Anime is incredibly popular, and for good reason, despite having a huge number of shows available. However, it’s surprisingly difficult to find a truly great series that lasts for more than one season. Even some well-known titles, like No Game No Life and Grimgar: Ashes and Illusions, only have a single season, and fans have largely given up hope of seeing them continued.
Despite the criticism, several isekai anime are truly excellent and manage to stay consistently good throughout multiple seasons. While high-quality, long-running isekai series aren’t common, the best ones are definitely worth watching from start to finish.
KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World! Is the Greatest Isekai Comedy
I’ve noticed that isekai stories are full of familiar themes, so it’s not surprising that parodies have popped up. But honestly, KonoSuba is the funniest one I’ve seen – and it’s genuinely one of the best comedy anime out there. The story starts like a lot of isekai: a guy, Kazuma Satou, dies and gets reborn in a fantasy world. A goddess gives him the chance to bring one item with him, and that’s where things really start to get interesting.
Instead of choosing a useful item, Kazuma decides to bring the goddess Aqua with him on his adventures. Together, they create a hilariously flawed team, and none of them are really equipped to save the world. KonoSuba cleverly pokes fun at typical fantasy tropes while still embracing them, which keeps the show funny, exciting, and consistently entertaining for many episodes.
Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy Knows How to Use Familiar Isekai Tropes Well
The ‘overpowered main character’ is a common theme in isekai anime, and it’s often done poorly. However, shows like Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy demonstrate that it can be successful if the story avoids simply being about wish fulfillment. While the main character, Misumi Makoto, is incredibly powerful, he’s still rejected by the goddess of his new world because she finds him unattractive.
Makoto is exiled to the farthest reaches of the world and given a strange curse: he can understand all languages except human. This creates a problem he can’t solve with strength alone, though a blessing from the Moon God proves very helpful. Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy is a delightful and funny isekai story that’s both sophisticated and engaging, and it just keeps getting better as it goes on.
Overlord Is Still Going Strong 4 Seasons In
For over ten years, Overlord has been a key series in the isekai genre. While it features a very powerful main character – a common trope – it presents this in a fairly direct and uncomplicated way. First released in 2015, right when isekai stories were becoming hugely popular, the show stayed well-loved throughout its four seasons.
The main character of Overlord isn’t a hero – he’s the villain! He finds himself trapped inside his favorite video game as his incredibly powerful character, Momonga, who leads a powerful guild called Ainz Ooal Gown. Determined to become the ruler of this new world, Momonga sets out to conquer it with the help of his devoted followers.
El-Hazard: The Magnificent World Is a Must-Watch Isekai Classic
The idea of being transported to another world isn’t new; many classic stories explored this concept long before the term “isekai” became popular. One early example is El-Hazard: The Magnificent World, which follows three high school students and their teacher as they get caught up in a fantasy world conflict between humans and insect-like creatures.
First released in 1995, El-Hazard might not seem groundbreaking compared to today’s fantasy anime. However, it has aged remarkably well, offering a charming and classic fantasy story that still manages to captivate audiences, even those who enjoy modern isekai series.

The main character of the series, Rudeus, starts out as someone difficult to like – he’s selfish and flawed. However, it’s these very imperfections that make his journey of development so interesting to watch. Luckily, the story’s strengths as a gripping dark fantasy, set in a world with detailed history and lore, keep viewers invested even if they don’t connect with Rudeus right away.
