC Comics’ iconic trio – Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman – join forces in this series. Mark Waid has impressively reimagined the past escapades of Batman and Superman, and including Wonder Woman promises an even more captivating narrative.

Superman No. 17

  • Writer: Joshua Williamson

Following the events in “Absolute Power” No. 2, Superman and Zatanna venture into the most perilous regions of DC Comics. Wonder Woman No. 12

  • Writer: Tom King
  • Artists: Tony Salvador Daniel and Belén Ortega

Tom King’s monthly issues of Wonder Woman are must-reads, but his upcoming issue No. 12 might even surpass that, as it features the unlikely duo of Diana Prince and Damian Wayne joining forces. This team-up promises an enticing read.

Phoenix No. 2

  • Writer: Stephanie Phillips
  • Artist: Alessandro Miracolo

Stephanie Phillips is faced with the challenging duty of surpassing her impressive debut in the first issue of Phoenix. Luckily, she’s been a reliable writer for quite some time now. What makes it even more promising is that the previous issue concluded with Jean Grey and Corsair being pursued by Thanos’ formidable Black Order.

Wolverine: Revenge No. 1

  • Writer: Jonathan Hickman

As a hardcore gamer diving into the world of comics, the idea of a Wolverine mini-series penned by Jonathan Hickman, featuring dinosaurs no less, is enough to make my adrenaline surge! In this situation, Destro finds himself unarmed and alone, facing an adversary intent on taking his life. However, it’s crucial to note that Destro is not doomed to die; instead, this encounter will reveal his true character and resilience.

Jenny Sparks

  • Writer: Tom King
  • Artist: Jeff Spokes

When DC Comics releases a comic book under the Black Label imprint, it’s generally a high-quality read. However, there’s even more reason to be excited about Jenny Sparks. Renowned writer Tom King is at the helm, and he has previously proven his talent with successful titles such as Batman/Catwoman and Human Target under the same label. Therefore, it’s likely that this upcoming release will also be top-notch.

Predator vs Black Panther

  • Writer: Benjamin Percy
  • Artists: Chris Allen, Lee Ferguson, and Sean Hill

Benjamin Percy’s work, Predator and Wolverine, showcases the raw brutality of Wolverine against the advanced technology of the Yautjas (Predator vs. Wolverine). Now, these formidable aliens are encountering something more challenging than their previous battles. As they hunt for vibranium, they clash with the Black Panther.

Older Pick: Far Sector

  • Writer: N.K. Jemisin
  • Artist: Jamal Campbell

Renowned author N.K. Jemisin (of “Broken Earth” fame) penned one of the most eloquently written comic books I’ve encountered, with artwork by Jamal Campbell (known for “Superman”). Notably, this is also the debut of the character Sojourner Mullein.

As a gamer, I found myself immersed in the thrilling tale of Far Sector, where I step into the shoes of Sojourner Mullein, a Green Lantern assigned to a distant planet rarely touched by our guardians. The twist? Just before this planet experiences its first murder in centuries, I’m handed an experimental Green Lantern ring – talk about jumping into the deep end!
