10 new comic book picks of the week (September 11)

As a seasoned comic book enthusiast who has traversed the realms of countless universes, I must say that the latest releases have left me both intrigued and eager for more. Let’s dive into these enticing tales!

This week, the fresh chapter of “X-Men: Rising from Embers” unfolds as Wolverine embarks on his latest journey, marking the conclusion of Skybound’s first storyline for “Transformers“. Meanwhile, “Absolute Authority” carries on with some essential companion stories. Let’s dive right in and explore this week’s top pick!

Wolverine No. 1 (Pick of the week)

  • Writer: Saladin Ahmed
  • Artist: Martin Coccolo

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but feel a thrill when I read that an old adversary is set to return in a new form. The cover of Wolverine issue No. 2 hints at the return of none other than the Wendigo. If that doesn’t excite you enough, there’s also an intense brawl between Sabretooth and Wolverine from their early days. To top it off, Saladin Ahmed, who has crafted compelling stories for Daredevil and Miles Morales: Spider-Man, is at the helm of this project. I have no doubt that this will be one of Wolverine’s most captivating story arcs yet!

Absolute Power: Task Force VII

  • Writer: Stephanie Williams
  • Artist: Khary Randolph

As a gamer, I find myself squaring off against one of Amanda Waller’s creations, the formidable Amazo, in the mythical land of Themyscira (Absolute Power #3). Despite wielding the powers of various heroes, this mechanical menace is locked in combat with the fierce Amazonian warriors. Given their unyielding spirit and the overwhelming might at play, I can’t help but predict that Amazo will emerge from this battle severely crippled, if not completely destroyed.

Green Lantern No. 15

  • Writers: Jeremy Adams and Phillip K. Johnson
  • Artists: Fernando Pasarin and Montos

In Green Lantern #15, Hal Jordan finds himself in a tight spot as Amanda Waller’s forces block his path to power his Green Lantern Ring. However, he’s not one to back down easily. Instead, he decides to use the Batwing, a vehicle he didn’t even ask for, to make a daring escape and reclaim his Green Lantern strength in a story filled with witty dialogue and thrilling action.

Uncanny X-Men No. 2

  • Writer: Gail Simone
  • Artist: David Marquez

In the debut of Uncanny X-Men issue No. 1, the collaboration between Gail Simone and David Marquez has proven to be a divine union. With anticipation building for issue No. 2, we’ll reintroduce Jubilee into the mix, as well as introduce the enigmatic group of four mutants known as the Outliers. These newcomers will interact with Wolverine, Rogue, and Gambit – whether this encounter is friendly or fraught with danger remains to be seen, with potential for claws and kinetic cards being exchanged.

Space Ghost No. 5

  • Writer: David Pepose
  • Artist: Jonathan Lau

According to Carlito Brigante, it’s time for a fierce showdown – Space Ghost is going head-to-head with Zorak! While Space Ghost strives to protect his latest crew members, we wonder if Jana and Jace can make it through the clutches of the Lokar Cult.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles No. 2

  • Writer: Jason Aaron
  • Artist:  Rafael Albuquerque

Michelangelo is like a famous TV personality in Tokyo. If there’s anyone who would embrace this kind of life, it’s definitely him. But, things don’t feel quite right without his siblings around. He might have to reconcile with them. Just like Raphael in Jason Aaron’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles No. 1, there are ninjas who come for him at his own home.

DC vs Vampires: World War V No. 2

  • Writers: Matthew Rosenberg and Tyler Boss
  • Artists: Tyler Boss and Otto Schmidt

Is Damian Wayne implicated in the assault on Barbara Gordon? Did Talia al Ghul target Wonder Woman, or is a vampire stalking her instead? Who’s the latest character taking on the mantle of Batman? We hope to find solutions to these mysteries in DC vs Vampires: World War V #2.

Vengeance Of The Moon Knight No. 9

  • Writer: Jed MacKay
  • Artist: Devmalya Pramanik

In the final installment of the current story arc for “Vengeance of Moon Knight” (with Jed MacKay’s Moon Knight continuing), there are two definite points: First, this issue marks the conclusion of this specific series run. Second, it remains to be seen whether Marc Spector will adhere to Khonshu’s demand to eliminate the Shroud or choose a different path in his journey as a hero.

Transformers No. 12

  • Writer: Daniel Warren Johnson
  • Artist: Jorge Corona

The current storyline of Transformers has come to a close. What’s in store for the Autobots, Decepticons, and Earth remains to be seen. Could we possibly witness the appearance of G.I. Joe or Cobra? Only time will tell, but find out more in Transformers issue 12. Don’t forget to check it out!

Fantastic Four No. 25

  • Writer: Ryan North
  • Artist: Carlos Gomez

In this extended edition, The Fantastic Four travel to Latveria but wind up on an extraterrestrial planet instead. It’s likely they intended to challenge Dr. Doom about his future schemes (as depicted in Blood Hunt No. 4). With scarce resources available on a planet centuries behind their own time, they must figure out how to get back home.

Also, Johnny Storm has sex with an alien.

Paper Girls (older pick)

  • Writer: Brian K Vaughan
  • Artist: Cliff Chiang

The cancellation of the Paper Girls series on Amazon Prime was disheartening, as it’s one of the most exceptional comic books from this century. While the accolade may seem lofty, it’s well-deserved. This captivating narrative provides a poignant exploration of friendship, loss, and personal growth, making it an engaging read regardless of whether you were a fan, detractor, or neither of the show.
