Currently, a major challenge for the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a feeling of disconnect. The first three phases of movies were well-connected and clearly led up to the big battles against Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, leaving few plot points unresolved.
The story has become quite disjointed lately. We’ve seen characters introduced and then disappear, plotlines started but never finished, and hints at future developments that don’t seem to lead anywhere. Despite the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, we’ve only gotten a brief look at Doctor Doom and haven’t seen anything further about him.
While Avengers: Doomsday might resolve some lingering questions from the Marvel Cinematic Universe—even with just a brief mention—there are a few storylines we expect will likely remain unanswered.
Mordo Hunting Sorcerers

A storyline that began with a hint in 2016’s Doctor Strange remains unresolved. The film’s end-credits scene showed Baron Mordo taking the magical energy that allowed a character named Pangborn to walk, and Mordo declared there were too many sorcerers on Earth.
The theory was that Mordo would begin tracking down and eliminating other sorcerers. He stopped practicing magic because he disapproved of Doctor Strange and the Ancient One’s disregard for natural laws, and he believed removing other magic users was the solution. However, this potential storyline hasn’t been explored yet.
Even when Mordo reappeared in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it wasn’t the original Mordo – it was a version from another universe. This probably means we’ll never find out what ultimately happened to the Mordo we first knew. While Wong has appeared in several projects since, there hasn’t even been a brief mention of what became of him.
Pretty Much Everything From Secret Invasion

The Secret Invasion comic books are legendary, but the recent TV show didn’t live up to expectations. Many viewers were disappointed, especially by the twist that James Rhodes had been a Skrull all along.
The show left viewers wondering how long the Skrull had been impersonating James Rhodes. This creates confusion about whether Rhodes or the Skrull appeared in past movies like Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. If the switch only happened recently, before the events of Secret Invasion, it doesn’t really change much about those earlier films.
The series also left several plot points unresolved, and it seems unlikely they’ll be revisited. For example, Nick Fury and Varra’s departure to negotiate with the Kree, and the fact that G’iah is now the most powerful being in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, probably won’t be brought up again, which adds to the show’s overall confusing nature.
Black Knight & Blade Teaming Up

Similar to how Secret Invasion felt largely disconnected, Eternals seems to have faded from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie aimed to introduce a new team of heroes, but it received a lukewarm response from both critics and audiences, and hasn’t been referenced much since its release.
A storyline that doesn’t seem to be developing much is the potential team-up between Black Knight and Blade. At the end of the movie, Dane Whitman discovers the Ebony Blade and receives guidance from Blade, played by Mahershala Ali.
It’s unlikely we’ll see any progress on this project. Production for the movie Blade has been incredibly difficult, and it may never come out. Plus, Kit Harington, who plays Dane, has stated there are currently no future plans for his character.
Hulk Has A Son

While not everyone loved She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, the show knew exactly what it was trying to be: a fun, lighthearted legal comedy that playfully acknowledged it was a TV show. It delivered on that promise, but unfortunately, it seems there aren’t any plans to continue the series.
As a Marvel fan, I think the biggest thing She-Hulk gave us was definitely seeing Charlie Cox back as Daredevil! But honestly, the ending also got me really excited. Seeing Hulk head off to meet his son, Skaar, felt like a huge setup for something new and I can’t wait to see where they take that storyline.
I’m a big fan of Skaar! He actually has a really interesting origin – he was born on Sakaar during the time Hulk was there, between the Ultron and Ragnarok events. He’s a huge deal in the comics, but honestly, I haven’t heard anything about him showing up in the movies yet, even though Hulk seems to be coming back for the next Avengers film. I’m really hoping they introduce him eventually!
Xu Xialing Takes Over The Ten Rings

It’s disappointing that Shang-Chi and the characters from his 2021 movie haven’t been featured much since then, aside from a few appearances in Marvel cartoons. He’s finally coming back for the movie Avengers: Doomsday, but that seems to be the only upcoming project for those characters.
Shang-Chi’s sister, Xu Xialing, was a standout character, and their relationship was complex. Throughout the movie, they move from being enemies to reluctant allies and finally reconnect as siblings. The post-credits scene shows that she’s now in charge of the Ten Rings organization.
Hercules Targets Thor

Many fans were disappointed with the latest Thor movie, Thor: Love and Thunder. After the success of Thor: Ragnarok, expectations were high, but the film didn’t quite find the right balance between drama and comedy.
It’s difficult to see how some plot points will be revisited later. While Thor adopting her might not be fully explained, there’s a chance she could appear in a future Young Avengers project. The biggest unanswered question, though, is what will happen with Hercules.
The scene after the credits showed Zeus sending Hercules to pursue Thor, hinting at a future clash between the two gods. However, there haven’t been any developments on this storyline. Plus, Chris Hemsworth is planning to take a step back from acting, which suggests we may not see another Thor movie to conclude this plotline.
The Jake Lockley Personality

Many Marvel Cinematic Universe projects include connections to each other, even if it’s just a small hint. However, Moon Knight stood out because it didn’t really link to other MCU films or shows, though it did leave one unanswered question that could be explored later.
The main character in Moon Knight has a condition that causes him to have multiple identities, and the story primarily focuses on two of them: Marc Spector and Steven Grant. But, a scene after the credits showed there’s actually a third personality, named Jake Lockley.
The show hinted that Jake Lockley was the most formidable of Marc Spector’s alters, and that he continued to collaborate with the moon god Khonshu even after the other personalities had integrated. This suggested a compelling path for the story, but recent statements from Oscar Isaac imply those plans may have changed.
Arishem’s Arrival On Earth

In addition to featuring a large cast of characters, Eternals properly introduced the Celestials to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, after only brief mentions previously. A key Celestial is Arishem, the one who originally sent the Eternals to Earth.
The Eternals’ true mission – to get Earth ready for a new Celestial being – showed that Arishem wasn’t a benevolent figure. At the movie’s conclusion, he appeared and took Cersei, Phastos, and Kingo, essentially testing whether humanity deserved to be saved.
It’s strange that no one ever talks about the giant celestial Arishem appearing in the sky – a lot of people probably saw it! Also, the fact that the Eternals just vanished should have caused a bigger reaction, but it looks like we won’t be seeing any more stories about them.
Eros Arrives

As we’ve seen, Marvel doesn’t seem eager to continue the story of Eternals, so the scene after the credits likely won’t be followed up on. It showed the remaining Eternals searching for Phastos, Cersei, and Kingo after Arishem took them.
Makkari, Thena, and Druig are surprised by a new arrival: Pip the Troll, making his first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Pip brings with him Eros, portrayed by Harry Styles, who is revealed to be Thanos’s brother and known as Starfox in the comics.
Like the other storylines from Eternals mentioned, there’s been no discussion of continuing this story or these characters, which probably means it won’t happen. This is particularly concerning for Eros, as Thanos’ brother could be a significant character in the future, considering the impact of the Blip.
The Council Of Kangs

Everyone knew Marvel was positioning Kang as the next big bad guy after Thanos. He first appeared in the series Loki, creating a lot of mystery, but his first major movie appearance in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania didn’t quite live up to expectations, as he was defeated by just one of the Avengers.
The scene after the credits showed hundreds of different versions of Kang, with one called Immortus leading them. They were uniting to get revenge for Kang’s death and planning a multiversal war. This was originally intended to be the storyline for the next phase of Marvel movies.
As a big MCU fan, it’s pretty clear the trouble with Jonathan Majors, and the fact that audiences weren’t really connecting with his Kang character, led to a major shift in plans. The next big movie, originally titled The Kang Dynasty, is now going to be called Doomsday, and it looks like Doctor Doom will be the main villain instead. Sadly, that means we probably won’t be seeing much more of Kang in the future, which is a bit disappointing.
