10 new comic books to watch out for this week (July 24)

As a longtime comic book enthusiast with a particular affinity for DC Universe and Marvel stories, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the latest releases hitting the shelves this week. Let me walk you through some of my most-awaited titles and share why they resonate so deeply with me.

As a longtime comic book enthusiast with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but get excited about this week’s new releases! The pages are bursting with pivotal moments and universe-altering developments that will leave us on the edge of our seats.

Yes, there is a lot happening this week, and we’re here to dive into all of it. Let’s begin with my comic book pick of the week.

NYX No. 1

  • PICK OF THE WEEK!
  • Writers: Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing
  • Artist: Francesco Mortarino

“This is mutant community. This is mutant pride. This is NYX.”

Kamala Khan came to the startling realization that she possesses mutant abilities, leading to numerous challenges in her life. Matters worsened for her and other mutants following the “Fall of X” event. However, despite the hostility and fear from the city’s inhabitants, Kamala and her companions – Wolverine (Laura Kinney), Anole, Prodigy, and Sophie Cuckoo – remain determined to thrive as mutants.

In addition, the final installment of “Ms. Marvel: Mutant Menace” depicts Ms. Marvel being perceived as a villain by her hometown community. This situation might be explored further in the opening issue. It’s possible that this is the point where Kamala reveals to her family that she is Ms. Marvel. Given that her loved ones are already aware of her secret in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and considering how closely interconnected various media outlets can be, it seems fitting for this revelation to occur now.

This will become one of the best comic books of 2024. You heard it here first.

Green Arrow No. 14

  • Writer: Joshua Williamson
  • Artist: Amancay Nahuelpan

At some point in the story, we’ll discover the reason behind Oliver Queen relinquishing the Green Arrow identity and joining forces with Amanda Waller. However, before that revelation, Oliver’s family sets out to locate the creator of Amazo, Professor Ivo. The complication is that Oliver is also on the hunt for him. This installment is expected to conclude with a confrontation between Oliver and Black Canary.

Zatanna: Bring Down The House

  • Writer: Mariko Tamaki
  • Artist: Javier Rodriguez

In simpler terms, the debut issue of DC’s latest Black Label comic book left audiences eagerly anticipating what’s next with an intriguing cliffhanger. Zatanna has committed a shocking act – she killed her father. Now, she’s being pursued for reasons connected to this deed. Is it her father coming back to life or something even more ominous? Additionally, there’s a mysterious woman making appearances at Zatanna’s performances. Who is she and what does she want?

Ultimate Black Panther No. 6

  • Writer: Bryan Edward Hill
  • Artist: Carlos Nieto

As a passionate fan, I can’t wait for the upcoming issue of Bryan Edward Hill’s “Ultimate Black Panther” volume one series! This isn’t just another battle between T’Challa and his team against Ra and Khonshu. The ComiXology description hints at something extraordinary: T’Challa will uncover hidden powers within himself to safeguard Wakanda from the rulers of the Upper and Lower Kingdoms.

Absolute Power: Task Force VII No. 2

  • Writer: John Layman
  • Artist: Max Raynor

A new leader has emerged in Atlantis, taking the form of Amazo from Task Force VII, accompanied by Depth Charge. Should the Atlantians refuse to submit, he intends to seize their powers. Naturally, Atlantis isn’t giving up without a fight. Jackson Hyde and Aquaman’s kin are putting up a resistance.

Something is Killing the Children No. 40

  • Writer: James Tynion
  • Artist: Werther Dell’Edera

I’ve had the pleasure of reading and following Erica Slaughter’s past tales for quite some time now. Each issue was not only a thrilling ride but also an enlightening experience. I’ve witnessed Erica transform into the skilled woman she is today, and I’ve accompanied her on some remarkable journeys. These stories have added depth to her character, making me invested in her present journey as well. As writer James Tynion brings us from past tales to the present, I can’t wait to see how these experiences will influence Erica’s current situation. The anticipation is real!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles No. 1

  • Writer: Jason Aaron
  • Artist: Joelle Jones

Jason Aaron contributes his skills to a renowned franchise with his latest work. Based on the synopsis, the adolescent mutant ninja turtles have each departed from New York separately. However, wickedness will eventually reunite them.

As a longtime fan of comic books, I can confidently say that Jason Aaron’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a series you absolutely don’t want to miss out on. Having followed the Ninja Turtles’ adventures for years, I’ve grown attached to their unique blend of humor, action, and heart. With Aaron at the helm, this new series promises fresh perspectives and thrilling storytelling that is sure to leave a lasting impact on readers. So mark your calendars and make sure you grab a copy of each issue as they hit shelves!

Vengeance Of The Moon Knight No. 7

  • Writer: Jed MacKay
  • Artist:  Alessandro Cappuccio

The Moon Knight series titled “Vengeance Of The Moon Knight” has stood out as the top comic book series linked to Marvel’s “Blood Hunt” event. In issue No. 4, Tigra, Reese, Soldier, and 8-Ball protected travelers during the night and facilitated Khonshu’s release from his Asgardian prison. With Marc Spector and Khonshu reunited, what transpires next?

The Creature from the Black Lagoon Lives! No. 4

  • Writer: Dan Watters, Ram V
  • Artist: Matthew Roberts, Dave Stewart

The Creature from the Black Lagoon Lives! has been the most underrated comic book of 2024. If you haven’t been reading it, stop what you’re doing, get the first three issues, and thank me later.

Absolute Power: Origins

  • Writer: John Ridley
  • Artist: Alitha Martinez

As a longtime fan of comic books and a devoted reader of Amanda Waller’s stories, I have always been intrigued by her complex character and the motivations behind her actions, particularly her seemingly relentless war against metahumans. Having read various comic book arcs over the years, I have come across hints that her daughter’s death played a significant role in this conflict.
