10 Horror Legacy Sequels That (Almost) Live Up To The Original
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve noticed that legacy sequels have become quite the trend in Tinseltown lately, but it seems the industry has always been one step ahead. Frankly, reboots no longer seem to be what fans are craving for, especially when it comes to our cherished classics. Instead, there’s a growing demand for a return to the original storyline, where the magic of the first installment can continue to unfold.
Despite the common pitfalls of following established patterns in sequels from older horror films, numerous movies within this genre have successfully carved out their unique identities, transcending their initial releases. The popularity of horror movie legacy sequels appears to be at an all-time high today, with the much-anticipated reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer, slated for release in the current year.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre series has intriguingly evolved over time. Following the release of the groundbreaking original, viewers were treated to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2, offering a vibrant, comical, yet equally thrilling interpretation of the plot. Over the years, audiences have been offered various sequels, some standard and others quite eccentric, along with numerous reboots. With the triumphant return of Michael Myers in Halloween (2018), it seems the creators of this franchise are eager to jump on the bandwagon too.
2022 saw the Netflix premiere of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” taking a fresh approach instead of maintaining the terror of the original movie. In this new take, a group of influencers endeavors to breathe life into a forgotten Texas town, inadvertently provoking the aged serial killer Leatherface, who embarks on another gory spree. The film’s focus on Gen-Z culture generated mixed reactions among fans, as it was perceived as diluting what made Leatherface terrifying. Moreover, this reboot failed to reignite interest in the character or franchise. Regrettably, it appears that Leatherface may be absent from future screens for a while.
Psycho II (1983)
It’s surprising to consider that a horror movie could become a successful series, but “Psycho II” demonstrates this is indeed possible. In the sequel, Anthony Perkins reprises his role as Norman Bates, who returns to the rundown and chaotic Bates Motel, his former home. The voices he once heard are back, luring him towards his murderous tendencies once more.
The movie doesn’t aspire to be another “Psycho” per se, but instead, it’s forging its unique narrative inspired by the original film. Remarkably, “Psycho II” carved out an impressive independent identity distinct from Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic masterpiece.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
Although people often laugh their way through the Ghostbusters movies, it’s easy to overlook that these films are also known for their horror elements. Following the conclusion of the original story in 1989 with Ghostbusters 2, and the 2016 remake facing intense and hostile criticism, the Ghostbusters franchise seemed extinct. Yet, in 2021, fans can revisit the series with a new installment, titled Afterlife, directed by Jason Reitman – the son of Ivan Reitman, the original Ghostbusters director.
In the years following the initial Ghostbuster films, Egon Spengler’s family inherits his house after his unexpected demise. Notably, Harold Ramis, who played Egon, had already passed away before this movie was released. Yet, upon settling into their new home, they realize that Egon’s unfinished business still loomed large – the town is plagued by a potent specter from days gone by. Ghostbusters: Afterlife, in many ways, manages to recapture the hilarity and terror of the original installments, breathing new life into the series for generations to come.
Candyman (2021)
As a follower, I’d say it’s hard to overstate just how captivating and chilling the Candyman saga has been for me, although it falls under the horror film genre. Originally, Clive Barker brought the terrifying figure of Candyman to life through Tony Todd as the lead, while Virginia Madsen delved into the urban legend. In the recent reboot, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II took on the role of the investigator immersed in a fresh exploration of the macabre art world.
Nia DaCosta guides the reappearance of the horror classic, ‘Candyman’, in a movie brimming with profound social insights and thrilling narratives. Though it’s challenging for any fresh production to match the brilliance of its predecessor, viewers were captivated by the revival of ‘Candyman’.
Curse of Chucky (2013)
As a movie buff, I must say that the infamous doll, Chucky, originally brought chills down our spines through the gripping terror of the first three “Child’s Play” films. However, with Brad Dourif’s voice still echoing menacingly, the character took a turn towards the absurd in “Bride of Chucky” and “Seed of Chucky”. These later films were more about laughs than scares, which unfortunately alienated fans from the original horror appeal. Thankfully, in 2013, we got a refreshing return to form with the darker, spine-tingling “Curse of Chucky”.
In a fresh twist, the latest installment, “Curse of Chucky,” stars Brad Dourif’s daughter, Fiona Dourif, who has been previously seen on screen. This new film aims to rejuvenate the series by returning it to its original terrifying foundations, while simultaneously expanding upon the established history of the character. By doing so, “Curse of Chucky” skillfully revitalizes the series and sets a new standard for what viewers can anticipate moving forward. This sequel, rooted in legacy, was just what Chucky needed to regain his chilling allure once more.
Final Destination Bloodlines (2025)
The “Final Destination” movie franchise has an engaging structure. The initial movie released in 2000, featuring Devon Sawa, revolves around a group of teenagers who cheated death by having a premonition of a disaster. However, it’s revealed that Death was not satisfied with this outcome, so each teenager met their untimely end in bizarre and gruesome ways. The following films generally followed the same narrative pattern. The first film to break away from the repetitive storyline and introduce fresh elements was the one that introduced unique lore.
The latest installment of this series portrays Iris Campbell’s descendants experiencing eerie visions of her demise, unaware that she had actually thwarted this event years earlier and saved numerous lives. However, much like Death, they make amends by systematically eliminating those destined to perish on that fateful day, ultimately resulting in the extinction of Iris’ family lineage. This movie serves as a captivating revival for the franchise and a poignant homage to…
Scream (2022)
In the realm of ’90s horror, I’d argue that Wes Craven’s groundbreaking work on “Scream” set a new standard by seamlessly blending chilling terror with a dash of humor. This cinematic masterpiece, often hailed as a classic in the genre, was just the beginning. Though subsequent installments may not have reached the same level of adoration, they still captivated audiences.
The franchise, known for its self-awareness, saw “Scream 2” as its sequel, “Scream 3” as the trilogy’s climax, a reboot with the “Scream” MTV series, a reboot-sequel with “Scream 4,” and finally, the 2022 “Scream” as its grand legacy sequel. Each new addition to this enduring saga continues to pay homage to the original while carving out its own niche in horror history.
In the latest “Scream” movie, a fresh group of teenagers, headed by Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, find themselves terrorized by a brand-new version of Ghostface. To maintain the film’s status as a true sequel to the original, they bring back the original cast members: Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers, and David Arquette as Dewey Riley. This new “Scream” became such a hit that it led to another film a few years down the line, and eventually a seventh installment, which unfortunately didn’t fare so well. However, this legacy sequel of “Scream” marked the beginning of a new phase for the franchise.
Halloween (2018)
Thirty years following John Carpenter’s iconic horror film, we have a sequel that disregards all other installments in the series. The infamous figure known as The Shape or pure evil is back, this time returning to his birthplace, Haddonfield, Illinois. His target list includes Jamie Lee Curtis’ character, Laurie Strode. In 2018, Myers makes a comeback after breaking free from prison, once again terrorizing the town of Haddonfield.
Despite numerous follow-ups to the original Halloween movie that came after its initial success, it’s widely agreed that the best is undoubtedly the film titled Halloween (the Legacy Sequel). This movie transported viewers back to all the charm of the original production with a fresh update. The return of Laurie Strode and Michael Myers on screen was a treat, especially alongside some new characters. Subsequent films in this legacy series, namely Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends, unfortunately failed to live up to expectations. Nevertheless, the iconic character of Michael Myers returned with renewed vigor in the Legacy Sequel titled Halloween.
Saw X (2023)
Following the release of the fourth “Saw” movie, the series faced a challenge in identifying a fresh main villain who could match the chilling and entertaining appeal of Jigsaw, portrayed by Tobin Bell. This character has long been a haunting presence within the franchise, contributing significantly to its horror genre success during the early 2000s. Post the eighth “Saw” film, the series made an attempt at change with the poorly received “Jigsaw,” followed by another critical flop, “Spiral: From The Book of Saw.
In 2023, the long-awaited revival of the franchise arrived in the form of “Saw X.” Defying all predictions, director Kevin Greutert delivered a “Saw” film tailored for contemporary audiences that not only outperformed expectations but proved to be a financial success. Unlike previous installments, this new movie presented the story from the perspective of John Kramer. Deceived into thinking his cancer was cured, Kramer exacted revenge on his fraudulent doctors by subjecting them to gruesome traps. The film harkened back to classic “Saw” style while offering a fresh take.
Initially, it was planned for the eleventh movie to premiere this year, but unfortunately, some small disputes arose. Fingers crossed, we’ll get to witness Kramer back in action trapping more victims before long.
Doctor Sleep (2019)
In a remarkable feat, the film Doctor Sleep succeeded in crafting a sequel that matched the terror of the original masterpiece The Shining. Directed by contemporary horror maestro Mike Flanagan, this movie is set approximately four decades after the initial storyline. Ewan McGregor portrays Danny Torrance, who grapples with his psychic abilities (referred to as ‘Shining’) and finds himself drawn back to the Overlook Hotel when a cult emerges, attempting to siphon off other people’s Shine.
Stepping into the realm of fear as a seasoned cinema connoisseur, I must admit that the original horror masterpiece has left an indelible mark on the cinematic landscape. Daring to revisit such hallowed grounds after nearly four decades is nothing short of audacious. The potential pitfalls were numerous if this sequel failed to measure up to its iconic predecessor’s legendary status. Yet, I am thrilled to report that “Doctor Sleep” not only held its own but exceeded the lofty expectations of its discerning audience, delivering a chilling and exhilarating horror experience.
