For over thirty years, ever since Goku first transformed into a Super Saiyan in Dragon Ball Z, dramatic transformation sequences have become a defining feature of anime. They’ve become so ingrained in the genre that they’re almost expected. These sequences often show a character’s emotional growth or a surge in power, and many are remembered for being visually stunning.
For decades, animators have tried many different ways to create those exciting, colorful character transformations. While not all of them are the most impactful, some transformations in shonen anime are particularly memorable because of how they look—think dazzling energy bursts, bright elemental powers, or bold color choices that have become iconic in pop culture.
Ragyo Kiryuin Becomes a Rainbow-Tinted Monster in Kill La Kill
Ragyo Kiryuin from Kill la Kill is a truly compelling anime character – a woman who ruthlessly manipulates everyone around her, even her own daughters. Driven by her desire to perfect Life Fibers, she wears an outfit called Shinra-Koketsu that quickly surpasses the power of Ryuko and Satsuki’s Kamui uniforms. While it initially resembles a traditional Japanese wedding dress, Shinra-Koketsu soon changes dramatically.
As Ragyo Kiryuin unleashes the power of Shinra-Koketsu, vibrant rainbows appear behind her, while her dress becomes more and more threatening. She towers over her daughters, easily surpassing their strength even while they’re using Junketsu and Senketsu. Despite only lasting a short time—less than an episode—it’s a visually stunning scene.
Deku’s Full Cowling Makes Him a Glowing Green Powerhouse in MHA
Izuku Midoriya, known as Deku, quickly wins over audiences, even though he starts with no superpowers. He later gains the powerful ability One For All from the hero All Might, who warns him to use it carefully to avoid serious injury. Despite this, Deku often throws caution to the wind in battles, pushing his body to the breaking point to protect others.
Full Cowl allows Deku to access different levels of the One For All quirk, and reaching 100% significantly boosts his power. At its maximum potential, Full Cowl makes Deku as strong and fast as All Might, dramatically changing his appearance. When fully powered up, his hair becomes spiky, green energy surrounds him, and his skin gains a reddish-brown hue. In this form, he was far too powerful for Overhaul to handle.
Usagi’s Moon Cosmic Power, Make Up Is a Rosy Highlight of Sailor Moon
Usagi Tsukino, known as Sailor Moon, first appeared in the Moon Kingdom before being reborn on Earth. She’s been the central character of the series since the 1990s, and her many transformations are incredibly famous – with the ‘Moon Cosmic Power, Make Up’ sequence being the most dazzling.
The way Sailor Moon transforms in the manga is surprisingly straightforward. The anime, however, makes it a much more elaborate and visually stunning process. Bright pink light emphasizes the ribbons that wrap around Usagi, creating her Sailor Scout outfit and a truly impressive new look. Sailor Moon Crystal takes this sequence even further, adding more lunar imagery and details, making it one of the best transformation scenes in anime.
Hiei Summons a Glorious Dragon of the Darkness Flame in YuYu Hakusho
Modern anime often features powerful bonds between characters, and that’s certainly true in the series featuring Yusuke Urameshi. He wouldn’t have been able to succeed as the main character without the help of his companion, Hiei. Hiei, being a demon, has access to incredibly strong and unusual powers. One of his most notable abilities is summoning the Dragon of the Darkness Flame – a powerful, dragon-shaped blast of dark purple fire.
The Dragon of the Darkness Flame is a powerful technique, and Hiei has even used it on himself. It’s impressive simply because of its raw power. The process of creating the dragon is as exciting as the dragon itself – black flames swirl around Hiei’s hand and then burst forth into the dragon’s form. While the anime sometimes shows the dragon with slightly different colors, this actually adds to its distinctive appearance.
Rukia’s Bankai Transforms Her into a Crystalline Angel in Bleach
In the anime Bleach, the strongest abilities for Soul Reapers, called Bankai, represent the ultimate form of their swords. These powers are incredibly rare and visually impressive, but Rukia Kuchiki’s Bankai, Hakka no Togame, is particularly stunning. When Rukia activates Hakka no Togame, it doesn’t just change her sword—it transforms her entire body into a shimmering, ice-like angel.
Rukia appears in a beautiful, all-white kimono, complete with matching ribbons, flowers, and a crown – a striking first impression for the character in Bleach. But despite her delicate and graceful look, Rukia’s true power is far from gentle. Her Bankai ability generates extreme cold, instantly freezing even powerful enemies like the Sternritter, and shrouding the battlefield in a shimmering, icy mist.
The Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Becomes the Universe Itself
The series immediately expands its scope in the first episode, moving the action beyond Earth and throughout the entire universe. Attempts to compare the power levels of different mecha become irrelevant as increasingly powerful machines appear, eventually leading to the Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. This massive machine, known as STTGL, is made of pure energy and radiates various colors.
The Gunmen is mostly teal-blue, but its incredible features are what really stand out. The STTGL is said to be larger than the entire universe, and it moves faster than the laws of physics allow. Everything about the Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is designed to be spectacular, and its transformation is truly amazing.
Sukuna’s Malevolent Shrine Is a Kaleidoscopic Temple in Jujutsu Kaisen
I remember hearing stories about Sukuna, the terrifying figure from the golden age of Jujutsu, and then suddenly, he was back at the beginning of Jujutsu Kaisen. At first, his abilities seemed simple enough, but it quickly became clear he had an incredible control over them. And his Domain Expansion? It wasn’t just powerful – it was genuinely unsettling, and immediately stood out as one of the most disturbing transformations I’ve ever seen in anime.
Malevolent Shrine looks like a corrupted Buddhist temple, decorated with terrifying images of demons, skeletons, and gruesome body horror. Painted in striking shades of red, blue, green, yellow, and black, Sukuna’s Domain perfectly reflects his evil nature, turning the area into a horrifying, death-filled altar built solely for destruction.
The Six Paths Sage Mode Is Naruto’s Most Beautiful Transformation
I’m absolutely blown away by the Six Paths Sage Mode – it’s just so much more refined than the other transformations! It’s special because Naruto got it directly from Hagoromo Otsutsuki, and when he activates it, it’s incredible. His eyes completely change, becoming almost otherworldly with these brand new, intricate patterns swirling in his pupils. It’s a really striking visual!
Naruto’s Six Paths Sage Mode is visually striking, with colors that shift as he uses it. A golden, glowing aura surrounds him, like a chakra cloak, and unique markings appear on his collar and face. Overall, this form makes Naruto look almost godlike.
Marco Becomes a Magnificently Fiery Phoenix in One Piece
The world of One Piece is full of character transformations, and it’s hard to keep track of them all! But fans definitely remember Marco the Phoenix, a powerful commander who uses a unique Devil Fruit. This fruit lets him turn into a massive, golden and blue phoenix. The intense heat from this transformation significantly boosts his strength, allowing him to overcome even the toughest enemies.
The flames mold themselves around its form, creating a truly stunning spectacle. While the Phoenix Devil Fruit’s hybrid transformation isn’t as grand, Marco appears incredibly powerful with wings and claws of fire emerging from his human body.
Goku Black’s Super Saiyan Rosé Radiates Power in Dragon Ball Super
Many characters in Dragon Ball have used a wide range of colors to power up, but Goku Black’s Super Saiyan Rosé stands out as particularly striking. Creator Akira Toriyama described it as a Super Saiyan form with a slightly different color than Goku’s. Interestingly, the transformation looks very similar to the Super Saiyan Blue form seen in Dragon Ball Super.
While both are powerful, Super Saiyan Rosé stands out with its striking pink and purple colors and incredibly strong attacks like the Super Black Kamehameha, giving it a more menacing and godlike feel than the standard blue Super Saiyan form. In the Super Dragon Ball Heroes series, the Crimson-Masked Saiyan utilizes three stronger versions of this form – Rosé 2, Rosé 3, and Full Power – all of which share the same impressive energy and are visually exciting to watch.
