While the Nintendo Switch 2 is still getting new games, it already boasts a fantastic collection of role-playing games. Owners can enjoy all the games originally released for the first Switch, plus a range of enhanced and brand-new titles designed specifically for the Switch 2.
While many Switch RPGs can also be played on other consoles, newer games like Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave are starting to offer experiences unique to the Switch 2. Hopefully, we’ll see more Switch RPGs receive special upgrades for the new system, similar to the Xenoblade Chronicles games. Even now, there are plenty of compelling reasons to choose the Switch 2 versions of the best RPGs on the platform.
Raidou Remastered: The Mystery Of The Soulless Army
The Shin Megami Tensei series can seem daunting for newcomers, but Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army is a great place to start. It’s a spin-off title, so it doesn’t fully represent the core SMT games. However, with its Personainspired style and action-based battles, it’s likely more accessible than a game like Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne*.
I’ve been playing Raidou Remastered on both the original Switch and the newer one, and honestly, there’s a big difference. The game looks way sharper on the new Switch, and it runs at a smooth 60 frames per second most of the time. You might still see a little bit of slowdown here and there, but it’s a much better experience overall.
Bravely Default: Flying Fairy Remaster

The first Bravely Default game became popular on the 3DS, reminding players of classic RPGs from Square Enix with its unique job system and surprising story. Although Bravely Default 2 came out on the Switch, the original game wasn’t available again until the release of the Switch 2.
While not a showcase of the 3DS’s full power, Bravely Default: Flying Fairy Remaster holds a special place as a launch title for the system, and the gameplay itself remains excellent. With a few added enhancements, this Switch release is the best way for new and returning players to experience Bravely Default.
Rune Factory: Guardians Of Azuma
The Rune Factory series always combines farming simulation with role-playing combat, but Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma feels different. It features a Japan-inspired world and a vibrant anime art style similar to Genshin Impact, which is a big change from the more traditional Western fantasy look of past games.
Good news for Switch 2 players: Guardians of Azuma has received very positive reviews, and most people seem to appreciate its fresh approach. While there are other farming games available on the Switch 2, Guardians of Azuma is a much more satisfying RPG experience than many of them.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A
The Pokémon series hasn’t had a major success lately, and the mixed reactions to Pokémon Legends: Z-A show that trend continues. Despite this, Pokémon is always a key part of the conversation when discussing RPGs on Nintendo consoles, and this new game looks particularly impressive thanks to its presentation on the Switch 2.
Playing Pokémon Legends: Z-A on the original Switch reveals familiar issues with the series’ Switch games – specifically, noticeable compromises in graphics and how smoothly it runs, which makes you wonder how well Game Freak is optimizing their games. However, on the newer Switch 2 console, the game looks and plays much better, letting you fully enjoy exploring Lumiose City and battling Pokémon.
Persona 3 Reload
Surprisingly, the Switch 2 offers two different ways to experience Persona 3. You can choose Persona 3 Portable, a simple remaster available for just $19.99. Or, if you’re looking for a fully updated version, Persona 3 Reload is a complete remake that utilizes the Switch 2’s capabilities, but it costs $59.99.
Many fans suggest getting Reload, as it not only improves the graphics but also adds helpful features. Either way, you’ll be able to enjoy this classic RPG on the go, making it easier to fit into a busy life.
The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim Anniversary Edition
Playing Skyrim on the Nintendo Switch was convenient, but the graphics weren’t as good as those on newer consoles and PCs. The release of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim Anniversary Edition on the Switch 2 improves the visuals, though the upgrade wasn’t entirely without issues.
When the Switch 2 version of Skyrim first came out, players noticed a frustrating delay between their actions and what happened on screen, making the game less enjoyable. Fortunately, updates have fixed this problem, and now the Switch 2 version is a great way to experience this hugely popular role-playing game.
Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time
Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time offers a laid-back RPG experience, immersing players in a charming world that blends adventure with life simulation. Building on the success of the original Fantasy Life on 3DS, this new installment features plenty of enjoyable activities, including fishing, cooking, and combat.
While the original Fantasy Life was limited in where you could play it, Fantasy Life i is available on most gaming systems, and the Switch 2 is likely the ideal choice. Its relaxed gameplay style is perfect for playing on the go, and a dedicated Switch 2 version or update would significantly improve the experience compared to the original Switch.
Trails In The Sky 1st Chapter
Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter is a reimagining of the classic RPG, now brought to life with full 3D graphics. The version for the new Switch 2 console is a significant improvement over the original Switch release, offering smoother gameplay at 60 frames per second and more detailed visuals.
Plus, upgrading to the new version is very affordable. If you already own the game on the original Switch, it only costs one dollar to get the version for the Switch 2. While not completely free, it’s a fantastic deal.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade
Square Enix has consistently shown it believes in the Switch 2, and that commitment has resulted in the release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade on the console. This version of the Midgar section of FF7 is a large-scale, high-quality game, and the Switch 2 port is remarkably well-done, representing one of the most impressive technical feats seen on the system so far.
It’s currently unknown if Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will come to the Switch 2, so you might have to wait a while to find out. However, hints suggest it’s a possibility, meaning Switch 2 owners likely won’t miss out on continuing Cloud’s adventure.
Cyberpunk 2077
Even though Cyberpunk 2077 first came out in 2020, the version for the Switch 2 really shows off what the system can do graphically. The detailed world of Night City was too demanding for the older PS4 and Xbox One consoles, and the original Switch couldn’t handle it at all. But with the Switch 2’s increased power and clever optimization, it now runs the game surprisingly well.
Despite a rocky start five years ago, Cyberpunk 2077 is now much better received, thanks to updates and new content that fixed many of the initial problems. While it’s not the most complex RPG, it’s a stunning and captivating experience, especially as a look into a cyberpunk world on the Switch 2, and is difficult to match.
