10 new comic books you need to read this week (and one classic pick too)

As a long-time comic book enthusiast who’s seen more battles than I care to count, let me tell you this: these new issues are shaping up to be quite the spectacle!

As a long-time comic book enthusiast, I must say that this past week has been nothing short of extraordinary for me. The release of “The Power Fantasy” No. 1 by Kieron Gillen with art by Caspar Wijngaard was a breath of fresh air and a reminder to always keep an eye on Image Comics. The storytelling in this comic is top-notch, and the artwork is simply stunning.

Here are ten fresh reads you shouldn’t miss this week! However, it’s always worth setting aside some time for a timeless favorite as well.

As always, let’s start with the pick of the week.

Transformers No. 11 (pick of the week)

  • Writer: Daniel Warren Johnson
  • Artist: Jorge Corona

Previously, our last encounter with the Transformers had the Decepticons transporting Cybertron into Earth’s atmosphere through a portal, which could potentially bring about disastrous consequences for the planet. Can the Autobots prevent Shockwave from annihilating Earth? Will this be the moment when the G.I. Joes step in to help?

Green Lantern No. 14

  • Writers: Jeremy Adams and Marc Guggenheim
  • Artist: Fernando Pasarin and Xermanico

In Green Lantern issue 13, Hal Jordan managed to break free from Amanda Waller’s torture apparatus and found himself in an arsenal where numerous heroes’ weapons were kept. If he can successfully hand these over to his comrades, it could mark a pivotal moment in the storyline titled “Absolute Power”.

A captivating aspect of the Green Lantern tale revolves around Kyle Rayner. Since the Thraaros began annihilating Lanterns, he’s been speaking in a nonsensical manner due to his bond with the emotional spectrum. This seems to be the moment where Kyle organizes his thoughts and begins to retaliate.

Action Comics No. 1068

  • Writers: Gail Simone and Rainbow Rowell,
  • Artists: Eddy Barrows and Cian Tormey

In two distinct Superman narratives, Gail Simone portrays Superman battling extraterrestrial threats while relying primarily on Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen, whereas Rainbow Rowell concentrates on Lois Lane’s growth as Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Planet. Both tales offer unique appeals and are essential reads for avid Superman enthusiasts.

X-Men No. 2

  • Writer: Jed MacKay
  • Artist: Ryan Stegman

A significant portion of the description mentions, “Six X-Men facing an attacking alien armada?” This alone is enticing enough for readers to pick up this issue. Yet, it’s not just about a fight; we’ll also delve into how the X-Men are adjusting to their recent move to Alaska and explore how the local community is responding to their newcomers.

Absolute Power: Task Force VII No. 4

  • Writer: Pornsak Pichetshote
  • Artist: Claire Roe

In the story “Batman: Failsafe” by Chip Zdarsky, it’s revealed that Failsafe ultimately confronts Nightwing. Despite being defeated by Nightwing and the rest of the Bat Family during their initial encounter, Failsafe proves to be formidable. However, Nightwing is known for learning from his past mistakes, so readers will see how he evades capture in a way that underscores why he was chosen to lead Earth’s elite superhero team alongside Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman.

Ultimates No. 3

  • Writer: Deniz Camp
  • Artist: Juan Frigeri

In this universe, we’re introducing Ultimate She-Hulk, a character that surpasses even the traditional Hulk. She commands a clandestine troop of Hulks. Will her introduction mark the downfall of the Ultimates at the hands of the Maker, or will she aid them in their mission to annihilate him? In this story, who is Ultimate She-Hulk remains to be seen.

DC vs Vampires: World War V No. 1

  • Writer: Matthew Rosenberg
  • Artist: Otto Schmidt

The first DC vs Vampires series was fun and had actual consequences (that was clear when Batman was killed). Now it’s back and Damian Wayne and Kate Kane are going after Lord of the Vampires, Barbara Gordon. The difference is Damian and Kate aren’t exactly heroes. They’re vampires willing to feed on innocent people.

Immortal Thor No. 14

  • Writer: Al Ewing
  • Artist: Jan Bazaldua

In the upcoming issue 14 of “Immortal Thor,” we witness an epic clash between the Norse Sky Father, Thor, and the mighty Greek deity, Zeus, as they engage in a godly battle royale.

In this installment, number 775 of Thor’s series, you can expect a significant event unfolding. Make sure not to miss out!

Vengeance of the Moon Knight No. 8

  • Writer: Jed MacKay
  • Artist: Devmalya Pramanik

As a long-time comic book enthusiast with a soft spot for the Moon Knight character, I cannot help but express my hope that the Midnight Mission is not coming to an end. The recent introduction of new characters in Jed MacKay’s Moon Knight series has truly transformed it into a captivating and engaging read.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Nightwatcher No. 1

  • Writer: Juni Ba
  • Artist: Fero Pe

In an unfair turn of events, mutants are being targeted. Fortunately, they have a defender on their side. Yet, who is this mysterious figure known as the Nightwatcher? It was Raphael in the 2007 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. However, will it be the same in the comics?

Older Pick: The Unworthy Thor

  • Writer: Jason Aaron
  • Artist: Olivier Coipel

During his period of unworthiness, Thor turned to drinking and wallowed in self-pity. Yet, he had a mission – to reclaim his hammer. This was the key to regaining his identity as Thor. Along the journey, he encountered Beta Ray Bill and Thorri, and engaged in battles against the formidable Thanos, the Mad Titan.
