10 Must-See Underrated Fantasy Series Based on Books

Translating a cherished book into a film or television show can be challenging due to the fact that each viewer’s mental image of characters might not align perfectly with the actors chosen. This discrepancy can create an unsettling feeling for fans, as they have visualized these characters in their own unique ways. Despite this challenge, books remain rich sources of inspiration for movies and TV shows, with some films even inspiring subsequent books.

In terms of adaptability, the fantasy genre stands out among others, particularly in this era dominated by Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI). A story penned on paper can be brought to life digitally. However, not all adaptations are equally successful, and some truly shine, garnering widespread acclaim. Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, The Witcher, and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power are a handful of fantasy novels that have transitioned into critically-acclaimed television series. There are numerous series that remain undiscovered by the general public, yet deserve a larger fanbase than they currently possess.

Here are 10 underrated fantasy series based on books.

‘The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself’ (2022)

Based on the ‘Half Bad’ trilogy by Sally Green

As a film enthusiast, I must admit that I was thoroughly captivated by “The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself” when it debuted on Netflix last year. Adapted from the first installment of Sally Green’s “Half Bad” trilogy, the series followed the life of 16-year-old Nathan Byrne, a boy who, unbeknownst to him, is the son of the world’s most dangerous blood witch. Despite its initial success and positive reception, the show unfortunately only lasted for one season, leaving fans yearning for more.

In the town of Fairborn, a group known as the Council of Witches has been keeping tabs on him due to his potential to follow in his father’s footsteps. As Nathan embarks on a journey of self-discovery, he must decide who among his new magical associates can be trusted. Jay Lycurgo plays Nathan, while Nadia Parkes and Emilien Vekemans portray two witches who join forces with him. The series stands out for its clever plot twists and impressive magic scenes, only to be unexpectedly taken off the air.

‘Bitten’ (2014 – 2016)

Based on the ‘Women of the Otherworld’ series by Kelley Armstrong

2014 saw the TV series “Bitten” flipping the werewolf subgenre on its axis with an unconventional approach. The lead character, Elena Michaels, portrayed by Laura Vandervoort, is the globe’s lone female werewolf. She finds herself torn between maintaining her everyday life in Toronto and responding to the summons from her pack, stationed upstate New York. Juggling both her relationship with her human lover and managing relationships back home adds complexity to her already challenging existence.

The television show lasted for three seasons, following Elena’s tale amidst werewolf factions trying to hunt hers. In the second season, it delved deeper into its fantasy elements by incorporating witches as key characters. Eventually, this Canadian production found its home on the SyFy Channel in the U.S., and ultimately ended after three seasons.

For three seasons, the show chronicled Elena’s story amidst a backdrop of rival werewolf packs hunting hers. In the second season, it expanded its fantasy elements by featuring witches as central characters. This Canadian production eventually found a home on SyFy Channel in the U.S., wrapping up after three seasons.

‘Neil Gaiman’s Likely Stories’ (2016)

Based on four short stories by Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman has seen several of his books transformed into television shows, from “Good Omens” to “American Gods” and “The Sandman.” His science fiction and fantasy novels resonate with fans worldwide. “Neil Gaiman’s Likely Stories,” which premiered on the BBC in 2016, was inspired by some of his short stories. Each episode is a whimsical blend of elements that hint at horror.

In one of the episodes, George MacKay portrays a youth grappling with discomfort in his own body, while a doctor observes this transformation unfold before them. Other stories show individuals living off uncooked meat, a haunting tale of mental distress, and a woman who remains ageless. Denise Gough from ‘Andor’ was featured in two episodes, and Neil Gaiman even makes an appearance as himself.

7
‘A Discovery of Witches’ (2018 – 2022)

Based on the ‘All Souls’ trilogy by Deborah Harkness

There’s something entertaining about magical species collaborating in any situation, be it a simple interaction or a more complex scenario. Shows like Van Helsing, Penny Dreadful, and A Discovery of Witches are examples that capitalize on this intrigue. In the latter series, Matthew Goode plays a vampire and Teresa Palmer is a witch who join forces to combat common adversaries. Originating from Deborah Harkness’s All Souls trilogy, the show ran for three seasons spanning from 2018 to 2022.

In a nutshell, Palmer – a historian and also a witch – discovers an old manuscript in Oxford’s library. She joins forces with Goodé’s biochemist (and vampire) to safeguard the book as they endeavor to decipher its enigmatic secrets. The initial two seasons closely followed the source material. However, the third season deviated for a self-contained narrative, leaving many fans feeling let down.

6
‘The Witcher: Blood Origin’ (2022)

Based on ‘The Witcher’ by Andrzej Sapkowski

Following the triumph of “The Witcher”, Netflix delved once more into the tales penned by Andrzej Sapkowski, producing the prequel series titled “The Witcher: Blood Origin“. Spanning four episodes, this show takes place a thousand and two hundred years prior to the primary series and explores the origins of the first Witcher. Set in an elven world before the merging of the spheres, a significant event that fused all worlds into one, it offers insights into how the first Witcher emerged. The illustrious Michelle Yeoh leads the cast, with Minnie Driver assuming the role of the narrator who guides us through the tale, sharing the story of the world’s creation.

Sophia Brown, Laurence O’Fuarain, Mirren Mack, Lenny Henry, Jacob Collins Levy, and Joey Batey are all prominent figures in this series. The offshoot of the program received unfavorable comments from critics, but if you’re a fan of the initial production, it’s worth giving it a watch. Additionally, there are thrilling action scenes that contribute to an enjoyable viewing experience.

5
‘The Magicians’ (2015 – 2020)

Based on ‘The Magicians’ trilogy by Lev Grossman

From 2015 to 2020, I found myself captivated by a mesmerizing series called “The Magicians,” which graced our screens on SyFy. This enchanting tale revolved around a mystical academy, where aspiring magicians honed their craft. Among the students, I followed Quentin Coldwater, portrayed by Jason Ralph, who embarked on a magical journey to master sorcery, and Julia Wicker, played by Stella Maeve, my childhood friend who missed out on enrollment into this mystical institution.

The narrative unfolded with an intricate web of characters, each endowed with unique abilities. As the seasons progressed, the magic and visual effects only grew more sophisticated, leaving me spellbound with each episode.

Due to spanning over five seasons, the show managed to offer rich character development, which is not often seen in fantasy series. The show gained massive popularity among fans and critics, with several seasons receiving perfect ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. Its dedicated fanbase is expected to expand further as time passes.

4
‘Mayfair Witches’ (2023 – Present)

Based on ‘Lives of the Mayfair Witches’ by Anne Rice

Anne Rice is undeniably one of the most renowned fantasy authors in history. The series Mayfair Witches is adapted from her book The Lives of the Mayfair Witches. In this series, Alexandra Daddario plays Rowan Fielding, a neurosurgeon who discovers she is the inheritor of a lineage of witches. Upon learning this, she must navigate her evolving magical powers and confront a sinister presence that her family has battled for generations, which she now faces as well. The show features Harry Hamlin, Tongayi Chirisa, Jack Huston, Ben Feldman, Annabeth Gish, among others.

The currently airing AMC show, “Mayfair Witches,” situated within the Immortal Universe and linking Rice’s projects, has garnered a strong following among fans, although critics have given it mixed reviews. However, due to its charismatic leading actress Daddario, the series was recently granted a third season renewal.

3
‘Sleepy Hollow’ (2013 – 2017)

Based on ‘The Legend of Sleepy Hollow’ by Washington Irving

The television series Sleepy Hollow reimagined a timeless story for contemporary audiences. Originating from the well-known works of Washington Irving, it moved Ichabod Crane’s character into current times, with the Headless Horseman making a return. In this updated setting, Crane and Abbie Mills, two individuals destined to bear witness to Revelation, join forces to prevent the Horseman from recovering his head.

In a different yet understandable phrasing: Tom Mison, Nicole Beharie, Orlando Jones, Katia Winter, and Lyndie Greenwood play key roles as Crane and Mills combat supernatural threats in the quaint town of Sleepy Hollow, New York. The intriguing blend of drama, horror, and supernatural elements captivated audiences for four seasons on Fox from 2013 to 2017. This series served as a compelling follow-up to the Tim Burton film bearing the same title, offering viewers various avenues to further immerse themselves in the Headless Horseman lore.

2
‘Locke & Key’ (2020 – 2022)

Based on the ‘Locke & Key’ comic book series by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez

Following extensive development across various networks and services, along with an aborted film project, Locke & Key made its debut on Netflix in 2020. This series was brought to life by creators Carlton Cuse, Meredith Averill, and Aron Eli Coleite, inspired by the comic book series penned by Joe Hill. The narrative revolves around the Locke family who relocate from Seattle to Matheson, Massachusetts following the tragic demise of their family’s patriarch. Upon arrival, they reside in the ancestral home, commonly known as Keyhouse.

In their household, Nina, the wife, along with their three children – Bode, Tyler, and Kinsey – start finding enigmatic keys that unlock magical portals. Eager to uncover these keys before an ominous presence does, the kids embark on a relentless quest. The series ran for three seasons on Netflix from 2020 to 2022 and was praised by critics for its accurate adaptation of the source material. It skillfully blended supernatural and eerie elements, while receiving acclaim for its captivating score, stunning set design, and impressive visual effects.

1
‘Shadow and Bone’ (2021 – 2023)

Based on works by Leigh Bardugo

According to Leigh Bardugo’s renowned books, the Netflix series Shadow and Bone, which spanned two seasons from 2021 to 2023, was a massive success. The show centered around the Grisha, individuals who possess magical powers within the Grishaverse. They were able to manipulate matter at a minute level, known as “the small science.” The central character, Alina Starkov (played by Jessie Mei Li), is an Army cartographer who unexpectedly uncovers her magical abilities, igniting a series of events that resonate throughout the Grishaverse. As she becomes a fugitive, Alina must quickly learn about her surroundings, herself, and whom to rely on.

The series excellently portrays Bardugo’s fictional realms and garnered acclaim for its intricate set construction. Ben Barnes shone as the primary villain in this production. Unfortunately, Netflix terminated it after only two seasons, disappointing viewers who had immersed themselves in these complex worlds. This decision might have been due to the writer’s strike in 2023, causing delays in production timelines. Regrettably, no other streaming platform took over, leaving many storylines unresolved.
