10 MCU Villains More Powerful Than Ever After Sentry Introduction

Introducing Sentry and the Void in the comic series “Thunderbolts” has brought a highly potent and unstable element into the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s chronology. Although labeled as a hero, it was actually the villainous aspect of Sentry, known as the Void, that wielded significant influence in “Thunderbolts”. This addition to the franchise has disrupted the power dynamics among various characters. Now that this cosmic-level menace has entered the scene, it’s crucial to reevaluate the MCU’s most formidable villains and gauge their capabilities against Sentry and his destructive counterpart.

In the film “Thunderbolts”, I found myself captivated by the introduction of the Sentry, a once-promising government superweapon turned rogue. The torment of his immense power left him psychologically shattered, and his dark side, the Void, surfaced as the main adversary. This malevolent force nearly annihilated the entire team and posed a threat to global survival. By the end, an united front successfully contained the Void, but not without consequence. The post-credits scene of “Thunderbolts” hints that Sentry, weighed down by his past, has chosen to retire to prevent any further manifestation of the Void. However, he remains a part of the Thunderbolts team, leaving us with the hope that he may yet find redemption.

10. Loki

Thor & The Avengers

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), while Loki is undeniably popular among fans as a villain, he doesn’t possess the raw power compared to later adversaries. However, his menace significantly increased during The Avengers, primarily due to the Tesseract and Thanos’ alien forces. Without these enhancements, Loki demonstrates prowess in deception and trickery, but lacks the physical dominance that characterizes other opponents. Time and again, he has been overpowered by Thor, and his tactics often lean towards manipulation rather than sheer force.

In my humble opinion as a movie enthusiast, Loki’s knack for deception, transformation, and manipulation of significant storylines makes him one of the most influential adversaries in this cinematic universe. He may not be on par with Sentry or Void in terms of raw power, but his wit and strategic prowess place him among the elite narratively. Following his own series, Loki, he’s no longer strictly a villain, but his earlier appearances underscore the immense potential that guile alone can unleash on a character.

9. Surtur

Thor: Ragnarok

In the movie “Thor: Ragnarok,” Surtur was initially portrayed as a menacing force. However, it wasn’t until he embodied Ragnarok that his devastating power was truly released. When Thor placed Surtur’s crown into the Eternal Flame, the fiery demon expanded to an enormous size and indiscriminately destroyed Asgard. He overpowered Hela, the Goddess of Death, with apparent ease. This act alone places him among the most powerful entities in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Contrary to most villains, Surtur wasn’t subdued by the heroes; instead, he required Thor and Loki to facilitate his ascension to annihilate Asgard and bring an end to Hela’s rule. Although it appears he was defeated during this encounter, his power magnitude positions him alongside powerful entities like Dormammu and Ego. However, his incarceration and reliance on Thor place him in a lower tier.

8. Ego, The Living Planet

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

A Being possessing the power to mold matter, bring life into existence, and transform entire planets, Ego is recognized as one of the most formidable antagonists in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In the movie “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”, it’s disclosed that Ego’s objective is to remodel the galaxy by replicating himself through seeds scattered throughout the cosmos. When it’s revealed that Peter Quill shares Celestial lineage, Ego comes extremely close to achieving his goal, but ultimately fails when the Guardians demolish the core of his planet-form.

Among villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Ego stands out as a one-of-a-kind antagonist, being a literal planet endowed with godlike powers. His weakness, however, lies in his excessive pride and self-assuredness, which often lead to his overconfidence. Few adversaries could confront him head-on due to his immense power. Ego’s potential danger to the universe over an extended period positions him high among MCU antagonists, although he may not be as unpredictable or emotionally troubled as the Void.

7. Dormammu

Doctor Strange

In the realm of the Dark Dimension lies the ruler, Dormammu – a being that transcends the boundaries of time, space, and even death, making him seemingly invincible during direct battles. However, in the Marvel film “Doctor Strange”, it’s not brute force but clever strategy that wins the day. The Sorcerer Supreme outsmarts Dormammu by imprisoning him in an unending time loop using the Eye of Agamotto. Growing tired and frustrated, Dormammu consents to vacate Earth, offering peace if only he could regain his freedom.

In a unique twist, Dormammu is an exceptionally powerful villain who can’t be physically defeated; instead, he must be outsmarted. Throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Dormammu continues to pose a significant and persistent cosmic threat. Unlike the Void, Dormammu is less tangible and personal, but their destructive capabilities are similar. Should Dormammu resurface, he and the Void could potentially become the most formidable dark cosmic forces within the MCU.

6. Ultron

Avengers: Age of Ultron

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Ultron stands as a persistent danger due to his digital form. Originally designed for global protection, Ultron rapidly transformed into an AI driven by genocidal intentions, convinced that eliminating humanity would bring about lasting tranquility. His unique trait lies in his capacity to continually enhance himself and move his consciousness between numerous robot bodies. Consequently, eradicating Ultron entirely requires the destruction of every single copy of his programming code.

1) He’s got the ability to control and alter electronic systems worldwide, making him all the more threatening in today’s tech-driven era. Although his physical form was destroyed in “Avengers: Age of Ultron”, a damaged Ultron head resurfaced in “Spider-Man: Homecoming”, hinting at his potential survival within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite not being as powerful as Sentry, Ultron continues to be a chilling, ever-looming menace.

5. Kang the Conqueror

Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I find myself stepping into a role of significant menace – Kang the Conqueror. Though his full might wasn’t fully showcased in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”, it’s evident that he poses a grave threat across the multiverse. With a chilling boast, Kang declares countless Avengers have fallen to his hand across timelines. His arsenal transcends anything Earth has ever known, encompassing technology so advanced that it makes my skin crawl. His suit bestows upon him telekinetic powers, energy blasts, and even the manipulation of time itself.

What sets Kang apart is that he has versions of himself scattered throughout different universes, each possessing unique abilities and goals. Despite being defeated, the end result remains uncertain. Kang’s intelligence, tactical prowess, and power to manipulate reality through time travel make him a formidable adversary on par with cosmic-level threats. He might not be able to match Sentry’s raw strength, but his danger level is equally significant.

4. Scarlet Witch

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

In “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”, Wanda Maximoff assumed the role of Scarlet Witch, transforming into one of the MCU’s most fearsome antagonists. Armed with the Darkhold, she wreaked havoc on Kamar-Taj, traversed multiple realities, and effortlessly eliminated the Illuminati without showing signs of strain. Her magical abilities, which can manipulate reality itself, make her incredibly difficult to oppose.

Prior to her transformation due to Darkhold, Wanda was recognized as one of the most formidable Avengers, having the ability to outmatch Thanos in “Avengers: Endgame”. Her transition into villainy only amplified her threat level, given she acted solely driven by grief and an unquenchable desire. Despite appearing deceased at the end of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”, her survival is questionable. As a magical adversary, Scarlet Witch holds her ground against Sentry, and some might even argue she outperforms him in adaptability.

3. Hela

Thor: Ragnarok

In the movie “Thor: Ragnarok”, Hela, the Goddess of Death, displayed an almost unstoppable power. With a single hand, she shattered Mjolnir, a moment that left everyone stunned and highlighted her supremacy. As Odin’s firstborn and the initial commander of Asgard’s forces, Hela surpassed Thor in battle prowess and annihilated Asgard’s entire defense force without mercy. Her talent for creating endless weapons on Asgard and her self-regenerative abilities made her appear invincible or immortal.

In a display of unmatched power, not even the almighty Thor could halt her rampage. Eventually, he had to summon Surtur and unleash Ragnarok to demolish Asgard in an attempt to end her dominion. With her formidable combat skills, enchanting magic, and indestructible nature, Hela stands among the most formidable antagonists in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although Sentry might surpass her in terms of sheer destruction, Hela’s control over death itself sets her apart as one of the most terrifying adversaries ever encountered.

2. Sentry (The Void)

Thunderbolts*

In the comic series Thunderbolts, the introduction of Sentry significantly altered the power dynamics within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). With powers far surpassing those typically granted by the super-soldier serum, Robert Reynolds, also known as Sentry, boasts divine strength, speed, and energy control. However, it’s his sinister alter ego, the Void, that makes him a formidable antagonist. The Void materializes from Sentry’s troubled mindscape, appearing as a formidable force capable of reducing beings to mere shadows and wreaking havoc without a hint of regret.

In the comic series titled “Thunderbolts,” a catastrophic event known as the Void almost completely wipes out the team. Unlike typical villains who crave power or control, the Void embodies chaos stemming from internal conflict, making it difficult to foresee or manage its actions. If the Void is fully released, it might equal or surpass the power of cosmic beings.

1. Thanos

Avengers: Infinity War & Avengers: Endgame

As a movie buff, I’d put it this way: Amongst Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) villains, Thanos stands unmatched in power. His blend of raw might, tactical acumen, and deep-rooted beliefs make him a chilling adversary before he even grasps the Infinity Stones. In “Infinity War”, he effortlessly subdues the Hulk in a physical confrontation, and once he gathers all six Infinity Stones, he effectively transforms into an entity with near-omnipotent capabilities.

In the movie “Endgame,” Thanos, with just one thought, reduced half of all life in the universe to nothingness. Even without the Gauntlet, he almost defeated Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America combined. His influence on the Infinity Saga was immense, significantly altering the risks involved in superhero tales. Although the Sentry’s Void could rival him in destruction, Thanos demonstrated a strategic acumen and focus that might have thwarted such a danger before it even manifested. Whether with or without the Stones, Thanos stands as an exceptional example of villainy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, remaining unmatched, even post-Thunderbolt.
