10 new comic books to watch out for this week (and one classic pick you need to read)

As a seasoned comic book enthusiast with over three decades of reading under my belt, I must say that this week’s new releases have me genuinely excited!

As a devoted comic book enthusiast with decades of reading under my belt, I can confidently say that the start of each month brings forth an exciting array of new releases from industry titans like DC, Marvel, and Image Comics. The latest installment of X-Men: From the Ashes, for instance, has me hooked yet again, while DC’s Absolute Power continues to captivate heroes and villains alike across galaxies. Not to mention the intriguing tie-in to the Energon Universe that’s been keeping me on my toes. These stories never fail to transport me back to the days of my youth, when comics ignited my imagination and fueled my dreams. I eagerly await the thrilling adventures that await us in the coming weeks!

Given that there are merely a few outstanding comic book releases this week, let’s delve into the whole array of upcoming comics (and without further ado, let’s kick things off with our top choice for the week!).

Uncanny X-Men No. 1 (pick of the week)

  • Writer: Gail Simone
  • Artist: David Marquez

Ever since the announcement, I’ve been eagerly anticipating this issue. Notably, Gail Simone is known for crafting timeless tales for characters such as Deadpool and Batgirl. This upcoming work on Uncanny X-Men will undoubtedly add another iconic story to her already impressive collection.

She’s guiding popular characters like Rogue, Gambit, Jubilee, Nightcrawler, and Wolverine into fresh journeys within the Marvel universe during “From the Ashes.” Don’t miss out on this exciting chapter of the X-Men saga!

Batman No. 151

  • Writers: Chip Zdarsky and Tini Howard
  • Artist: Mike Hawthorne

In this comic book, Batman and a suspected Catwoman embark on a journey to a remote island in search of something crucial to Amanda Waller’s scheme. The magazine’s cover features an image of a twisted version of Superman – Bizarro Superman. Could they be hunting down this peculiar doppelganger instead?

Waller might require Bizarro due to his magical link (as depicted in Jason Aaron’s Superman). This connection could stem from Joshua Williamson’s Superman, during the experiments conducted by Doctor Pharm and Graft on Bizarro. Regardless of the origin, it’s expected that we’ll witness an encounter between Bizarro Superman and Batman.

Scarlett No. 3

  • Writer: Kelly Thompson
  • Artist: Marco Ferrari

Previously, Scarlett was observed plunging headlong into a perilous mission from which she wasn’t supposed to return. Rest assured, she’ll accomplish her objective given her exceptional skills. What’s at stake during and after the completion of this mission is what we’re interested in. Moreover, how this incident links to the broader Energon Universe needs to be uncovered.

Absolute Power No. 2

  • Writer: Mark Waid
  • Artist: Dan Mora

Ever since the debut of “Absolute Power” No. 1, our protagonists have been tirelessly striving to evade capture and stay alive. It appears that Amanda Waller’s strategy has unfolded seamlessly, but no scheme is without flaws.

In the thrilling mini-series “Absolute Power: Task Force VII,” I found myself astonished as my Amazos began exhibiting signs of independent thought. Amanda Waller never foresaw that these newfound powers would foster individual personalities among them, and she remains oblivious to this development. This unexpected evolution could potentially lead to a rebellion within Task Force VII, posing a significant threat to her authority.

Space Ghost No. 4

  • Writer: David Pepose
  • Artist:  Jonathan Lau

In Issue No. 3 of Space Ghost, it was Jan who primarily propelled the mission forward, and she managed to make Space Ghost trust her and Jace more deeply than before. This newfound trust has made Robo Corp realize that their plans may not run as smoothly as initially anticipated.

The final statement in Issue No. 3 hints at the arrival of “Cult of Zorak” next, which suggests that one of Space Ghost’s well-known adversaries will make an appearance. Will this character maintain the original cartoon’s sarcastic tone and harbor deadly intentions, similar to his portrayal in Space Ghost: Coast to Coast, or take on a completely new persona?

Avengers No. 17

  • Writer: Jed MacKay
  • Artist: Valerio Schit

Storm didn’t stay with the Avengers for a duration that would place her among the all-time best members. However, writer Jed MacKay is going to change that situation. Regardless of how brief Storm’s association with Earth’s strongest heroes might be (once more), it’s evident that it will be impactful and it kicks off in issue 17.

Venom War No. 1

  • Writer: Al Ewing
  • Artist: Iban Coello

Over the past five years, Eddie Brock has experienced quite a ride, and it’s set to escalate with the Venom War. In this battle, it’s the father (Eddie) against his son (Dylan), and the victor will claim the title of *the* Venom. Even if I’m not a fan of Venom myself, the prospect of this intense face-off makes it seem well worth checking out.

10 new comic books to watch out for this week (and one classic pick you need to read)

Gotham City Sirens No. 1

  • Writer: Leah Williams
  • Artist: Matteo Lolli

Occasionally, you might crave a light-hearted, humorous comic book experience, and “Gotham City Sirens” fits the bill perfectly. Notably, with Leah Williams on board, this comic promises to be an engaging read. She consistently delivers top-notch comics that never disappoint.

In my excitement as a fan, let me share an update: Beyond the iconic trio of Poison Ivy, Catwoman, and Harley Quinn, a fresh face named Punchline is set to enter the arena! Accompanying her are the Nasty Boys, cowboy henchmen, and another newcomer, White Rabbit. Can’t wait to see what unfolds!

Daredevil No. 12

  • Writer: Saladin Ahmed
  • Artist: Aaron Kuder

As a devoted fan, I find myself witnessing an intense and heart-wrenching tale. Daredevil is pushed to the brink, battered and near collapse. The merciless Bullseye has one of his proteges in his grasp, adding fuel to the fire. To make matters worse, I must confront a Wilson Fisk possessed by a demonic force before reaching Bullseye. It’s becoming increasingly apparent that this story is hurtling towards an emotionally charged climax – and I fear it won’t end well.

Doctor Strange No. 18

  • Writer: Jed MacKay
  • Artist: Pasqual Ferry

The fate of Doctor Strange is uncertain at this point. For much of his adult career, he held the position of the Supreme Sorcerer. This role has now been taken over by Dr. Doom. As for Doctor Strange’s upcoming journey and how Clea reacts to Stephen’s recent actions – which while saving the world were reckless – remains to be seen.

Older Pick: Sex Criminals

  • Writer: Matt Fraction
  • Artist: Chip Zdarsky

In this case, don’t make assumptions based solely on appearances; delve deeper into the content. Indeed, it deals with sensitive topics such as sex, crime, and even criminal acts related to sex. However, beneath these themes lies a profound narrative about mental wellness, affection, and personal tragedy. It’s undeniably among the most impressive comic books published over the past two decades.
