10 Netflix Fantasy Series That Are Better Than ‘The Witcher’

Netflix fantasy series usually offer stunning visuals, detailed world-building, and a welcome escape from reality. However, quality varies quite a bit. The Witcher, a popular series based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s books, had a promising start but has declined in recent seasons. The departure of Henry Cavill, who played the main character, feels like a final blow to the show’s prospects.

Okay, so The Witcher wasn’t quite what I’d hoped for, but honestly, Netflix has SO many other amazing shows! I’ve found 10 that are seriously fantastic – you’ll probably love them. Consider them my recommendations, and maybe, just maybe, toss a little appreciation their way!

‘Wednesday’ (2022-Present, 2 Seasons)

Wednesday Addams is a quirky and mysterious character with a spooky side. In the Netflix series Wednesday, Jenna Ortega plays her as a bit of a gothic detective, solving mysteries at Nevermore Academy. The show is directed by and heavily influenced by the unique style of Tim Burton, who also executive produces. Currently filming in Ireland, the fantasy series is planned to have three seasons.

One of the best things about Wednesday is that it wasn’t based on existing stories, unlike The Witcher. This gave the creators a lot more freedom with the plot. While it’s a fresh story, the show still includes references to past Addams Family content, like the classic 1960s sitcom and the movies from the ’90s. Wednesday is both visually stunning and genuinely enjoyable, and the dynamic between Wednesday Addams and Enid Sinclair (affectionately known as ‘Wenclair’ by fans) is a definite highlight.

‘Shadow and Bone’ (2021-2023, 2 Seasons)

Netflix

Even though Shadow and Bone was unfortunately cancelled, it’s still worth watching! The show is based on the popular novels Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows and gained a dedicated fanbase during its run. The story centers on Alina Starkov, who discovers she’s the Sun Summoner – a figure long predicted in prophecy. This makes her a target for different groups who want to control her, including the powerful and dangerous General Kirigan, also known as The Darkling. Alina must learn to control her newfound abilities, avoid those who are hunting her, and ultimately save her country, Ravka, which is home to people with magical powers called the Grisha.

Shadow and Bone is a well-made adaptation of Leigh Bardugo’s novels, successfully combining a realistic, tough atmosphere with dark and fantastical magic. The show does a great job of creating a detailed and immersive world, and the acting is strong. It’s disappointing that we won’t see more of Bardugo’s Grishaverse stories brought to life on television.

‘Arcane’ (2021-2024, 2 Seasons)

Netflix

Arcane is a visually breathtaking fantasy series on Netflix. Set in the world of the popular game League of Legends, the show focuses on the tense relationship between Piltover, a rich and prosperous city, and Zaun, its struggling, neglected lower district. The invention of hextech – a way to harness magic – disrupts the fragile peace between the two cities, and sisters Vi and Jinx find themselves at the center of the conflict. The events of the series will have lasting consequences for the entire world of Runeterra.

I’m completely captivated by this series! It brilliantly tackles themes of social inequality and the impact of new technology, but what really drew me in was the incredibly complex and emotional bond between Vi and Jinx. It’s hard to pin down to just one genre, which is amazing – there’s a little bit of fantasy, a touch of sci-fi and steampunk, and tons of thrilling action. The voice acting is phenomenal, but honestly, it’s the animation that truly sets this show apart – it’s some of the best I’ve ever seen, making it a real standout in animation history.

‘Dead Boy Detectives’ (2024, 1 Season)

Netflix

It’s sad to say goodbye to Dead Boy Detectives. This enjoyable fantasy-mystery series only lasted one season, but it was full of potential. The show centers around Charles and Edwin, two ghosts who choose to stay on Earth and become detectives, solving crimes with a supernatural twist. They team up with Crystal, a psychic who can communicate with spirits, and together they face off against a dangerous witch named Esther, who steals the life force of young women to stay young.

The show creates such a detailed and believable world that it truly feels like you’re part of the story – it’s completely immersive. The characters are incredibly unique, including a man trapped as a walrus, demons, magical creatures, a witch’s companion, the Cat King, and even a character from DC’s Doom Patrol. With its vibrant cast and inclusive LGBTQ+ representation, it’s easy to see why Dead Boy Detectives connected with viewers.

‘Sweet Tooth’ (2021-2024, 3 Seasons)

Netflix

Robert Downey Jr. helped create Sweet Tooth, a fantasy series based on a DC comic. Despite the title, it’s not really about sweets! The story takes place in a world recovering from a devastating pandemic called ‘The Sick,’ which has led to the birth of human-animal hybrids. These hybrids face prejudice and are often hunted, and the series explores whether they caused the pandemic or are simply a consequence of it. We follow Gus, a young boy who is part deer, and Tommy Jepperd, a man who rescues him from those who hunt hybrids. Tommy nicknames Gus ‘Sweet Tooth’ because of his fondness for candy – a playful nod to the show’s title.

Okay, so as a total fantasy fan, I have to tell you about Sweet Tooth. Seriously, everyone’s raving about it – critics love it, and audiences do too. It’s just a gorgeous, heartwarming story, and what’s really cool is that it’s something the whole family can enjoy together. If you’re looking for a show that’ll remind you how amazing it feels to believe in magic, you absolutely need to check this one out.

‘Lockwood & Co.’ (2023, 1 Season)

Netflix

If you enjoy fantasy stories with spooky, supernatural elements and a bit of mystery, check out Lockwood & Co. This Netflix series, based on Jonathan Stroud’s books, is set in a version of present-day Britain where ghosts have stopped technological progress. These ghosts are dangerous, and while adults can’t see them, children can. The story follows Lucy, a teenager who travels to London to join Lockwood & Co., a ghost-hunting team led by two young men.

Inspired by classic British mysteries like Sherlock Holmes, Lockwood & Co. was a show with a lot of potential and deserved a second season. The actors give strong performances, and the series has a fun, *Ghostbusterslike energy, feeling surprisingly modern even with its old-fashioned tech. Ultimately, it’s a captivating story built around an enjoyable central mystery.

‘One Piece’ (2023-Present, 1 Season)

Netflix’s live-action version of the popular manga and anime series One Piece is a vibrant and exciting adventure! Iñaki Godoy shines as Luffy, a cheerful young man determined to find the legendary treasure, One Piece, and become the King of the Pirates. He gathers a diverse crew, the Straw Hats, and together they set sail, facing off against colorful enemies and intriguing characters as they journey towards the dangerous Grand Line in search of Gold Roger’s hidden riches.

Unlike many other shows here, One Piece has already been picked up for both Season 2 and Season 3, with the first of those new seasons launching this month. That’s great news, as there’s still plenty of story left, and I’m excited to continue following the adventures of the Going Merry crew.

‘Kaos’ (2024, 1 Season)

Netflix

While some might see Kaos as more of a comedy than a fantasy, its fantastical elements are central to the story. The show revolves around Greek gods, specifically Prometheus’ scheme to unseat the tyrannical Zeus. He enlists the help of three unsuspecting humans, and an ancient prophecy suggests their efforts will lead to the downfall of the gods and the rise of ‘Kaos.’ Ultimately, this series is a fun and exciting adventure, surprisingly full of both heart and meaningful insights.

I really enjoy stories based on Greek mythology, and this show delivers, especially with its funny approach. It’s a shame it only lasted for two seasons – many streaming shows seem to follow that pattern. However, even as a short series, it’s a very well-done and satisfying watch.

‘Warrior Nun’ (2020-2022, 2 Seasons)

Netflix

Everyone loves a fresh idea, and Warrior Nun definitely delivers! The show follows 19-year-old Ava Silva, who unexpectedly wakes up in a morgue and discovers a mysterious artifact is embedded in her back. She soon learns she’s part of the Order of the Cruciform Sword, a secret society dedicated to fighting demons on Earth. To top it all off, both heaven and hell are after her! It’s a lot for anyone to handle, especially at 19.

I was totally hooked on Warrior Nun – it reminded me a lot of Buffy, and that’s a huge compliment! The action was really well done, the acting was fantastic, and I loved how it explored ideas about faith. Plus, the connection between Ava and Sister Beatrice felt so real. I was thrilled when their romance was finally confirmed in the season finale, but honestly, I’m heartbroken we won’t get to see where their story goes. Still, I think Warrior Nun is a show everyone should check out.

‘Castlevania’ (2017-2021, 4 Seasons)

Netflix

Okay, so if we’re talking long-running series, Castlevania is definitely up there for me. It’s based on the classic video game, and it’s a really cool, dark fantasy anime. The story kicks off with Dracula – yes, the Dracula, Vlad Țepeș – after his beloved wife is tragically killed by being burned as a witch. Naturally, he goes on this massive revenge spree, raising an army of demons to basically destroy everything in Wallachia. Luckily, there’s Trevor Belmont, the last of a famous monster-hunting family, who steps up to fight him. He teams up with Sypha Belnades and, surprisingly, Dracula’s own son, Alucard, and together they try to save the world.

The animated series Castlevania features a fantastic voice cast, including well-known actors like James Callis, Graham McTavish, Richard Armitage, Emily Swallow, Lance Reddick, and Jason Isaacs. It expertly combines dark fantasy and horror elements, with stunning visuals that are a treat for viewers, especially those who enjoy animation and monster stories.
