10 Iconic Movie Characters Who Shockingly Die Off-Screen Before the Sequel

The demise of a significant character often signifies a heart-wrenching turn of events within any series, particularly those that have been ongoing. Writing off such a character can be especially challenging since they won’t reappear in future installments, and their passing carries an emotional weight. Many long-standing franchises employ the death of key characters to keep viewers guessing or as a compelling hook for upcoming releases.

Instead, it can be just as heartbreaking not to witness a favorite character’s demise on screen. In certain instances, film franchises opt to kill off significant characters between installments, which may occur off-camera due to actor issues, time jumps, or creative choices. Although this move can serve as a tribute to the character, particularly when an actor passes away, it frequently leaves devoted fans of the character yearning for more closure. Here are ten movie characters who met their end off-screen before the next film in their series began.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

In August 2020, the globe lost Chadwick Boseman, a talented actor who battled colon cancer in private. His captivating charm and skill made him a prominent figure across various roles, yet his most iconic work remains his portrayal of T’Challa, the Black Panther. After his passing, fans speculated about how Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) would address Boseman’s absence. Instead of recasting the role, Marvel opted to retire it. In the opening minutes of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” T’Challa dies off-screen from an unnamed illness.

As a movie enthusiast, I can say that the release of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” felt more like a heartfelt cinematic farewell to Chadwick Boseman’s character, T’Challa. Director Ryan Coogler skillfully guided the characters through their grief in a way that resonated with us, encouraging viewers to mourn Chadwick Boseman along with them.

Shuri, T’Challa’s sister, steps up to carry on the legacy of the Black Panther. The movie concludes by introducing T’Challa’s young son, ensuring the cinematic continuation of the Black Panther saga, while also honoring an artist whose premature departure left us all wanting more.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

In the long-awaited continuation of the cherished ABBA musical movie, “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” the story starts by revealing that Sophie’s mother, Donna, from the initial film, has sadly passed away. The sequel delves into Donna’s past through flashbacks, featuring a younger Donna portrayed by Lily James. While many fans were thrilled about a new “Mamma Mia!” chapter, some viewers expressed dissatisfaction that Donna’s demise was the catalyst for the cast’s reunion.

Although Donna passes away before the movie starts, she unexpectedly reappears in the subsequent film. After Sophie gives birth to her son, there’s a heartfelt conversation between Sophie and Donna’s spirit. Meryl Streep’s character, Donna, is also depicted dancing with the rest of the cast during the closing credits. It’s intriguing that they decided to write off Donna’s character so swiftly in favor of another role for the esteemed actress Streep in the sequel.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Over time, Ahsoka Tano became closely associated with the television aspect of Star Wars. She made her debut in the movie Star Wars: The Clone Wars, serving as a key character in the series, before reappearing in recurring roles in Star Wars: Rebels and The Mandalorian, eventually starring in her own spin-off series. Despite Ahsoka’s significant fan base, Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker reveals that she has passed away by this stage in the saga, without disclosing the circumstances of her death.

In the thrilling showdown against Palpatine in Episode IX, I found myself hearing the spirits of fallen Jedi, including Qui-Gon Jinn, Mace Windu, and Kanan Jarrus. Their encouragement and strength gave me the power to vanquish my wicked grandfather yet again.

Interestingly, Ashley Eckstein’s distinctive Ahsoka voice was among these departed Jedi. Though The Rise of Skywalker happens far after Ahsoka’s time, it leaves a lingering sense of sadness to suggest that this beloved character has perished in the film without any subsequent Star Wars movie or series revealing her fate. We can only imagine how she might have met her end – whether through a heroic battle, old age, or somehow appearing in my vision even though she’s still alive. For a franchise known for being overly explanatory, Star Wars leaves fans pondering about Ahsoka’s fate.

Blade Runner 2049

In Ridley Scott’s movie “Blade Runner,” we encounter the idea of replicants – advanced robots built to perform tasks on off-world colonies. Early in the story, viewers come across Rachael, a replicant who thinks she is human. By the end of the film, Rachael and the main character Rick Deckard have developed romantic feelings for each other as their relationship blossoms.

In the not-so-distant future when Blade Runner 2049 unfolds, it’s unfortunate that Rachael, my beloved character from the original movie, has perished while giving birth to her child with Deckard. Peculiarly, traces of Rachael resurface in the sequel: Niander Wallace, CEO of the Wallace Corporation, has replicated Rachael for interrogation purposes against Deckard, and Agent K uncovers her skeletal remains. Despite 2049 being an impressive continuation of Scott’s masterpiece, it is disappointing to see that much of Rachael’s storyline unfolds behind the scenes, and how a pivotal character from the first film is relegated to a plot device in the second.

The Godfather Part III

Regrettably, supporters of “The Godfather” found themselves in a challenging situation when the studio presented an offer that Robert Duvall, who played Tom Hagen in the initial two films, was unwilling to accept. Desiring payment comparable to the main actor Al Pacino, Duvall’s request was not met by the studio. Consequently, writer Francis Ford Coppola was compelled to remove Tom Hagen from the script due to the studio’s refusal to negotiate on his salary.

In Coppola’s latest draft of “The Godfather Part III,” it is revealed that Tom Hagen passes away off-screen, following the events of Part II. To fill Hagen’s role as legal advisor to the Corleone family, a new character named B.J. Harrison, portrayed by George Hamilton, is introduced. Prior to Duvall’s departure from the project, it was speculated that The Godfather Part III would revolve around a conflict between him and Michael Corleone, making for an intriguing climax to the trilogy.

Transformers: The Last Knight

In a surprising turn of events, Shia LaBeouf, known for his role as Sam Witwicky in the initial three Transformers movies directed by Michael Bay, opted not to reprise his character for the fourth movie. Instead, the subsequent films, Age of Extinction and The Last Knight, featured new human characters. Notably, since LaBoeuf left the Transformers series, Sam Witwicky has not been seen or made a cameo appearance in any sequel.

In the fifth film, “Transformers: The Last Knight,” some insights are given about Sam’s location. During this installment, Sir Edmund Burton, played by Sir Anthony Hopkins, is unveiled as the last living member of the Witwiccans, a clandestine group responsible for protecting the Transformers on Earth. A careful observer can spot from a photograph that Sam was part of the Witwiccans. Given that Burton seems to be the only remaining member of the order, it’s reasonable to conclude that Sam has probably met his end.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

In the movie “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” Mutt Williams, portrayed by Shia LaBeouf, was a debatable aspect. As Indiana Jones’ illegitimate son with Marion Ravenwood, he joined his father on their adventure through South America in the fourth film. Unfortunately, due to the character’s tarnished image, Mutt did not reappear for the eagerly anticipated sixth installment of the series.

Although Mutt doesn’t appear in “Dial of Destiny,” the movie gives him a fitting farewell. Known for his mischievous antics aimed at irritating his father, Mutt tragically lost his life during the Vietnam War. This unfortunate event strained Indy and Marion’s relationship, but they found solace in their shared sorrow in the film’s concluding moments. Interestingly, Mutt’s untimely death off-screen contributed to a stronger connection with fans, as it paved the way for a poignant final chapter in the franchise’s narrative.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

At the start of “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,” the protagonists encounter Saruman in a perilous situation atop Isengard. In this instance, his loyal servant Grima Wormtongue betrays him by stabbing him from behind. Meanwhile, Legolas swiftly dispatches Grima with an arrow, which leads to Saruman plummeting from the tower to his demise. This scene marks a significant antagonist from the first two “Lord of the Rings” films.

First Appearance(Saruman) The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), (Grima) The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)

In the standard version of The Return of the King, viewers missed out on the scenes depicting the deaths of Saruman and Grima because these events are only shown in the Extended Edition. Many film enthusiasts were left curious about the fates of these significant characters after their absence in the main movie cut. Interestingly, in the book, both characters meet their end during the Sacking of the Shire, a part that was removed from Peter Jackson’s adaptation altogether.

X-Men: Days of Future Past

In the film “X-Men: First Class,” a fresh group of X-Men is presented for the prequel series, featuring Professor X, Beast, Havok, and Banshee. While these four characters set the stage for the main team in future installments, the X-Men franchise takes an unexpected turn. “Days of Future Past” leaps about a decade beyond “First Class,” and during this time leap, the original X-Men team from the first prequel has disbanded. By the story’s progression, Professor X is unkempt and powerless, with Beast taking care of him; Havok has enlisted in the U.S. military; and Banshee has met his demise.

CharacterSean Cassidy/Banshee (Caleb Landry Jones)
FranchiseX-Men

It’s unfortunate that Banshee, among other members of Magneto’s Brotherhood of Mutants, seems to have perished during Trask Industries’ Sentinel program experiments. This character was a standout in the comics and had great potential for a compelling live-action X-Men portrayal. The chronological jumps in the X-Men prequels frequently discard characters and themes from earlier films to demonstrate the passage of time, with Banshee suffering the harshest consequences.

Alien 3

In the sequel of “Alien,” titled “Aliens,” there’s a shift as many original cast members meet their end. The movie introduces fresh faces among them, one of whom is young Newt. Interestingly, only four characters – Newt, Hicks, series heroine Ellen Ripley, and android Bishop – make it through the events depicted in “Aliens.” These four are left to continue their journey, escaping in an escape pod at the film’s end.

CharactersRebecca “Newt” Jordan (Carrie Henn), Corporal Dwayne Hicks (Michael Biehn)
FranchiseAlien

Instead of Alien 3 starting with Newt and Hicks’ deaths in the opening credits, the escape pod they were traveling in carried a Facehugger Xenomorph. This led to their untimely demise and the crash of the pod. The abrupt elimination of these beloved characters from the previous film leaves a bitter taste at the beginning of Alien 3, as it contradicts the heartwarming ending of Aliens.
